I think Jason is right... the overall skill level of NBA players is much more advanced than even the best WR/RB in the NFL. It's not about athleticism, or stamina, we know NFL guys have loads of that, it's being able to dribble and shoot at an NBA level.

Jason is 100% right. If an NFL player was good enough to play in the NBA, they would. There's more money, fewer long-term health risks and far superior career longevity. I also don't think Travis understands how big NBA guys are compared to basketball players. Derrick Henry would look small compared to the shooting guards and small forwards in the league. Both Randy Moss and Cris Carter had opportunities to to play basketball in college in pursuit of an NBA career and both admitted that they ultimately chose football because they realized it was much easier to make an NFL roster. Folks just don’t understand how good NBA players really are. Remember, Basketball is a sport that you can play all day and all year from the time you can tie your own laces. So the amount of reps you can get to develop your skills and dexterity is far greater than in football which is just a seasonal sport. So a football player who hasn’t been committed fully to plying basketball since being a youth, has almost zero chance to just switch and catch up to those who have.

I don't think the best NBA athletes are necessarily better than the best NFL athletes. If anything, in terms of raw athleticism, the NFL guys have to be at least as good. They are obviously stronger, but the best NFL guys also outjump and outsprint almost anyone in the NBA. The bigger issue is that NBA skills are so specific. Look at it this way: the least athletic guys in the NFL are generally kickers, punters, and traditional pocket passing QBs. But their skills are so specialized that you can't trade athleticism for skills for those positions. In the NBA, unless the dude is 7-foot, you won't tolerate a freak athlete if he can't shoot, dribble, pass, etc. In short, the more specialized the required skill set is, the more you're willing to accept modest athleticism. Luka Doncic and Kevin Durant don't wow you at a combine, they wow you with their basketball-specific skills.

There are some WRs who I think have the right body type who if they were able to develop sufficient enough ball-handling they could come off the bench in the NBA. Many WRs actually played basketball in college too. Look at Drake London on the Falcons who is 6'4" with over a 40" vertical who played basketball. If he really committed to improving his basketball skills, he could play in the NBA.

No shot. If he committed in his youth, sure. But you won't just learn to have good enough handles to be able to play in the NBA. Hell, look at Jalen Brown, who is considered an elite NBA player. His handles are more than solid, but got completely exposed in the Playoffs, because every other player on that level has ELITE handles. That's the big difference between American football and basketball. Basketball is a lot more skill-based in terms of small motoric skills. A WR is probably the most suited for the NBA in terms of physical abilities, but not skill-wise. WR's jobs are running routes and catching a ball. A basketball player could more easily learn to do the job of a WR than otherwise.

NFL: Power, Speed, Explosion, Agility, Technique: needed in most players depending on position you take some up or you take some down. NBA: Agility, Speed, Extreme hand eye coordination, Spatial Awareness, Stamina, Explosion, Technique on Dfense and offense required of EVERY player. American fball is certainly the more physically demanding but basketball takes far more in specific skillsets required for all players to have.

Several things make it more difficult to be in the NBA then the NFL; 1st is that their are only 435 spots on NBA rosters vs 2208 spots on NFL rosters/practice squad and this number grows when adding on the large amount of players that go on IR and the fact that training camp rosters are 90 so plenty of chances year. Also football has such a wide variety of skill sets when comparing positions position, you could have very minimal athleticism but be brilliant and great at throwing and play QB. In basketball you need to be at least average at each skill; shooting, dribbling, passing, awareness, side to side quickness, etc. the only exception is if you are a force of nature like Shaq. Randy moss is arguably the greatest athlete in NFL history and he gave up on basketball pretty early because he saw the path to the NBA was going to be very difficult whereas he destroyed everybody on the field.

It's a little unfair to compare salaries and positions though. Because an 8th man in the NBA still means that you're among the Top 240 players in the entire league. Also, basketball players need to play both offense and defense. So you need to be both athletic AND skilled at various aspects of the game. However, in the NFL, you only need to be among the Top 1000 or so players, and you want to be more of a specialist at a particular position, than being athletic. Same with baseball, or even hockey. The skills involved are more specialized, so teams will sometimes take a less 'athletic' person, in order to get the 'fatter' guy who can throw a 95mph slider or balance themselves on skates.

This is a good debate but Jason is correct. A college basketball player who is not good enough to play in the NBA has a much better chance of making it to the NFL even if they don’t have much football playing experience. Gates Gonzalez are a couple names that come to mind. Another guy DeMar Dotson former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Tackle 6’9” he played college basketball but wasn’t very good he knew he had no shot in the NBA. He tried out for the football team played some backup Defensive Tackle again wasn’t very good at that. Yet he got a chance to try out for the Buccaneers after being on the practice squad he eventually became a starting Right Tackle for them and had a good career. I saw someone mentioned Moe Allie Cox as a potential guy who might have made it to the NBA he would most likely be an end of the bench type player. I could have seen a Julius Peppers potentially make it at 6’7” be a bit of an undersized PF though in the modern day he would have a better chance. Former 49ers DL Arik Armstead who is 6’7” tried to play basketball for the Oregon Ducks but quit after not getting the playing time he wanted. He obviously would be too small to play C at the NBA level but lacks the ability to be a combo PF/SF.

Sheer power, Quickness, Speed, Vertical, Cardio, Hand-eye coordination and most important thing is, how fast/good you can be at some kind of physical activities(or sports). I bet NFL guys(Especially RB, WR, CB) are at least as quick as NBA PGs and SGs. But the thing is, height matters. If two people have same physical abilities in all other categories, taller one has more value in most sports. Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson are four(or four of top 10 at least) physical freaks in NFL history. But I think Russell Westbrook, John Wall, Allen Iverson, Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose's possibilities of being successful in NFL(WR or CB)or Lebron(TE) is higher than those four being successful in NBA. I mean think about Russell Westbrook playing WR and Jrue Holiday playing CB. And to play in NBA requires much more skills than to play in NFL period.

Now NBA players would probably not be great NFL players either, they don't have the sheer muscle to take the constant contact week after week. But the average height in the NFL is 6-7, which means a bunch of dudes the height of the largest O linemen are moving like receivers. They also have way more endurance, as they run way more way more often since the NFL is built on strength and burst of speed. Just completely different athletes in the NFL vs the NBA, and both should be highly respected. In my opinion though, LeBron James could have been one of the best tight ends in the league, especially in Miami form.

But in the NBA, they'd be considered undersized shooting guards. Guys like LeBron and Zion would intentionally seek out AJ Green to post him up. And if they aren't making close to 40% of their 3s, you wouldn't even be able to put them on the floor. Steph Curry is taller than Davante Adams... But I'll also say this: not that many NBA players could play in the NFL. You could say Zion, but Zion can't even stay healthy in the NBA. No way he makes it through an NFL game without getting hurt.

The problem is, unless you’re like 6 foot 10 you have to be unbelievably skilled at shooting and passing in order to make the NBA. And even if you are tall, you have to be incredibly coordinated and skilled to make it. You could watch these guys and shoot around, I remember watching one Allen Iverson practice and he casually drained basically everything he threw up for like an hour, and he barely shot 40% most of the time in games. The world has tons of 6’10” guys selling insurance and working construction jobs. There is no casual amount of work or elite athleticism that is going to translate to being an NBA player under 6’8” without an extraordinary skill complement. Ben Wallace is an example- as one of the shorter “low skill” NBA players, he was still 6’9”. In today’s NBA, the only chance that an NFL player would really have to not get exposed on every play would basically be to play center, and none of them are tall or long enough. Fully guaranteed contracts, no hits, no concussions, more recognition because you aren’t wearing a helmet all the time… It’s not even close choosing between being a veteran in the NBA versus a veteran in the NFL, the NBA is better in nearly all cases outside of a handful of incredible NFL players.
