There's a line I encountered on tumblr in reaction to this, which was "Bolo of Aeor is the single greatest piece of improv-er on improv-er violence I've ever seen." I'm inclined to agree.

Even in a throw away JOKE Brennan sneaks in details about Aeor "It would be illegal to ask these questions" and of course Bolo wouldn't see the "bag" as a machine since Aeor has their own sentient metal citizens - Aeormatons. BLM has mentioned loving/watching Critical Role, specifically loving the Final CR2 arc. His love really shows

I didn't know about Aeormatons when I first met "Bolo from Aeor" in Calamity. Now that I know more, her distaste for simple automaton servants seems less like "dumb mail-order bride" and more like "I've learned to expect far better than this, but a language barrier is keeping me from fully articulating my frustration." Well played, Brennan Lee Mulligan. 🙂 This bit has layers that make it work as both a superficial joke and commentary about cultural differences (while still being a good gag, in a totally different way). 🤯

Yes! I'm a year late but YES BLM totally nailed that Aeor vibe without being over the top. They were a high-tech civilisation, a hodmadod is the equivalent of a vacuum cleaner. It was a nice subtle way to point out the idea that Aeor was far advanced or at least used more advance robots for menial tasks.

Let us not forget: THIS IS EXANDRIAN CANON LORE. Meaning all Aeorians talk like this, aka MATT has to talk like this.😂 Brennan just straight up said “not only am I going to ruin your world as history, I’m going to ruin your world in perpetuity.” I mean not really, but it’s nuggets like this that make life worth living.

The pause and delivery of "can you...destroy?" takes me out every single time.

The coolest thing is, you can see that Brennan didn't have to create her at all. Sam was ready to just say the name and move on, but as soon as she introduced herself he also jumped in immediately. The improv chemistry of the two is amazing, we need more.

My headcanon is that Bolo looks exactly like Dr. Lugash in a tasteful black cocktail dress, high heels, tasteful jewelry, and fancy party makeup. Russian mob tattoos. Broad shoulders. "Stranglin' hands". Everything.

This is a small thing in comparison, with all the amazing stuff happening, but does anyone else think that Bolos confusion in dealing with the atomaton is that she is from Aeor and therefore used to actually sentient aeormatons? Hence why she calls it a bag, as it is made of cloth and in her eyes not even close to a real atomaton. Also I can't help but think, that Brennan already had planed for there to be a Aeorian spy in the city and then changed it to be Bolo, when Sam came up with the character, or that he came up with idea of there being a Aeorian spy, and that spy being Bolo when he came up with the idea of her being from Aeor. I guess what I am saying is that I think Bolo is a Aeorian spy.. ;)

I dont think there's going to be a spy in the city, let alone it being Bolo. Remember is Aeor that's the city that's going to be attacked for the sole purpose of a dry run for an actual attack elsewhere.

Now that you mention it.... It is almost like he saw a perfect opportunity to have them interact with an Aeor citizen for exposition plot drop without actually making it a story focus.... It's the perfect opportunity to explore Aeor stuff without sidetracking the actual story. Using known-to-be inconsequential NPC's for background info is a useful tool in its own right, and it would make sense for a citizen of Aeor to think that a humanoid shaped sack of cloth without sentience is effectively a walking bag.

Listen, I use this phrase "This bag keep arguing with me" at work all the time now and NOBODY knows what the hell I'm talking about, but it makes me cackle every time.

The number one rule of Improve is to Yes And whatever someone brings into a skit.... A generally good 2nd rule is basically 'don't let a bit lose its energy'. So long as the 'humor' of the scene is not lost or especially if those 'in the spotlight' are not able to find a way to continue the bit. 0:43 is a great showing of this second rule.

Having only ever seen this out of context, I just kinda assumed Bolo was, like, a frail little goblin man. I see now that I was very, _very_ wrong.

I just watched this earlier today, and aside from the Colbert one-shots, this was my first experience with Critical Role, or really anything D&D outside of Dimension 20. This moment was made me feel right at home, and it’s made all the better by the fact that the one losing it is a famous voice actor. Can’t wait for more. I might even go right into the sequel campaign after this one ends.

It's so much fun because "bolo" mean " cake" in Brazil. LOL
