Travels with a Curator: Santa Maria della Scala, Siena

In this week’s episode of “Travels with a Curator,” Xavier F. Salomon, Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator, journeys to Siena to explore Santa Maria della Scala, an eleventh-century complex across from the steps of the cathedral. Behind the modest exterior of this hospital turned museum are a variety of magnificent frescoes and sculptures by Lorenzo di Pietro, better known as Vecchietta. The Frick’s “Resurrection” is the only signed and dated work by the artist in the United States.

Thank you, Xavier Solomon, for the pleasure you have brought me over the past bleak months by enhancing my virtual visits to the Frick Collection and now Siena. You help to revive memories of visits to both places, as well as hopes to see them again in real time.

Another wonderful video, thank you so much Dr Salomon for sharing your knowledge and pictures I find it all so inspirational. I did not know about Veccietta but he is now on my radar. As a Doctor was thinking what it must have been to walk those corridors heading to the operating room or some such and have those wonderful ceilings and frescoes surrounding me. WOW

So encouraging to think of all the many artists I've never even HEARD of, such as Vecchietta, that are waiting for me to discover, with the help of the Frick and experts like Xavier. Thank you!

Wonderful. I have yet to visit Siena and have to admit this is an artist I had never heard of before this talk. Thank you for all these videos - they have been one of the unexpected bonuses of lock down.

I am a tremendous fan of The Frick and these talks. I have learned to better hear names of artists discussed by reading previous comments first, where clever people have provided the spelling, useful for further research. August trip across the continent to NYC has had to be cancelled, but we are coming to The Frick at the first opportunity. We will be so well prepared to understand!

I did Italian language course in Siena more than 20 years ago, since then visit there regularly.....it's just gorgeous city and has lots of treasures, intriguing stories, Palio and famous Caffe Nanini. MI manca tantissimo!!!

The best "wander around" city I've ever had the pleasure to visit. I find it difficult to wrap my head around the effort involved in maintaining the buildings, let alone all the precious objects they contain.

Couldn't the cicada represent rebirth? Most of the varieties come back each year, and they molt. I wonder how the scholar arguing against a resurrection interpretation dealt with this symbolism. I will have to look it up! Thnx for a great talk!!
