Travelling with Muscular Dystrophy // what I learnt from 3 weeks in South East Asia

I recently went to South East Asia on a family holiday. As someone with muscular dystrophy, it's not as simple for me to travel. In this video I go over some tips, tricks and things that I would recommend to anyone with a disability who is thinking about going somewhere. Travel is really fun and super rewarding, but can require some proper planning. I hope you enjoy the video and I'd love to hear any travel tips you have!
Thanks for watching!

My name is Kalvin and I'm an Australian guy in his mid-20s with a condition called FSHD. It is a form of muscular dystrophy which affects various parts of my body, limiting my mobility. I was diagnosed as a 14-year old and have only recently accepted it as part of my life.
I will be documenting my journey living with a progressive disability, whatever that may entail. Expect to see a whole lot of disability-related advice, updates on how I'm dealing with things, activities I pursue and a whole lot more.
My goal with this channel is to hopefully inspire people with disabilities to go out there and give things a crack. I aim to spread some awareness about muscular dystrophy and build a community of people to ensure that no one feels like they're fighting this on their own.
Stay strong ♥

    What's your best travel tip?

Two tips I think could be helpful for any future travel and others: 1. Print out your travel insurance. Often you won't be treated beyond the immediate lifesaving stuff/basics until you can prove you have insurance. If you don't have your phone or it's out of battery, this can be bad. When my dad and I had horrific food poisoning, my dad slipped on vomit and cut open his leg before being taken to hospital. They wouldn't treat him (besides basic bandages) until he pushed through his sickness and called his travel insurance company (it was through work) to confirm it would be covered. I wasn't with him as I was suffering in the hotel. This was Thailand. The last thing you want when sick/injured/dealing with a preexisting condition that needs treatment, is to be calling your travel insurance. 2. Compression socks for long flights. When sitting for a long time you reduce blood flow to your legs. This can be quite uncomfortable as well as increase the risk of blood clots. Everyone can benefit from them in this case but it's especially poignant if you have something like Restless Legs Syndrome or limited mobility.

Wow those are some really great tips, thanks for sharing! You're definitely right, being organised with insurance is super important. That sounds like one hell of a story and I hope you and your Dad are doing well. My mum was really loving the compression socks too, I'll have to grab some for next time. Thanks for the comment! :)

Very good video. My advice (for myself especially) would be to slow down and rather see less. I did South Asia 40 days and it was too much travelling with zero relaxation. ✈️ 💆‍♂️

Thanks Marcela! That's a great point, I think we do tend to try and cram as much in as possible, thinking we're not making the most of our time away. Taking a few days to chill out and relax is definitely something I plan to do more on my next adventure. I appreciate the comment :)
