Traveling in My Habit

It's time for vacation, which means a journey to the airport. While most religious would go "incognito," I always take the opportunity to evangelize in my habit.

    I am an athiest, however, I find your faith inspiring. You might just make me re examine my opinion of religion. In any case, it seems like you are doing good work and your heart is in the right place. Carry on good sir.

    Take it easy now, don’t go from one extreme to the other. The middle ground is best. Believe in Him and remember He’s real without falling for that fearmongering controlling religious nonsense. Only believe the good parts, that He created us all and all the rest and knows, loves, understands, accepts us all and therefore doesn’t judge or punish or anything like that, and isn’t against ANYONE, human or otherwise.

Some are cloistered who never leave the Monastery, some are teachers int he colleges their have founded, some are assigned to different tasks and live outside the monetary, etc.... I pray this has enlightened your concept of why some Benedictines live outside and travel. Also Oblates do not wear benedictine habits. Pax!

    A habit is a kind of silent witness. Just seeing it reminds us that, ''Life is more than food, the body more than clothes.'' It also captures the attention of young people who might be looking to do something out of the ordinary with their lives. An invitation almost, to, ''Come and see.''

    I think it's nice to see the religious in public wearing the habit. I wish some of the nuns would go back to the simple modified habit as well.. Habits should be worn where ever with pride. never feel awkward or ridiculous. the religious habit is a beautiful garment to wear and should draw a certain amount of welcome attention . which is a testimony of who you are and what you stand for.. ..

    This is so true, when I am wearing my habit, people ask me to pray for them, they ask to see me, they ask me what do I do, they share there pain around the paedophyllia stuff in the Roman Catholic Priesthood, they ask me to baptize them, they ask to be volunteers within our community, they give me gifts to share with people, they love to chat. It is such a blessing to wear my habit as I wonder around this world. Just love it, love you. Blessings. BFM

    I am retired from the U. S. Navy. When I used to travel, either on official orders or leisure, I would always travel in uniform for many of the same reasons you choose to travel in your habit. When I was in the Navy you didn't see as many military personnel traveling in uniform as you do today. I used to enjoy meeting new people and engaging them in conversations that never would have taken place had I traveled in civilian clothes.

    Definitely a lot of connections between our two lives. I'm curious about that, though, as I imagine some would get very tired of constantly hearing "Thank you for your service." I'm sure it's edifying, but does that ever get annoying? The reason I ask is because one of the reasons many religious don't wear their habits is because they don't want preferential treatment or to create distance between themselves and others. Wearing military clothing certainly does both of those, so I'm wondering if some have the same internal dilemma.

  • @kennethhuber3658

    @kennethhuber3658

    That was a very thought provoking question. Some of my retired military friends, and veterans have talked about this more than a few times. I have been retired from the Navy for over 20 years, so when I would wear my uniform off base or when traveling it was not as common to hear "thank you for your service" as it is today. However I am now the Commander of the Southwest Ohio VFW Memorial Team, we provide military honors, (prayers, flower ceremony, 3 rifle volley, sounding of TAPS, folding and presenting the flag to the next of kin) at over 130 funerals a year. So I am in uniform a lot now. Does it get annoying to be told "thank you for your service? I would not use the annoying, sometimes I find it somewhat embarrassing. I was not a hero when I was on active duty. Actually I had an amazing time in the Navy! I traveled the world and saw and did things I never would have dreamed I'd get to do. Honestly sometimes even today I have to pinch myself to know that it had all been real. Other than marry my wife, joining the Navy and staying in until i retired was the best thing i ever did. I just feel like I really don't need to be thanked. I served my family and I could live in a free country. That is really thanks enough. Of course when someone thanks me, I smile and tell them they are welcome, and thank them for their support.

    I am an AF vet who makes a point to thank other vets, young or old. The main reason I do that is because I remember what happened to returning VietNam vets. I also remember NOT traveling in my uniform in order to avoid conflicts with weirdos looking for opportunities to publicly virtue signal. Serving is a sacrifice, albeit a smaller one, but public awareness of the sacrifice is huge.

    I love seeing monks/nuns/etc in public because it helps to merge religion and everyday life where often they are kept quite separate. Also it helps to show that the clergy are just normal people and that being a monk/nun is not as 'extreme' and separate as it might sound.

    Your adventures are nice to watch. Speaking of which, I was taken aback by the word evangelize. I held my judgement and heard you out. You changed that word for me. I am a chaplain and became one to honor the worth and dignity of all faiths. I feel that is what you do. And yes it was great to see your parents. Thank you for being on KZread.

    I never go to airports, but the one time I went in 2016 I saw 4 Franciscan monks in habit. If I saw them that one time, I’m sure there are more. Always nice to see them showing their faith proudly.

    I wear a 4" Benedict Crucifix in public, many of my Catholic friends ask me why, I say because I we are all called to witness. Many times I am approached as you are Father, what a wonderful chance to listen & maybe help. Yeh, I get odd looks, but that is exactly what I want anyone to notice Jesus Crucified. You are one of my special priests in the US I pray for daily God Bless you Father & your inspiring work. I am a subscriber
