I think one of the things that is so awesome about Maya is that, yes she can be super fun and silly (love it), but when it's time to put the gloves on and discuss animals, conservation, and taking action, she doesn't play around. That shift in tone is super impactful when you are already invested in Maya and you have been following the story of Alveus. Stellar video here!

THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!! As a maine resident and who cares deeply for our aquatic wildlife this is amazing. For some reason people in maine just don’t care about this problem at all. The last time we tried to help the right whales there was huge outrage from our lobster fishermen. It’s really sad to see such a beautiful animal go extinct right in front of our eyes. I hope this video really gets out their and really shows people this problem.

You have to think about it from the fisherman’s perspective as well. I think conservation is definitely important, but not a the cost of someone’s livelihood. There should be some middle ground.

@@rosyreverie Conservation will force industries to stop existing due to no longer being needed or permissible for ecological reasons. The real solution would be that having a job or not shouldn't determine your QoL. Conservation is an existential issue for humanity, its not something that can be ignored because it disrupts people's lives. We will have to get used to massively reducing our consumption of resources to only include what is necessary for a high quality of life and also minimize our land use so that ecosystem can be restored. Industries will have to be dismantled or alternatively all industrial activity would need to be planned out and carefully supervised to maximize productivity while minimizing ecological impact.

I think a big part of it is a human failure to understand total cost of ownership, or having too short of a time horizon on personal wants or needs. In a Texas metro area, I get a lot of anti-environmental pushback from people who think this stuff doesn't affect them, that their current quality of life can be sustained in a vacuum. TLDR I leverage a tailored regional portfolio of big red buttons to push, appealing to common surface complaints or concerns based on motivated self-interest, touching on personal identity, saving money, and misguided xenophobia. I use beef and pork as an example. Texans are irrationally attached to barbecue, steaks, and meat in general as part of their pseudo-national identity. This takes on cartoonishly exaggerated proportions with urban and suburban Texans who I think are trying to fake it till they make it, b/c many of them have never even participated in 4-H stuff for learning to work with livestock. "You like steak, right? BBQ ribs? Do you want your beef to get even more expensive than it is now?" And from there, if they're willing to engage, then I can tie in how something like half of all wild-caught fish, or 90% of bycatch, goes into animal feedstock for protein. If this goes away partly or wholly, human industry will have to make up the deficit in order to continue sustaining the same rate of meat production -- and everyone knows those dirty corporations will never do anything for cheap. This leads into more general issues with intensive artificial substitutes. Often I get offhand rebuttals like "If all the bees, trees, or fish die or we run out of fresh water, we'll just use technology to make up the deficiency." My response to that is, "How much more expensive do you want your daily life to be?" due to the technologically, resource, and labor intensive nature of any artificial human replacement for diminished or lost natural ecosystem functionality. Or maybe (and I'm being extremely facetious here) Americans should hire more migrant brown people to hand-pollinate crops at low wages no red-blooded American would be willing to do half the work for. Either do your part to sustain the relatively low cost functions of the natural environment, or else prepare for those dirty brown people to come steal your virgin daughters and the dirty jobs you won't do anyway. This argument rarely comes out, usually only when I'm supremely fed up with someone and I'm just looking for a punching bag rather than actual discourse. :P Hopefully you are a nicer person than me, and you'll be able to identify your own regionally appropriate topics of motivated self-interest for those lobster fishermen or otherwise.

Anyone in the LA area interested in whales should check out Point Vicente in the spring. There's lots of whale sightings and there are volunteers there who count them. They also have a museum :)
