A passport note: I definitely do not look cool, but once I start my journeys, I wear a neck pouch and keep my passport safe in it. In one airport I pass through, I have to show my passport four more times after checking in. I also keep all my boarding passes in the pouch. And if I have any, I keep a few dollars in the local money inside for the first taxi. I would add here, that major airport hubs require a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes, or at least shoes that don't hurt. You could easily be walking ten minutes !

TOTALLY AGREE - passport, boarding passes and enough cash to buy coffee or whatever without digging around in purse or personal item. I may look geeky, but I don't hold up the line fumbling around and I keep the most important things the closest.

I’m a former Lufthansa reservation agent and we always have to dress business appropriate when we fly, so no leggings or sweatshirts for me. I usually wear comfortable, no zipper, straight leg black pants, a white long sleeve t shirt and a knit blazer and comfortable slip on shoes. Works for me. Thanks for all your informative videos.

One of my fav hacks is to carry a large reusable grocery sack that folds down small. When going through security I put all the things that need to be taken off into the grocery bag (sweater, jackets, scarf) so it’s all contained and separated from those grimy bins. Once through security you take the bag over to wherever is convenient and reset. Reusable bag goes back in your personal bag and you run less of a risk of leaving anything. Works especially well when traveling with multiple people as it’s only 1 bag to keep up with.

Bouncing broom closet 😂😂😂. I’ve never heard a better description of an airplane restroom! Many years ago, my toddler spilled my Snappy Tom juice in my lap. There I was 32,000 feet in the air, 6 feet tall, having to take my jeans off in that bouncing broom closet and trying to wash just the crotch of said jeans. Never ever again would I get another drink on a plane with tomato juice 😮!

My neighbour is a pilot and he has told us many of time to flush with one foot in the lid to avoid unwelcome showers. One thing I always do especially for European travel is pack my oldest shoes that still look good and I wear them out. I always have a start of a hole when my weeks are done and then I just toss them behind and there is my room for gifts and treats. And no blisters because they were already broke in.

I switched my shoe laces for elastic laces (easily found on Amazon) so my tennis shoes slip on and off easily. Years and years ago I wore a long dress on a flight, tucked the back into my underpants in the “bouncing broom closet” and gave a few rows of passengers a free show before I noticed. I just laughed, oh well! 😂💕💕 Love your videos!

I sometimes teach overseas in unusual places. My trips are almost always over 20 hours long and sometimes almost 30. I would never wear jeans. I now wear llbean navy, double knit pants -- not pretty but after 10 or 15 hours I don't care. I wear a good t shirt and well fitted cotton sweater. I do carry a long scarf though I am very careful with it. It works for heat, a rolled up neck pillow, and for modesty at my destinations. If I am not wearing socks, I have good quality footlets so I don't have to go barefooted through security.

I used to work with a friend at the Ren Fair and we sold cloaks and capes. People used to buy cloaks from us that were too long for them, saying that they would just hold them up. I did the same thing when I inherited a cloak from an old boyfriend who was moving out of the country and was downsizing. After a few years, I finally gave up and had it shortened for me. We started advising people to have them shortened and would do alterations out of sight of the patrons, just so that they wouldn't drag our beautiful cloaks through the dirt and leaves on the ground. Thirty years later, I still have that cloak and it still looks good because I don't drag it through the dirt.

I always love your videos Laurie, always such practical tips for regular people. I always fly carry on only, and I dress and pack my personal item as if they will make me check my carry on case and then lose it. So I choose my flight outfit not just for comfort, but also to give options for several outfits when combined with what I have in my personal item bag. Generally my heaviest and nicest slacks on the plane (comfy elastic waist casual dressy knit pants), with a somewhat dressy tank shell, a t-shirt, a long sleeve blouse, a sweater, and my Scottevest vest which has enough pockets to serve as essentially another free carry on. Plus a jacket on colder months. And always a scarf for the plane. Once I am seated, I can take off anything that is too hot, wrap it in the oversized scarf, and use it as a pillow. I bring mix and match items in a compression cube in my personal item bag, and that gives me several different outfit choices even if my other clothes get lost by the airline.

for the men, I bought a pair of black golf pants a few years back, and they are great for airport wear. they're made to wear with or without a belt, they fit well, don't feel too light, and are comfortable for the flight. for everybody: remember that the runway at the airport is for the planes, not for fashion shows. nobody you care about will be judging you for selecting your outfit for comfort and utility instead of for fashion. addendum: in fact, if I see you in the airport wearing clothes that will make your trip miserable in the name of fashion, I'm gonna judge you for THAT. but not in a mean way, of course.

I have pants in 3 colors from Lands End that are made from recycled plastic and don't wrinkle. They have a cotton knit waistband and zippered pockets. Lint and cat fur do not stick to them and they always look neat. They work in winter or summer and are easy to wash/dry. I wear a tank, button-down shirt and sometimes with a cashmere pullover in winter. I always wear a cardigan, and in winter I have a lightweight packable longer packable jacket from Lands End. In summer, I wear a lightweight cashmere scarf/shawl and in winter, I pack a heavier shawl which doubles as a blanket. I also take with me HotHands Warming Insoles which I insert in my shoes at the start of an international flight (after boarding) which keep my feet warm for 8 hours.

Laurie I have been watching your channel for some time now and I love it! You have such great ideas and suggestions. My husband and I love to travel and I now feel that I am pretty good at it in regards as to what to wear NOT to wear and how to pack. We just had a 3 week vacation in Cuba and I had a great outfit to wear on the plane from cold to the warmer climate as well as mixed and matched items to wear while there. I suggest to my travelling friends to watch your channel for ideas. Can`t wait for the next trip.

The black striped backpack is Great! Unless you’re one of those “just in case” packers like me. I used the all black version on a return trip from Puerto Rico and it barely fit under the seat in front of me because of all the extra stuff in it. And I ended up not using half the stuff that I packed as “just in case” items. Great advice! A lot to think about regarding outfits the next time I travel.

Unlike most people, I don’t get cold on a plane, I get really warm. I also travel between different climates. What I wear now is a ‘nicer’ black lounge outfit. It’s not as thick as a sweatsuit and also looks less casual. In a warm climate, I have a tank underneath and pop the top in my carry on/personal item. Also I include both a packable down vest and packable down coat. These really take up very little space and I can chose how much warmth I need. Just last week I travelled from Costa Rica (28C) to Canada (-15C) and I was completely comfortable in both climates and the various airports and planes on the trip. I appreciate your videos and have found your tips very helpful. 😊

Laurie, you're so right about getting quality items that fit well. I'd rather have one piece of cashmere than 10 of any other wool. Something I like for travel days is a travel vest with loads of pockets. I don't have to empty the pockets like pant pockets. I just take it off and put it in a gray bin. I like Saf-T-Pockets reversible styles because spills happen. Thanks for all your tips!

I have a dark purple carry on from Ricardo with matching checking bag that I love but when I travel in the winter I want to find a hard case set. Having all purple bags helps me find them easier and they don’t get confused when traveling with friends. 😃

Good reminders about dragging clothing around on soiled surfaces when in transit. Sleek, simple, and able to add a layer is best. Coordinated pieces for various destinations make is easier to pack and enjoy a stay. Could you maybe remind folks that footwear during transit time is important? Thongs, fragile sandals, high heels and tiny slip-ons will hinder one's ability to move and scramble in an emergency. We do not need to wear combat boots, but I often see next-to-nothing footwear on airplanes. There is always the chance that an emergency means running down a concourse, over the run-way, boarding trams, etc.!! Thanks for all these videos; clear skies for all! peace

I love wearing my shawl... I have no issues with it, keeps me warm if im cold and if I dont want to wear it, I usually fold it and sit on it.. I cant fly without my shawl.. some things I just dont want to change. I prepare before I sit for my seatbelt, I prepare my shawl.. these steps are put into place before I even sit.. depending what seat im in, how far is the toilet, emergency exits, so many thoughts in a short time is helpful to prepare then it only takes seconds.. I am allowed at least 60 seconds to put my carry on up in the compartment, get my seat ready and im done.. I wear knee high boots, I wear jewels, belts, hat.. im going the way I want to dress because its the beginning of my holiday.. yeah I usually wear comfortable clothes anyway, just not what you mention.. the alarm goes off, I get checked out, I dont mind this part neither, its nice chatting to airport staff.. but your tips are very good. im not complaining, im just sharing because thats what I do.. be yourself and if you wear funky, you will be fine.. I hate flying so it helps calm me to wear what I want and feel comfortable.. being in a work uniform 50 weeks of the year, my holidays, I love dress ups because I dont get a chance otherwise.. 🤷‍♀

One flight was so hot, I bought a foldable fan just in case for next time. The connecting flight was freezing. I used my foldable puffer coat as a blanket but put it on backwards so not to bother my seat mates. FYI! I have long curly hair and one time had the TSA agent look through my hair. I have had a pat down because of my underwire bra too. Both were out of state flights. My parents also stated that going out of country; that some of their customs checks ended with all their clothes removed from them suitcases and thrown everywhere.

Knowing i was getting straight off the plane, going to a club meeting & dinner. I decided to wear the skirt & top i was wearing out to dinner at my destination. It’s a beautiful skirt. Dark blue background with a vaguely hawaiian-ish floral print. Wrap, ruffles, about 10 miles of fabric and sooo floaty! 🥰 I must have spent half the flight trying to keep it off the innocent bystanders in the seats either side of me and the other half trying to stop it sliding off my thighs and exposing my hoo-ha. OMG! Thank god it was only a 2hr flight. My long suffering row companions must have been so glad to see the end of me. Heck, I was glad to see the end of myself! Hindsight! I love your travel tips! My 'hotel shoes' are lightweight ballet-type slippers. They go in a pocket of my personal bag. First thing I do, after arriving inside the terminal, before even _thinking_ of going to security is to find a seat, take off my shoes, pull on a pair of foot sox (disposable liner socks for trying on shoes) and put on those slippers. Bag the shoes and place in my personal bag. Get in line - pop the slippers in the grey bin, collect my stuff on the other side, take off the footies and put my slippers back on. *After* I get out of the security area, I can put my regular shoes back on at my lesiure, toss the foot sox, and go on my way.

Thanks Laurie! Great tips! Another aspect of the oversized clothing I don’t believe occurs to people is the seats are so tiny, if you’re in oversized clothing, you could easily be taking up more than your share of space. Like you Laurie, us smaller women always tend to get seated by someone larger than us. Seems I end up sharing my tiny area with whomever is seated next to me. If they’re in large clothing, it just makes it even harder.

Another tip: move things you need access to during your flight, from your pant pockets, into your shirt pockets (gum; ear plugs, cell phone, eyeglasses, etc.) because the disappearing leg-room restricts access for your hands to reach into your pant pockets, especially in the dreaded middle seat.
