Maybe that's his ultimate strategy to counter hagglers. Richard took the bait!

It had nothing to do with haggling. The guys pet hamster died.

Laker Lefty I was thinking the same thing...and man, if so, it’s brilliant.
"Is this the most anyone has ever paid you for this amount of tea?" "Yes." "Invest the money in stocks" Richard Ayoade is such a gem
So, Richard got two boxes quoted at 20 each, two teas at 25 each, which would have been 90 AED in total. Then Richard 'haggles' that _up_ to 100 for the whole lot, throws in an extra 50 and then another 100. Richard sure knows how to haggle.

Lol. The funny thing is he probably could've got the lot for 50

This was because Richard could tell that guy was not in a good place mentally. Either that or is just camera shy and felt bad for putting him on the spot.

Maybe he took the generosity of a Brit as an insult. Plus, I heard his hamster died.
That first shop guy really looked down though. Glad Richard has such a big heart.

It wasn’t about the haggle. His pet hamster died.
"...it lacks the ratings, and the razzmatazz". LOL! He is such a sweetheart!
I can do 800 euro.... I'VE NEVER BEEN SO EXCITED IN MY LIFE!! 900 EURO ON A FRIGGIN RUG!!! I love that he forgot he just made a deal for cheaper literally 5 seconds earlier lmao
7:00 has to be the funniest “okay” ever. My man pulled a face
That first cashier must have had a really bad day, and it must have got even worse when they appeared.

Richard buying the tea at 1:38 is so me when I try and barter! I end up paying them more then they tell me originally, just cause they look sad!

I wonder if that's a tactic the shop keeper uses... Pull a sad face so you don't haggle. The last sad face he pulled looked so puppy dog eyed it was unsettling. Then again. The man might not even make enough and haggle ruins him. We just don't know.

He lived in a country where it is acceptable to cut a man's hand off for stealing, beheading for being in a homosexual relationship. I mean, hopefully that's enough to get his wife a passport or visa to get the heck out of there.

What are you afraid of?
Man, that tea salesman had "hustler" written all over him.
Key to haggling: always, always, always walk away from the shop before you buy anything. If they let you leave without making you a better offer then you know that you were near their best price. If that price is acceptable to you then you just go back in after a couple of minutes. It's not like they're going to refuse to sell it to you. Even better is if you can go in with a local, because they'll know if you're getting ripped off.

It is something I learned the hard way. We made an offer to a British company, they said "No" and that was it. No haggling, no nothing. We were crushed.

Yeah, either something is offered at a price I'm willing to pay or I don't buy it from that person. I'm going to a shop because it's more convenient than making the item myself, don't ruin that by making my shopping experience less convenient.

As a Dutchie I should be good at haggling or trying to get quality things at a lower price. But I just cringe watching this. I hate haggling. I guess we Dutch like the act of it but not when people do it us...

If I were a conman (I'm not), I would start it at 1500 euro, although my cost is .. say 100 euros. Notice how he immediately stuck his hand out at 800 euros to close the deal? Probably because 800% margin is good enough
