I've been into the hobby a bit less than 2 years. I have about 20 pens I use for all kinds of writing and also drawing. My most expensive pen so far cost $80. I'm all in on plastic pen bodies and high quality screw on caps. I also love light pens and pens with large ink capacity. I saw Schoen's ultum at the DC pen show. Amazing! I will buy this pen BEFORE I buy my first pen with a gold nib. This pen checks all my boxes and is so gorgeous, elegant nd wonderfully engineered. I would buy this pen over a Lamy 2000 (another pen people laud for its engineering) every time.

Very good review. I have been interested with these pens. For a while. Schon pens is located close to where I live and have met the owner a few times at pen shows. He does his own work and yes, they are very much a very engineered pen. I just have to bite the bullet and get one of his models. He started with aluminum models that are fabulous. Have tested them and they tend to be a bit thin for my taste, but the quality is spot on.

I love eye dropper pens for their ink capacity, but unless there is a valve that shunts the flow, I always get burping because of my generally warm hands. Really do dig the thin body section because of the particular polymer of interest though. It was incredibly satisfying to see proper O-ring gland design! 😁👍

regarding O-rings and body fillers, I much prefer the way PenBBS is doing it, where the o-ring has its own groove BEFORE the threads and not after them, that way you seal the body AND leave the threads dry.

The chemicals/plastics compatibility table is really useful, but what are the relevant plastics for most pens? I guess most fountain pens are acetal? I think Lamy Safaris are ABS. I also have cellulose acetate pens (Pilot and Pelikan), which I guess are also acetal? I also certainly have polycarbonate. We need a pen brand vs material table.

But I don't travel with pens, I don't take pens outside of my home for work or any other reason, so I just don't need an indestructible pen, I don't even really need a pocket pen (although I have had an aluminum Pocket 6 for 3 years now). I have succumbed to Ultem fountain pen fad myself but the more I think about it, the more pointless it seems. Fountain pen is wrong application for Ultem. All the benefits of Ultem, high thermal and chemical resistance are irrelevant for a fountain pen, so you are left only with disadvantages like brittleness. So for a fountain pen, ABS plastic is far superior material to Ultem. Unless you are using your pen in high temperature hot steam environment. Then Ultem pen May be handy.
