Well Done! This is the first time I have seen someone actually show how to use the trash bag I’ve been carrying around for years! I always thought I would use it like a sleeping bag, or cut holes in it to wear like a poncho. Good demonstration!

That's one way of doing it. You're Right on having the Largest Garbage Bag with you. Let's say you don't have cordage. This Is My Method Keep the bag intact put something in the front of the bag to hold Open (Rocks)at the bottom and then take a stick the length of the bag lifting the bag upward until you to find height of the Y branch position then plant the Y into Ground. Go through the bag & Rest on the Y. Put a stone in each corner to Open Pup Tent. Front Y should be also positioned at the same time as back. This way tent has Walls Back and Floor. No Contact to Ground. Another method is to find flexible branches that you can insert into the inside of the bag at the back in the middle and the front this way you will eliminate the Y branches. Either way you can use the bag over and over and over and over this way. USMC

I appreciate that you say the actual temperature. Seventy degrees during the day, and about 28 degrees at night. That helps me to orientate to the situation. I now live in north central Washington state. I have a bit of camping experience, and that information helps me relate to the situation. Thank you.

I don't know how I missed this video. I've been thru your list several times.... Excellent video. I keep heavier trash bags in my BOBs. Imagine how much more you can do with 2 of them. Or a group carrying 2 each. The possibilities are endless. With all the branches and foliage you can make your camp invisible completely. If the doodie actually hit I wouldn't want to damage my bags any more than I had to so I would use those heavy duty paper clips from Office Depot and your toggle idea. I love your creativity. Keep the genius coming.

I was trapped out in the woods with just a poncho and trees were falling all around due to the wind. I had no chance of going anywhere after I lost my flashlight between some big rocks. Always have a extra flashlight and some wool clothing. I was able to keep reasonably warm even though I was soaked.

Was out this week up here in Canada. I used a poly 10x10 drop sheet with pennies and larks head loops for grommets. Wish i had some marbles. Anyway it was -20 c with the windchill. I had a small fire just under the plow point and was surprised how warm it was under there. First time i ever tried the plowpoint. Great set up only three stakes. Easy to swing around if the wind changes. Great video my friend really enjoying your channel. Going to throw some trash bags in my kit. Take care.

A 3 mil 55 gallon bag starts out at 37 x 56. Open it up and you get 4144 sq in, either 74 x 56 or 112 x 37. The 74 x 56 is just over 92 inches on the diagonal. Raise it up 3 feet on one end, and covered length along the ground is just over 7 ft. If you have two bags (say one opaque and one clear or orange) then you can almost double the area again (if you leave some overlap.) That doesn't get 8 x 8. That's why I've gone to 65 gallon 3 mil bags that start at 50 x 48. Open it up and you get 4800 sq in at 50 x 96 or 100 x 48. The diagonal for 50 x 96 is just over 108 inches. Raise it up 3 feet on one end, and the covered length along the ground is just over 8 feet. It's 15% more area than the 55 g plus critical length to cover without having to curl up. At 4.2' x 8', double it up with overlap and you get the 8 x 8. At this point, I'm considering going up to 95 gallon 3 mil bags at 61 x 68 ... that's almost a raincoat. Open it up and you get 8296 sq in at 122 x 68 or 136 x 61 ... compared to a 55 g it's 100% more area. One bag is more than enough, but the rule is two is one and one is none, and carry gorilla tape.

@@VJLasorsa Here's one source I have used: 65 gallon, black: www.amazon.com/PlasticMill-Gallon-Garbage-Liners-Contractor/dp/B018RVXVS6 also clear: www.amazon.com/PlasticMill-Gallon-Garbage-Liners-Contractor/dp/B073RN1DQ9 There's other sources on Amazon and so far I haven't had any problems with those 65 g products, just looking at quantity vs price at this point (and availability). I like to carry at least one opaque (black, green or brown) and one clear or orange in the kit. Other bags I'm considering for an upgrade, haven't evaluated yet: 75 gallon, black: www.amazon.com/PlasticMill-Gallon-Garbage-Liners-Contractor/dp/B07BF5MK2N 95 gallon, black: www.amazon.com/PlasticMill-Gallon-Garbage-Liners-Contractor/dp/B01LWL92DP One thing to keep in mind is that the wind load increases quite a bit with the increased area. That's one reason why I'm considering the 5 mil vs the 3 mil. It's not a big deal because gorilla tape can reinforce for my needs where necessary. The bigger bags get bulkier and that's another consideration. Haven't found one yet that's comparable in bulk and weight to a commercial tarp though. My one big factor is that the bag must be unscented (outside of normal plastic bag smell) since I consider improvised game bag as an alternate use for the product.

Great video I carry a survival bivvy for these scenarios but I also carry three trash bags. Stuffed with leaves makes a mattress or side insulation. A tarp is too heavy for a day hike. The only time I used my trash bags in my edc was one Summer when it poured down after nights. Got a lot of strange looks from the traffic but kept me dry. In the Summer using trash bags as a poncho you have to put loads of holes in the sides of it or you walk around in a very effective sauna!

Then you can put short strings with loops there, and your emergency-shelter is much more wind-strong. It would not be sure, that when you need it, the weather sends some rain-drops only. At mid way through the vid . . . . you said soemthign . . . but . . . I don't think that losing a piece of cord in the brush "Makes a bad situation worse." It just returns things back to being bad. Cutting your hand does make things worse. There is a difference. The difference is that at baseline, you have your hand. At baseline, the cordage makes things better. Losing cordage in the bush only returns things back to baseline, which is just bad. Cordage improves the bad situation, but losing the cord didn't make the original bad situation worse. Your hand on the other hand is somehting you have at baseline and cutting yoruself does make a bad situation worse.

@@SurvivalTheory My personal opinions on emergency shelters are that: 1) They shouldn't require lots of cordage 2) not require two cords of wood 3) actually go up rapidly in case of emergency. Anything else is just camping gear. My emergency day pack actually has a small dome tent strapped to the outside. My hard hat in an actual disaster deployment has two contractor bags and 50' of paracord tucked inside the helmet suspension in case I am caught away from my backpack. The whole purpose of shelter in an emergency is to maintain thermostability, necessary long before food and water.

@@SurvivalTheory Ended up getting a black USGI poncho. Rains quite a bit here all year round so its a good investment. Black looks more normal as a poncho and it looses less in camouflage as a tarp (through silhouette etc.) compared to other colors, based on my calculations. Optional modular camo mesh layer or use debris. I like these MacGyver attitude videos. This video sparked my interested in camping again. With some _small_ investments and know-how you can upgrade your kit to relatively luxury. Thanks again.
