Trash Picked Aiwa PX-E855 Turntable

Ғылым және технология

A coworker found a 90s "plastic grade" Aiwa turntable in the trash and passed it on to me. It looks as if its in really good condition. I couldn't resist taking a look and inspecting it inside and out. Does it work?
The 7-inch record I'm briefly playing is by my friends Flimmern: www.flimmern.net
The music in the end is a version of Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt suite (I don't know anything about classical music, so I stand to be corrected here).

This was the first turntable I bought when I decided to get into vinyl about 20 years ago. The base model is still around - at least, the case design is - in the form of the Audio Technica LP60: www.whathifi.com/audio-technica/lp60-usb/review For £100 for the USB-equipped version you still can't go far wrong with this as an introductory turntable.

It does not have the same dials as other better record players.

Ah, I didn’t do any additional work on this Aiwa, it worked fine and I gave it to a friend (who I think is still using it to this day). You may be able to find a service manual for your particular one on vinylengine or a similar site. Instructions for setting up anti skate should be in there, if the turntable has a setting for it at all (some of the basic models are just set up from factory and you can’t change the settings manually afterwards unfortunately). Hope that helps!

I have one of these turntables myself. I recently after nearly 30 years had to bring down the speed of the 33rpm for similar reason as yourself, now working like new. Not bad for a turntable from the 90s. One thing though, I think the slipmat should be the other way round on the smooth side.

  • @JanBeta

Usually the screws have little adjustable resistors that control the speed for the 33 and 45 rpm settings, yes. It depends on your turntable which way you have to turn them. You can try to find a manual for your specific turntable or just use a trial and error approach. :)
