Trash or Treasure: '05 GSX-R750 Seized Wheel Bearings

Спорт

In a previous episode many of you spotted the front wheel bearing was seized when Dave's greasy fingers led him to believe otherwise. So we bought some tools and put Mr. Moss to work swapping out the bearings.

    Too funny. I was just about to say that wheel bearings are like changing tires. I can do it with two paddles in two minutes, or four paddles in four years. I didn't change, the tire didn't change, maybe Thursdays are just bad.

    10°c that's high summer here ! Shows that even professionals don't always get it to work first time, but that a little bit of patience works. I use the old bearings to drift in the new ones, you can use a Rawlbolt which also expands to remove bearings, or a slide hammer. I use the wheel spindle to help with spacer centralisation. As for where to purchase bearings, check the internet for a local bearing factors, higher quality for less price usually.

    Maybe you could use the loose front axle as a locating pin for the inner spacer. Have it come in from the bottom and align both bearings and the spacer. Since the wheel is on blocks, the axle might peek up without touching the socket you are driving the bearing with.

    be careful while popping the bearings out when (for example) the inner tube is stuck. The bearings could get damaged by hammering them out. They are not made to withstand lateral knocks like these. So when putting everything together really make sure that thing is centered.

    I have never used ceramic bearings on any motorcycle that I have owned. As the video shows, if you have the right tools and process, there's a lot you can do yourself. OEM or ceramics are put in the same way. Bearings can last 5-10 years depending on use and temperatures, and depending on you regreasing bearings if you want to extend the life expectancy. Most are changes at 40,000 miles or 60,000kms

    @@catalystreactionsbw Ideally an industrial oven (not the kitchen type). However, I kept one out of the two Suzuki RGV-250’s that I raced in the 90’s in the Australian 250 production series (which has produced basically all of our World Champions! Gardner, Doohan, Corsa and the other Troy being Bayliss just to name only 4 (out of many more). I actually spent about two years racing against Bayliss and he, apart from being a great bloke, was destined to become something greater than I could reach! Anyway, back to the oven! RGV’s (as you know) are extremely rare these days! Heaps around from 88-98 in both AUS and NZ, now not! So, I’ve recently started working on the one I kept (it hasn’t been even started in over 20 years. I just couldn’t get the bearings out and remembered the old trick. Luckily enough, our kitchen oven is very wide so I decided to put the wheels (one at a time) in it. Let’s just say the job was a success, even if I’m still sleeping in the “guest” room...

    Do not hit both bearings until they hit bottom. One of the recess is deeper than the other and if you hit on both sides you will damage the bearings because the spacer will put pressure on the inner races and disalign them. You need a tool to fit the second bearing correctly (easy to make) check the service manual to see exactly what I am talking about.

  • @catalystreactionsbw

    @catalystreactionsbw

    3 жыл бұрын

    I always bottom the first bearing to the recess. Then the second bearing goes in until it stops moving based on contact with the spacer. That is how I was taught and as always, there are many ways to do one task.

    it's just the difference in temperature that allows for the clearance for the bearing to come out/in. (a cold day should actually help) hot=big, cold=small. that's why the bearing goes in the fridge. so DO NOT heat the bearing (15:29) also if you take a long time to heat it up for disassembly, the bearing will warm up to the same temperature as the housing and you are back to the same clearance when you started. so going to that uber high temperature that boils grease isn't necessary if you do it quickly. use axel to align everything when putting in the second bering.
