Great tip for trapping little work big results. A add on here in the east blow down trees bring there root balls up from ground giving dry dirt underneath, and always that abandoned farm building although may be too dry.

That’s a great idea! I don’t get to many blow down trees out west, but it’s not from the lack of wind lol. Great tip though!

Thanks Jeromy , great tip . I know we have both had trouble with wax dirt , I have been going back and looking at sets that have not had a trap in them for 2 weeks , but I used wax dirt and the coyotes still wont step into the dirt , they dig off the edge of the hole. A retired govt. trapper told me to also use ant hill dirt , take the top off the hill , remove part of the dirt , and replace the top to protect the hill, then you can come back next year and harvest more dirt,I plan on trying that this fall. Congratulations on going over the 1 K mark , well deserved.

I agree with you Mike. I’m catching coyotes, and I mean like 30 coyotes, at my sets that have dry dirt. They are next to sets with waxed dirt. Still not a single coyote will come near the waxed dirt. I have tried the ant hill material, and it does freeze. I’ve had several people tell me about it, but all of it I’ve used does still freeze without antifreeze. I’ve caught a dozen coyotes the last couple of days with dry dirt, and antifreeze… In the area I’m in there is an ant hill every 20 yards or so, so it does make a very natural looking set. I’m very interested in the waxed dirt, but I can’t argue with results. I appreciate you sharing your information with me!

@@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 Thanks for letting me know that on the ant hill dirt. Are you using table salt , or calcium chloride ?

  • @jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790

I use mixing salt. It is used for livestock. I get it at the local feed store, and it comes in 50lb bags for $9.99. I also use it for tanning. Works great. The coyotes around here don’t mind it at all.

I use stock Duke #2 offset square jaw. I also like the Montgomery #3 dogless, but they are a little bit more expensive than the Duke. I don’t have anything against the more expensive 550&650, but I’m a working trapper, and don’t want to afford 10 dozen at $200-$245 per dozen, hahaha. On my trapline I try to use the exact same trap every set so that I can be consistent. I do use different traps once I’ve ran out of the Dukes, but more of a last resort. I do have 2 dozen Bridger #2 dogless, offset, square jaw. I did modify the pan on those because I was having coyote tracks all over the pan with no catches. There is quite a bit of pan travel on the Bridgers, so I eliminated that by filing down the night latch just a bit, and switched to pan covers instead of underalls. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the peat moss, but I have limited experience with it. Sounds like you’ve got it figured out, and I’m glad you shared what is working for you! I’ll let Jack know he’s doing a good job too! He set his own fence snare the other day while I was setting a trap nearby. I have no doubt he will catch a coyote in it. Thanks for the question, and comment.

Hahahaha. When I said waterproof, I meant freeze proof, as long as it stays dry LOL. I’m pretty scatter brained sometimes, and the wrong thing comes out of my mouth. I probably need a teleprompter like another public speaker I know that can’t get his thoughts out of his mouth. Hahahah. Thanks for the comment!
