@@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 ive had very good luck with clint Locklear's predator bait called gator bait. Its a mild smelling bait good for early season when not so cold. As name hints its made from alligator meat. Here in Illinois we have to release caught bobcat's, and when i use gator bait it seems like cats really like it so i have to keep letting bobcats go out of my coyote set's. But it's one of my great go to baits for coyotes.

When I started trapping many years ago coyotes were mostly gunned with getters wrapped with hide soaked in liver blood. I was an instant star with Powder River and an egg bait which I mixed up myself. I don't trap much in Colorado anymore but I really enjoy making a set with different commercial baits and lures at dirt holes without traps and note the response. It is an eye opening experience. You've mentioned "Plenty Coyotes" in the past. Now I haven't had much response here with coyotes digging out the hole. It could be a seasonal thing or something along that order. Plenty Coyotes holds up well at a set for extended time periods. Grey fox will work the set but I don't get the hot response from coyotes. Other lures used have been from O'Gorman, Caven, Carmen, Funke, Fox Hollow, etc., and I have tried them all . It is fascinating. Some work extremely well, some not so good. Each lure maker has something that works. Trapping in the Peoples Republic of Colorado is very limited. Coyotes don't run across sets made with commercial lures much thus aren't as spooky about working a set.

@@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 Yes I make my own bait. Nothing fancy. The trapper that taught me said to take a 5 gallon bucket 2/3 full of meat cut to the size of your fist. Snap the lit on it, and put it in the ground/ hole with lit light bulb and cover it with plywood and dirt for a week. The intent is to taint the meat. He worked for the government and would use it up quickly. 3 years ago I worked up 2 hams off a fresh put down horse. I soured it in summer and then set it with sodium benzoate. I keep it in 5 gallon bucket with those screw top lids so the flies cant get in. I will need to find another horse next summer because i'm about out. I like a big dirt hole and a lot of bait.

That’s a great question. It depends on how wary your coyotes are. If you trap coyotes that are used to people being in the area you can use a more bait/lure than if you trap coyotes that never see people. A lot of the coyotes I trap are with no lure at all. If I used a loud smell, they won’t come within 30’ of the set. On these coyotes I use fox, or coyote urine only, or a very tiny amount of lure. All in all, less is more around here. They have a great nose, and can find your set without alot of overpowering smell.

Early season: Kellens Red Label with a shot of urine on the backing. Mid Dec. to early Jan: Predator Bait Plus, especially if cats are in the area with urine. Mid January to the end of season: gland lure (sometimes) and a healthy dose of coyote urine.

for coyotes , the bait of choice is simply mice . he grinds up whole mice and puts it in a bait jar from clint locklear and mouse oil . or a bait i make using roadkill rabbit and mouse oil . for beaver it is clint locklear's enrager , halseth's enrager , dobbins backbreaker , and my own that i make from an old jim bridger formula and trapper j's beaver castor lure .. raccoons it is cat food and monster grizz from clint locklear , the berry scent in that drives them nuts . for bobcat it has been scrap deer meat and beaver meat for bait , with beaver castor and silver vine as a rub lure . i haven't used much urine from the trap supply houses . i got some bad stuff that smelled like pure amonia and did not work all that good . you have plenty of coyotes to harvest fresh urine from . your season has been a lot of fun to follow along GREAT JOB .

I like to keep it simple Jeromy I make all my own baits I'll give ya the bases and a couple ingredients added early season bait is aged underground deer liver with whitetail deer tarsal gland added and RED FOX urine, my early season urine change up is mink urine, now late season I trap 40-50 skunks every year for essence and fur I take skunk chunk it grind it and then take empty skunk pods and grind and add them age under ground a year or two then I have a few more goodies added in and COYOTE urine in my opinion one can't over emphasize on how valuable good quality urine is there's my 2 cents works for me, later in season lots scent related sets gland and urine suttle

Yes sir. I do boil them in about a half gallon of water, and about 2 spooonfuls of baking soda. I will say though, if I don’t rinse them off, or set them right away, the baking soda caused them to deteriorate really fats and weaken them. I do have a Trapping Tip that shows how I do it. I’ll get you the link to that video.

Hello Jeromy, I like the concept of blitz trapping. However, here in Wyoming the ground is so frozen my blitz would be 5 sets and a case of dynamite. I have put in a lot of snares. We are down to about one more week of the coyotes bein good so it’s gettin close to the end for us.

Boy Dale I’m jealous. I would love to trap/live in Wyoming! We got a huge warm spell, and the ground has thawed, and dried up. There was dust on my coyotes caught in the trap today. We’re in a 8 year severe drought so there wasn’t much moisture in the ground to freeze. It didn’t take long to dry it out either. When I started running this blitz line I was using my ax to cut out a bed in the frozen ground, and now it’s dusty. Thanks for the comment!
