    This is great! A couple of suggestions: 1. You can bend the acrylic sheets to get them closer to each other. That would probably increase the viewing angle a little bit. 2. Add reflective paint/foil to the edges to get more light. 3. Add film/dark acrylic to the front to hide panels that are not lit up.

    I’ve watched a lot of youtube maker videos over the years, and very rarely do you find one that goes into as much detail as this but still feel balanced. This video shows the inner workings of each part of the problem solving process but doesn’t go on for too long. Perfectly explained and very educational in my opinion. Cool project! I’ll give it a go. Thank you.

    That was amazing. If you need to etch more in the future, you may want to put a "lip" or raised edge on the 3D printed masks. Then the acrylic could sit inside it, locked in place. Less chance of shifting while etching. You could also get a cheap sand blasting tool and use TPU for the mask. That would probably be the fastest way to etch without a laser. I've been wanting to create something with neopixels, but feel like a lot of the "programing" and electronics stuff is not something I really understand. This video is making me want to go for it. Thank you for sharing this with us!

    Thank you! There is a "lip," but maybe not be very visible. Sandblasting would be cheaper but much messier. I will probably buy the laser in the (near) future anyway. That´s the last thing that´s remaining in my workshop. Good luck with your project!

    I also plan to get a custom PCB with those tiny neopixels, that should hopefully make the spacing smaller for a better appearance. I´m still undecided about whether to buy a CO2 laser or a small CNC...

    I think you could improve the display angle by reducing the distance between the panes. You might even get away with using the same LED matrix by having multiple panes on top of the same row of LEDs and cutting notches or painting sections of the bottom so only a specific set of LEDs light up each pane

  • @upir_upir

    6:38 Keep in mind that when you try to detect the current gear with the IMU on the gearshifter, you will not only measure the tilt of the gearshifter, but also the tilt of the whole car, in addition to any forced generated by driving. To cancel this out, you could mount a second IMU to the car, and calculate the difference, but at that point, your hall effect sensors might me simpler. And a lot more accurate. 😅

    I wonder if all segments could be engraved in a single piece of acrylic and lit up by bouncing laser diode light in a specific way. Central segment could be a little bit challenging but outside ones should be doable.

  • @upir_upir

    @upir_upir

    Probably not. You would need to physically separate those parts, otherwise, it will be hard to only light up one segment. But separating the parts should be possible, just not without proper tools..
