As a part of India/UK Season of Culture, a vibrant panel of writers, poets, translators and podcasters come together to discuss the multiple layers of words and language, meaning and interpretation and the sources of their inspirations.
Juri Baruah:- born at Dinjan, located in Upper Assam in 1990. Currently she is pursuing PhD from TISS, Guwahati campus, and working as an Assistant Professor of Geography in DCB Girls’ College. She published two short story collections. Her stories are translated to English, Hindi and Bengali.
Garfield Dsouza is a writer, editor, teacher, and podcaster. His work has been published in Visual Verse and harana poetry. His poems are in Language is a Queer Thing, an anthology by British Council, The Queer Muslim Project, and Verve Poetry Press. He has designed blended e-learning courses for The Tata Group, Capgemini, and Lionbridge; and written technical documentation for IBM and Rolta. He has also conducted writing workshops at Larsen and Toubro and Tata Lit. Live 2022 and completed a season of About What You Say, a podcast about words.
Sanah Ahsan is an award-winning poet, liberation psychologist and educator. Their work includes delivering a TED Talk, writing for The Guardian, and presenting a Channel 4 documentary. Ahsan is working on a non-fiction book about liberation psychology and embracing madness. Their debut poetry collection is forthcoming with Bloomsbury in 2024/25.
Deepa Bhasthi is a writer and translator working in Kannada and English. Her essays, columns and journalism on the politics of culture have been published widely in national and international publications. Her translation of Kota Shivarama Karanth's novel The Same Village, The Same Tree was published in 2022. Her translation of the short stories of Kodagina Gouramma, one of the earliest feminist writers in Kannada in the 20th century, is set to be published in January 2023 by Yoda Press. She is currently working on translating the works of Banu Mushtaq, for which she is the recipient of a PEN Presents grant from EnglishPEN
Preti Taneja's second book Aftermath won the Gordon Burn Prize 2022 for literature that is 'forward thinking and fearless in its ambition and execution, often playing with style, pushing boundaries, crossing genres or challenging readers' expectations.' It was a New Statesman and a New Yorker Book of the Year. Taneja is co-chair of English PEN’s Translation Advisory Group and professor of World Literature and Creative Writing at Newcastle University, UK.
