Transition Relay - First Impressions!

I had the opportunity to demo the Transition Relay (PNW) at Galbraith mountain! This was my first time at Galbraith, first time riding an eMTB and first time riding a Transition. What an incredible experience it was. I felt the PNW vibes all around: muddy, foggy, rainy, misty, mossy, and ever so magical. Truly a great day.
In this video I talk about my first impressions: what I liked about the bike, what concerns I had (or what I learned from the experience), and I ask the question, would I buy this bike? It's important to emphasize that this is my first time on an eMTB so I am not comparing it to other bikes nor is this a review by a professional (lol I'm just out here sharing my love for bikes).
I hope you enjoyed hearing my thoughts and I appreciate you coming along my journey as I figure out what eMTB, if any, would best suit me :)

I have the XX AXS (non pnw). The bike is very capable. I would buy it again. Yes, 12.5k is a lot but not far off the top end of other premium brands like Yeti or SC. I like the weight. I can ride with the bike off for many smaller climbs and dh. Pedals great. I find it quiet (especially compared to my prior Repeater and the yeti...EP8 too loud and a deal killer for me). The range obviously varies depending on mode, terrain, etc. I have find it plenty for 15-20 miles and 2500-3500' elevation. And yes, the SRAM Transmission is real. Real awesome! I wanted the pnw with the 38, coil, trp brakes but they were going to be longer. I'm not patient so I went with the top end. I've had the bike a couple months and loving it. I still ride my sc hightower 2/3 of the time but i like having options. Good video. Never been to Bellingham but i will!

Thank you! That's great information about the mileage and elevation you can get on it. This bike seems like a great option for the quiver if you can spare the money. I like how they kept the frames the same between them just switched up the components so you could change it to the PNW version overtime. How do you like the full 29r vs mullet?

@@MTB_Corbin I don't think I'm skilled enough to care. My hightower is 29 so it's all good. 1.5" (really half that) might be way different for tight turns or pedal strike spots but I think for 90% of us, it's not significant. The elite 10% can complain on PB Forums. I just want to ride and enjoy it! P.s. for the range, I still have 30-40% left after those rides. There's more in the tank. I'll take a lighter bike all day.

I bought a Transition Sentinel this last year, and really enjoy the bike. I also like the grass roots background of the Transition bicycle company. I'm not ready, yet, to jump into buying an e-bike like this, but will be keeping an eye on it to see how it holds up, and look for some improvements over the next few years. I also want to see how e-bike support with local bike shops develops.

I was interested in the Relay ever since announcement, I kept hoping a mid weight+power ebike that I could still pedal without power would be the best of both worlds, but reality seems like we're still better off committing to one end or the other with a spicy light weight like the Orbea Rise or full weight and power, which minus the headset cables and non-removable battery the Wild seems top notch. I think it's just too early for technology right now to make a bike that can be both things, only other ground breaker I see is that Giant that's lower weight with full power, but sacrifices battery to do it. I also think the new Scor 4060 Z looks great

I agree with you... I was wanting a light weight (around 35lbs with a motor lol) but it doesn't seem like that's realistic. I was watching the Loam Wolf go through the ebike showdown of 2022 and 2023 and fell in love the the Fizzari Timp Peak. I definitely realized that I like the idea of a full power, large battery ebike to fit a specific use case. Rather than having a light weight eMTB blur the lines for which my enduro bike could also be used. The Scor looked awesome as well!

Loam Wolfs shootouts are KILLER, thanks to them put the Peak up there for me and the Altitude too lol I feel like another year could go by and I still won't be able to pick one to commit to buying 🥲 I'm a noob to all this though my big fear is, I don't know where do I go for maintenance or if I have a motor issue for a direct to consumer brand like Fezzari

Nice review ! One thing you said is you're looking for a bike to ride 5-6 hours and I don't think there is something like that available today. Full power bikes with 630 batteries will last about as long as the Fazua ride60 430 system.Even going to something like a Bosch 750 it's hard to reach those kind of riding hours. Of course it depends on rider weight/fitness,terrain and bike spec but we're just not there yet.

I’m 220 w/o gears and have taken my Levo on 6 hour rides. 27-32 miles and 5500-6400’ elevation. I would like. Relay or Levo SL but would worried I’d miss the range for big days…

@@MTB_Corbin I'm in Eco 95% of the time...bump it to trail for some tech climb and 30 miles is pretty easy to achieve. My next long day I'll detune it half way through the ride to try and get a little more. Last summer I was involved in a ebike weekend in the PA/Sequim area with mostly Levo's and 2 Relay's with company rippers on them. They had just as much juice left at the end of the 3 days as the rest of us. The Relay is incredibly well thought out IMO and I'll defiantly have one in the future as the 15lb difference....is a big deal. The plastic mode selector, like you mentioned, is junk.

Do you think the bike might feel too planted because of the coil shock? Great video btw!

  • @MTB_Corbin

    @MTB_Corbin

    Жыл бұрын

Thanks Flo! I think the coil definitely adds to the stability since it feels so plush. Seriously it ate up all the chatter and had great progression as I went through the travel from casing everything. I felt my back tire was only leaving the ground when I forced it to. By far my favorite thing about the bike was the suspension platform.

I've heard a lot of people loving the new RS coil claiming its more poppy vs others like fox/push, though that might be bike kinematic specific (Arrival 170) I definitely want to try one of those

I’m looking at the Fezzari Timp peak. 50lbs with the 635wh battery or about 47lbs with the 504wh battery. With some Carbon bits and lighter wheels, your looking at 46lbs with pedals and full 85Nm

I demo’d the Timp Peak and was impressed. I’m currently on a Scott Ransom eRIDE 920, which I’ve really liked, but I have to admit that the Timp Peak was noticeably lighter and a better jumper. I do prefer Bosch over Shimano though. 🤔
