Transforming Pakistan: from Poverty to Prosperity | Dr. Manzoor Ahmad and Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy

Pakistan may have inherited many problems, but in its first half, its performance was much better than many other developing countries. Something started going wrong from the 1980s onwards. What was it, and how can it be rectified? What lessons can we learn from other developing countries that were once facing similar economic challenges and then turned around their economies and are now considered highly successful? There may be many reasons why some countries fail, and others succeed, but one difference is apparent. Those who opened their economies to international trade grew, while those who isolated themselves could not prosper. What can Pakistan do to liberalize its trade and integrate regionally and globally?
About the Speaker:
Dr. Manzoor Ahmad is currently serving as an international trade arbitrator at WTO and a Senior Fellow at PIDE. He previously served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to WTO; Director, Food and Agriculture Organization to UN and Member (Customs) at FBR. He is a regular columnist on Pakistan’s economy.

It is important to clarify that this graph shows only merchandise exports i.e. goods exports but India's service exports in 2020-2021 financial year is $75-$76 billion. Therefore, India's total exports in the financial year 2020-2021 are $493 billion. Which gradually increased to today India's total exports are $ 770 billion, which includes merchandise exports of $ 422 billion and services exports of $ 322 billion.

As an indian, to all the indians here - Pls don't spread hate here. Plz, its my request😢😢. If their country is not in good shape currently, we shouldn't be happy about that, because at the end of the day , its a poor people who suffers the most. We can have differences based on religion, politics, etc but as a human, I can't feel good by seeing someone else suffer. If they're wrong/misinformed in their discussion u can point to that in a civil manner.

Why even educated people in Pakistan are always wrong on facts? India's exports of 418 billion dollars in 2020 is of merchandise goods , the services exports which includes software exports was of the value of around 300 billion dollars, in last financial year India earned around 770 billion dollars including merchandise and services exports.

You should Invite people like Dr. Manzoor more often. Pakistanis are woefully ignorant of the benefits of free trade and an open economy. The discussion on most TV shows circle around 'relief' and what the govt can do to make things cheaper for people. Pakistani government policies and laws, and actions when it comes to economics, are criminally outdated and wrong. They stifle growth and prosperity. The kid in the front asked a good question about how free trade affects foreign reserves. Since foreign reserves also tend to be a popular topic of discussion in mainstream media, a bit more time on this issue would have been enlightening. Great job Dr. Manzoor. Keep it up

India were forced to open up its policy was because of PV Narasimha Rao then PM and not MMS . As MMS was on all major economic policy making institution panels during which India had closed economy and growth rate was not more than 2-4% GDP. So actually credit goes to IMF and political decision of PV Narsimha Rao then PM.

Transforming Pakistan Steps • Unilaterally declare a No War, No Aggression Treaty Against India. • Move to settle the border at the LOC • This should automatically achieve the following: a) The rationale for a bloated & all important Military simply collapses. b) So too the rationale for cosseting of terrorism & terrorists. c) With the importance of the Army fading, the civilian leadership can finally call the shots. d) Trade with India can be revived and create a decisive positive impact on prices of everything from medicines to foodgrains to vehicles. Pakistan will then be in a position to create policies & processes aimed singularly at the economic development of the people. So long as it continues its enemity with India, sees partition as unfinished business and Hindus as kaffirs, to be vanquished, the path is more clear than at any time in the past...it will take Pakistan to perdition.

Industries are the key to economic progress. Starting with SME and gradually focusing on large scale manufacturing. For that you need three things 1) Cheap Energy 2) People willing to invest. 3) Trained labour, engineers and executives. You messed up with the later too. China built you cheaper energy sources but its of no use. Now you blame China for over capacity production of electricity and debt trap!

Road from Poverty to Prosperity is a long and arduous one I’m afraid, to be traversed or treaded upon rather honestly, cautiously, carefully, patiently, perseveringly and in a focussed manner/with focussed attention, working hard 24X7, in an equally transparent manner, with all the aims, objectives, goals and targets pre-identified, pre-set, pre-determined and clearly demarcated so as to be able to keep taking appropriate corrective measures simultaneously, in order to rectify, address or make up for the shortfall(s), under-performance and/or failure(s), if and when these intervene while moving along in that direction.

Pak establisment and elite should think about citizens instead of their own benefit. Their ego and selfishness is the reason for Pak's tremendous decline. They can easily be friends with India and get rid of all their problems 1 by 1. India never intended to attack any other country. But they have set up a system such that the kids are brainwashed in schools and madrasa itself. A few lucky ones get out of the country and experience the reality. Now there is internet, thats why youngsters in big cities are able to see the truth early on. But what I know of, internet is still inaccessible for masses. Sometimes I think, its Pak's own doing so they deserve this kind of decline. But on the other hand, when I see hopeless faces of common citizens who just wants to leave the country, it makes me sad. I hope people in Pak get some sense and stand up for their rights and against fake narratives. IK is one leader who had the opportunity cause he had the similar respect in India but then who is in-charge actually.......?

Comparing Indian industrial exports with Pakistan’s is like comparing economic development of BIMARU states 😂 with some of the coastal states of India that are highly educated, skilled, and industrialized (for example Andhra). Remember when Covid hit, most of the poorest migrants were heading /walking out of Industrial and economic centers of India back to BIMARU aka economically backward Indian states. Please study Indian states first. Study and understand why certain Indian states are million times richer and export oriented than some of the poorest states within the same country. Then see how Pakistani states match or compare with which subset of Indian states. Please don’t start this indo Pak war of words on this serious topic. Thank you. Peace 🙏🙏🙏 PS. There is an economic gap between Andhra and Telangana states even though they share Telugu culture. Interesting. Isn’t it?
