Ойын-сауық

You probably know this Autobot as a loveable lug with big muscles and a big heart - but that's not how he started out! This is the story of how a Transformer name can completely change in meaning, as we look at The Basics on BULKHEAD!

Bulkhead quickly became, and remains to this day, my daughter's favourite Transformer - precisely because he was, at the time of "Animated", brand new. He wasn't one of "Daddy's Autobots" but was new to things, just like she was, and that made him special :-) So the big guy will always have a soft spot in my heart, too. Plus, he's terrific.

I think your daughter will look at him fondly and think he reminds her of her dad! You did great there! Sadly my daughter is into Unicron ever since I showed her the 86' movie. Now she's terrorizing the house!

I think it also helped that we really got to understand Ani Bulkhead in a deeper way than a lot of cartoon "big guy" characters. He seemed to be driven by a desire for acceptance: his attempts to "play nice" with the constructicons, his fear of his art/creations being worthless, and even perhaps a desire to prove himself to Sumdac and others when strongarmed into working on Megatron's space bridge. A really great example of transformers' giant alien robots getting some incredibly human characterization.

I never saw Transformers Animated, so Prime was my first exposure to Bulkhead. He was one of my favorite characters from the get go, along with Ratchet and Arcee. Though he's more recent, he's more than deserving of a spot among classic Autobot bruisers like Ironhide and Grimlock.

Never saw "Energon," but I've heard about heard about that version of Bulkhead for quite some time. The "Animated" and "Prime" incarnations however, I absolutely loved them. I'd describe the former as a top heavy, more intelligent Patrick Star, and the latter as a caring, headstrong jock. I hope this guy appears in another "Transformers" show in the near future.

As an add-on to Energon Bulkhead, his Japanese name was "Sprung", which is Springer's Japanese name. A lot of the more random Energon-era name reuses match up a little better when you look at their non-dub names. Not much better, but at least the designs tend to look right.

They need to be careful about it though, just shoving in a new character won’t make something better especially if they are not well written or they end up sacrificing older characters to not hog up all the time for a character nobody cares about. That was essentially what “Transformers the movie” (the animated 80s one). They killed off most of the old characters (Including Optimus Prime) to make way with new ones and everyone was upset by it.

For the longest time though I though he was supposed to be another version of Hound. The stars on the shoulders, the front as the chest, it feels too purposeful to be an accidental resemblance. Ironhide was based on RiD Ironhide (Specifically a black repaint that looks like Trailbreaker), Ratchet was based on Armada Red Alert who was supposed to be Ratchet before name issues occured, Bumblebee being a sports car also come from Armada and the resemblance to Prowl comes from how Beast Wars Cheetor was originally supposed to Prowl but changed when they shifted to a new cast, Jazz is literally Jazz, and I shit you not but every design aspect from Optimus in G1 can be found on his first movie version. Window chest, sides of truck make the arms, back makes the legs, vents in the shins, smoke pipes on the shoulders, it's all there. I love the big green brawler with a heart of gold! Saw his introduction in animated, and loved him so much I got both toys. His intelligence and willingness to do the right thing was great to watch. Prime Bulkhead struck me more as the awesome doting big brother football lineman who lived to just plant opponents into the turf while caring for the safety of others. His interactions with Miko almost always helped carry the show for me. Honestly, of the three partnered bots, I liked Arcee and Bulkhead with Jack and Miko more than Bee and Raf, simply because I found all four to be better fleshed-out, more dynamic, and better written characters. Wreckers don't call for backup. They call for cleanup!
