    I only just saw Bumblebee last November, and it was a fun and charming film! I was disappointed that this is where I found out they were going next with the franchise. Everyone else’s “positive” reviews seem to just be positive because it’s not as bad as the Michael Bay messes. This film apparently spent two years in post-production and had five screenwriters. I was just turned off more and more by the marketing because it looked bland and severing too many ties with Bumblebee in tone and story approach. Very detailed and engaging review, Mathew!

    You really hit the nail on the head with how people seem to be nice to this one because it's not Bay since if you watch this? It really is just a cleaner version of what we have seen time and time again with the Bay films.

    While I wish the other Maximals, Rhinox and Cheetor, could have had more screen time and speaking lines, I honestly found Rise of the Beasts very entertaining. I'm also looking forward to what comes next too.

    Being a massive Transformers nerd who has experienced genuinely great writing/story telling in this universe with these characters and lore and this still being the quality of movie we get is such pain. I'd genuinely rank this below the first and third Bay films, it feels like the same type of movie, just with the edges sanded off. I hate a lot of the stuff in the Bay films but they at least had more personality than this one.

    I LITERALLY had no clue this movie was being made, was made, and was recently released, until about a few hours ago when reviews popped up in my youtube homepage. I adore Transformers, the comics, the cartoons... nnnnot the movies. Still, it should have at least vaguely crossed my nerd culture channels?? Wait? Ron Pearlman? Woops. Looks like I gotta watch this now!

    it's a shame the lesson they seem to have taken from Bumblee wasn't 'it pleased both fans+ critics' but 'it made less than the Bay films so back to formula'. That they trimmed the run time [it's rare now a days to get an event movie nearer 2 hours than 3] and avoided the worst traits of the Bay films suggests they were listening to some of the feedback but it's a flawed formula and given the last attempt to 'cinematic universe' Transformers was cancelled after 'Last Knight' underperformed, trying again seems very risky. Given he was given the daunting task of following on from Ryan Coogler and was only 30 at the time, I thought Steven Caple Jr. did a great job on Creed 2 and hopefully he can go onto better things than this.

    To be fair, as absolutely objectively garbage as the Bay Transformers movies have been... they still made a stupid amount of money. Bumblebee made roughly 450 million, on a budget of about 103 million. Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction both made over a BILLION DOLLARS.

  • @jamesatkinsonja

    @jamesatkinsonja

    @@Otokogoroshi True, there was a reason why they made 5 of the bay films after all [only stopping when Last Knight underperformed]. In fairness to Bumblebee it's budget was half of the usual $200 million for this series but financially I can see why they reverted to [slightly altered] type even if it is a bit of a shame artistically.

    Pretty much on your wavelength for this one; I was particularly disappointed because I have a lot of fondness for the Beast Wars cartoon, which, for a thing designed to sell action figures, gave the Maximal characters a lot of personality. Pity none of them had that in this film! No fair, I wanted random Shakespeare and yelling of "For the Royalty, BURN!" Oh, and what you said about there potentially being different versions of the script; so I spotted a bit when Optimus Primal asks Airazor "And the others?", she says "All gone", and I'm just going "What others, we only saw four of you lot get away in the opening scene?". In fact, that opening makes it look like their entire planet only had a population of five, 80% of which escape, which makes Unicron's devouring and destruction of it way less impressive.

    I haven't seen the Japanese dubs of *"THE TRANSFORMERS: The Movie"* (1986), Season 3 of the first animated series, and *"Revenge of The Fallen",* but I heard that Masako Katsuki (Sailor Neptune from the '90s *"Sailor Moon"* anime series) was the Japanese voice of Arcee, and I kinda wished they brought her back as Arcee in the Japanese dub of *"Rise of The Beasts".*

  • @HBarnill

    There's a really good Transformers movie in here. All they needed to do was to not have the Maximals/Terracons/Unicron included, give some focus to Arcee/Wheeljack, expand on Prime's arc and Noah's development. There are really good ideas that aren't executed well, especially when Prime's arc is far too rush and Noah's character is so inconsistent. But anyways, great review, as usual.

    It's a better version of the same sh*t. If this had been the second movie in the franchise I'd be more forgiving but by the 7th film I'm tired of the same story repeated over again. Chase super important mcguffin that in the next film will be forgotten and replaced with new super important mcguffin to chase after. I really couldn't care less anymore about whatever thing they're chasing around after. It will all be meaningless by the next installment.

    It is beyond frustrating that seemingly Paramount just cannot get the simple fact through their heads that the Bayverse for all the good it did in bringing TF back to prominence and bringing in this whole new wave of fans... is just not viable anymore. As you stated in this review, not a lot of TF fans really like the movies. Every concept the films have done in fact have been done far better in other media and even other TF media and once we got the MCU and other movie series? Audiences I think realized that they're better than this, that the TF films are not the ultimate blockbuster entertainment and that also a lot of them are just not good with TLK feeling like it was made out of both spite and desperation. It was the failure of that movie that led to BB being hastily reshot so that it could serve as a reboot, we should've been done with this. But instead they thought "Wait, people like the more stylized designs that hue closer to G1 and fanservice? Yes, we've found a way to keep up this mess of a continuity." and as a result we get ROTB, a film where you can blatantly tell that it is of two worlds, one of a creator's honestly cool vision for a TF movie that with a few tweaks could wind up great... and another of a studio who genuinely cannot understand that its audience is done with these movies and as a result everything becomes confused and I want to scream like Shia did for his last two TF films.

    After hearing his interviews, Steven Caple Jr. should've just rewrote Joby Harold's draft (allegedly since he has a *Story by* credit) from scratch since all of the stuff I liked about the flick seemed to have come from him (maybe excluding the G.I. Joe tease). If we got more of that, it would've been a more fun flick instead of a merely fine flick that I thought worked (personally speaking) in spite of the five credited writers who have either done nothing or wrote nothing but mediocre crap.

    It is clear that this film needed to be at least 10 minutes or 20 minutes longer than it was. Is it better than the last night and age of extinction?. Yes. I feel that it’s at least on the base premise a story that has a lot of potential aka the idea of hidden alien warriors befriending humans & staying to stop a war. Not too far from ET plus high action. Hell the multiple recent Netflix Transformers animated projects IMO capitalize on giving the bots personality, character development & cool stuff to do. For some reason in live action it’s wild how few of these movies capitalize on the same things or if they do it’s fleeting junk food with a momentary great flavor you forget 15 minutes later (like how I feel about the recent Bumblebee movie). I think everyone who keeps going at least wants the chance to somehow see the potential in a lot of the comics & toons play out. Bay’s completely dismal execution for the first movies has seemed to just resign this whole franchise into the pit of seeing as maybe the 3rd or 4th blockbuster someone might watch during summer break instead of the MCU like status it could have.
