I went to thrift stores and bought some old art magazines and coffee-table books, and cut out some of the photos to put in dollar-store frames. The result was better than I would have imagined.

Some of my most commented on art is framed greeting cards. Years ago, I found one printed on rice paper. People wanted to buy it from me at the frame store when I picked it up.

As the only female in the house (4:1 ratio) and a lover of Victorian & French antiquity... I mix the pretty stuff with masculine metals, leather, stone, thick wood, books, curious utilitarian antiques, etc. That keeps it from looking like grandma's house and everyone feels their style is incorporated into the home. If I do buy a mass produced item, it definitely gets a makeover.

I have a mass produced picture that I got from my mom. Shortly after she died unexpectedly, so I keep it. Sometimes is something in your house not done, but has great memories. 😊

Accessories... don't forget clocks. There are so many different styles, shapes, materials, sizes, etc. that they always look good in a room, shelf, or sitting on a side table. Good advice and enjoyed this video.

I have a few physical cloth maps from collectors games that I love. I love the maps even though I don't travel much (because I'm broke 😅) but I wanted to display them. I went to hobby lobby, bought some cheap frames and some scrap book paper that matched the map color as a background. I hung them up and they look great! People walk in my house and ask about them all the time. I'm like bud.. .that's Skyrim 😂

I think my home is curated perfectly-most is thrifted, some found from the curb on garbage days (then well cleaned!) and there’s a little bit from auctions. Everything has personality and a story, plus it’s stuff that would’ve been otherwise dumped in a landfill. That said, I have a few words that I think of (dogs, books, natural) and a color palette (aqua, yellow, lime, orange/ brown, ivory, green/ etc) and go from there. If it doesn’t fit the mood, it doesn’t come in the house.

Thanks for being the *only* youtuber on interior design that prefaced that not every item in your home has to be from your travels or one-of-a-kind. Like, why isn't it enough for us to just love it? Why can't the story behind a piece be that I found it on ebay or fb marketplace and I loved it? As a young broke person I don't have money for these global trips these designers think we all go on every other week 😂

This is the best decorating video, I have ever heard. I enjoyed learning many new ideas!

Choosing carefully like this should also keep your room from looking like a yard sale. Mine was heading in that direction, and had to pull back. One suggestion I would give anyone with family, is to start there. Your grandparents might be at the age where they are trying to downsize, (I am), and might have things with great family stories behind them. I have not only my own things, but my parents, grandparents, an d great-grandparents that I would love to pass down to family. My grandkids are still too young, but I hope one day they’ll be interested in family stuff.

Hi Maggie, I found you by accident and instantly fell in love with your style of explaining *__* Your sensitivity for non-violent communication shows how self-aware you are. With that I mean that you teach how to work with yourself, that it's ok to be you and different - not perfect! Thank you for not reproducing these forced self improving thinking from almost all other big channels on yt regarding home/declutter/... There are no self-deprecating comments wrapped in jokes in your videos. It is relieving, so when I listen to you I really can let all that go to just listen to myself, to what's already there. It can be as simple and uncomplicated as that! I'm curious what I learn from you in future videos :)

Loved the tips! I like to think my home is pretty unique. I’m an avid thrifter. I like your ideas of not everything thrifted is good. I tend to go crazy and then my home starts to feel too busy and eclectic like an actual thrift store. I’ve been wanting to go through to simplify and this video has motivated me to start 👍✨

I’m sure your home is super unique! Being an avid thrifter is a HUGE leg up! But yes, it can be super easy for people like me to over-collect when you see so many amazing pieces for such good deals while thrifting 😂

What's difficult is combining the two approaches I tend to see the most. On one hand, I really appreciate a PB catalog photo spread. On the other, I crave the warm/cozy of Caroline Winkler's style. I don't quite understand how I don't have to sell all my mass produced stuff in order to have a more eclectic, personal style. It doesn't come naturally to me.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! 1) of course having a more eclectic personal style is great, but it’s also not realistic for everyone to get rid of ALL mass produced items! I would just take it one item at a time, swapping it out for something intentional that you love, or buying another “mass produced” piece if that’s more realistic for you but being intentional in getting something you love (that is preferably more unique). 2) try and figure out what it is that you like about those two styles you mentioned. Compare photos you love and circle the things that you see repeated across those pictures. Maybe you love PB’s color palettes or dark wood tones and you find yourself always drawn to photos of a minimal white couch (for example), and then you love the coziness and use of vintage pieces in Caroline Winklers home. If you can try and figure out these “repeated” items you are drawn to and WHAT it is specifically that you like, it will make it so much easier to mix the two. You don’t need to have one or the other… use elements of both!

Thanks for asking - that’s a really great question 😂 the main point of curating a home (to me) is intentionally filling it with meaningful items… and sometimes those items are mass produced pieces that no one else will understand why you have them! For one, my husband really loves those prints, and designing our home requires a combination of the things that we both love, not just me, so I chose those over a different art piece I loved but it wasn’t his favorite. And two, the 2 thrifted prints above me are of places I’ve been and have great memories of with my family (not to mention I’ve gained a lot of inspiration from Ansel Adam’s work). One day I will swap them out when I find and can afford a more life-long piece, but for now I appreciate having them!

Great, but what is going on with that picture of a kitchen while you’re talking about US focus on luxury in the beginning? Is that a counter or a floor? Is that pic AI generated? It makes no sense at all. There’s a lip like there’s a backsplash on what’s meant to be a marble floor? It’s just weird.

I had to go back and find the pic you're talking about. It really does look like the floor is a countertop.

I dosagree if someone comes in and can define my style as "x style" because if thats what we choose as our style because it brings us joy, then it doesn't matter what you or anyone thinks. If it's gaudy to you or feels "fake", then so be it. If you can identify things as too much that style, so be it. A carefully curated home is just that: made for the owner to make them happy and feel comfortable. So right out the gate, you really went against your own point of this video.

Thanks for clarifying as I may not have explained it clearly enough! My content is meant to be helpful for people who don’t have a natural eye for design, so oversimplifying by saying “you shouldn’t be able to describe your style in 1-2 words” is hopefully helpful for those people who need a clearer formula to understand what having a curated home looks like. But absolutely - a well designed home is always the one that brings YOU the most joy… that’s the whole point of interior design ☺️

I appreciate you understanding the idea I was conveying. It just upset me to hear "curate the home you love" to "if I can walk in and know your home is x-style" then it's done wrong" Taste is subjective and being shamed for leaning too far into a style just feels contradictory to the idea of curating a home to fit what a person truly loves. Offering help to steer people in the right direction is great, but throwing in the judgmental statements gave off the opposite of what your original idea for the video is (which is great BTW) and it's why I clicked on the video originally. I wanted to see if there was anything new I could pick up on and use.

Nothing like calling others “basic” while sitting in front of framed Ansel Adams posters. It may be a rite of passage for college and first apartment for the last three generations which is fine they are discovering things but don’t lecture others.
