this is NOT a desert. It is a forested ,, steep mountain side--with plenty of running water. you can see that. the forest is largely cut down, though

It is theotized that wet agriculture could have started in Iran, in places like these where water for irrigation from small streams was easier to control. I did not believe it then since wheat and barley do not need as much water as rice. Terrace agriculture for rice was a big surprise! I am learning a lot from these videos.

Life grows where water flows! I suppose this video is still from the Zagros, Iran. I’m and I’m not too surprised to see rice agriculture here. I’m surprised because it’s such a dry and inhospitable climate here. At the same time, I’m not surprised because rice is a very tough grass species, and as long as there’s enough water and sun, rice will prosper! This cooperative seems ne, so giving more the rice terrace will soon take shape shape like those seen on the hillside of Bali, Indonesia and other Southeast Asia.rice paddy fields or terraces. Of all the agrarian tools used here, I notice that the farmer on this video uses a shovel to pick up mud and build the mud banks or walls for retaining and directing water. In Southeast Asia, rice farmers use hoes, which is a hand tool for digging, but I have seen them skillfully moving mud and building a mud bank. Thy basically slide top-surface mud and throw or sling the mud load into the bank. I could see that the oriental people with smaller frame would use the full body weight to pivot and lever to slide and sling/throw the mud load while a shovel would require mostly the strength of the arms! Human is just wonderful in making the most of what we have!
