A different approach to a college admissions video. The applications process as a non-traditional student presents some rather unique challenges, and at times does not feel optimized for those who are not coming straight from High School. A lot of this revolves around the overarching objective one should have in mind when developing their application and considering what to focus on, in addition to some of the common questions and misconceptions about Transfer students at Stanford University.
Expect videos featuring other transfer students and videos more tailored to Veteran applicants in the near future.
Feel free to drop comments below with more specific questions -- I'll try my best to keep up with them or perhaps compile another video that isn't as maddeningly vague.
I'll be adding resources to the description as I rediscover them

    The thing is it’s almost impossible to get into Stanford as a transfer, they basically don’t take transfers. In some years their acceptance rate was below 1%, it better suits anyone’s time and effort to apply to schools like Columbia UPENN UCLA Berkeley instead. Stanford is looking for people with insanely unique backgrounds like military hero’s or people who have charted the music charts.

  • @theonlyjoelj

    @theonlyjoelj

    I disagree. Considering not every person who Stanford admits as a transfer is a military hero or people who have charter music and many of them are just hard working community college students, your entire outlook on what Stanford is looking for is flawed. That’s exactly the point I was trying to get across with this video. If anything, Stanford is looking for people who don’t flatly give up just because the acceptance rate is low. It takes a certain kind of self confidence (or delusion) to be able to submit a good-faith effort application knowing that the odds are so deeply stacked against you. While I wholeheartedly disagree with the entire sentiment of your comment, I appreciate that you wrote it and think it can highlight an incredibly salient point regarding this entire process of transferring into universities like you listed.

    @@theonlyjoelj totally get your perspective when I was transferring I avoided those schools just cause I wanted to invest my time in schools that I felt were more realistic like UCLA which I’m attending. I do think your right not everyone is from a military background or musically gifted but there’s a lot more to Stanford than just a 4.0 gpa in comparison to other schools like mit who are similar levels. I was speaking about an overall trend where rates are super low and admitted transfers have something unique other than a 4.0. Acceptance rates can be dumb reasons not to apply but I do think not applying to certain schools holds water when you have 10 schools 8 are all above 6% and 2 of which each have 5 essays while hiking an acceptance rate below 2%. Ether way I’m super happy for you, being a transfer my self it feels like I was given a second chance. Your an inspiration to many

    @@MESSI-fx1ob Absolutely, thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts -- there's a ton of considerations to make when choosing where to apply and it's certainly inappropriate to sort of blindly navigate the entire process. I really just want to let people be realistic on both sides of the spectrum by also combatting the defeatist and pessimistic attitudes surrounding admissions that might turn off otherwise qualified candidates.

    Certainly some great advice here. It is important to point out that acceptance rate isn't everything and certainly isn't something that should deter someone. I applied as a transfer to universities from the sure thing state university to 54% acceptance rates all the way down to Stanford's 1%. I was rejected from nearly all of the high % universities but found myself accepted into the low % ones, including Stanford. Double digits didn't take me, but the singles did.

I especially like the parts when you spoke about how you should become the person you want to be not just to look good for a college, how it helps to not be the smartest person in the room, and how getting into stanford will not make you happy. And how the very things that made you excited to join can make you resentful. I think I tend to forget that my happiness is not gained from outside sources, and that last bit especially REALLY opened my eyes. I can also resonate when you said you took awhile to glow up haha. Glad that you got something from it -- but don't beat yourself up too bad about it. It's really easy to forget. There's a balance to everything: Stanford has amazing people and you're always making cool new friends, but it's also super easy to get hyper fixated on comparing yourself to others. Stanford has an amazing reputation as a school and has so many resources, but it also makes you feel like you've got to uphold a standard or achieve a certain amount to feel worth of the title. It's all so complicated, but you learn to live with it! So long as you're continually putting thought into it and pausing to reflect, you'll be alright.

    What you said at about 20:00 was really meaningful to me. I am attempting to transfer because I do feel that way at my current state school. I want to be challenged in my environment. It is less about the schooling and more about the people there that I can collaborate with. It is honestly very lonely to always feel like the smartest person in the room (even though I know I am far from the smartest person and I have a lot of room to grow), because there aren't other people to motivate you to excel and push yourself farther.

    Hey Joel! Hope you had a great week, and happy new years! Thanks for the amazing video; transfer videos don't really get posted often compared to high school straight-to-college, so having even one video like this is like finding a gem. There is a question I wanted to ask regarding this if its fine with you. Do you mind sharing your transfer essays, or at least one of many they require and some context behind the essay? How did you structure it, how did you plan it before going into it, and if its anything, do you think those personal experiences in those essays played a major part of the admittance? And if there's any achievements besides going to the military that you think might have played a huge role as well, that would be fantastic, so I can obtain a general sense of what to look forward to. Thank you! And by any chance, if you have some time to spare at anytime, could I get in touch with you for some quick guidance if that's alright with you? If it's fine with you of course. If not, no worries haha! Just wanted to put this out there just in case since it's winter break and assuming you're still in education. Thanks for the consideration!

    Hi! Thanks for your thoughtful comment. Regarding the essays: it's my personal belief that reading other people's essays (especially those with very different backgrounds to you) is *generally* not a productive exercise for an applicant. There are exceptions to that case, but they are typically less narrative-focused and more explicit explanations of circumstances (like if you have a criminal record, adverse military discharge, medical condition, etc). Most people (including myself) didn't/don't have the maturity to not try to reverse engineer a winning essay based on components you see in accepted essays, and the more you read other people's stories, the less grip you have on your own. Like I said, this isn't EVERYONE, but is the overwhelming majority -- good writing and good storytelling is a skill that isn't unique to applications. As far as my essays, I absolutely believe my essays played a large role in my acceptance. The only true commonality amongst all admits is a very strong self-awareness which is generally apparent in the way they talk about their experiences and their goals in life. I didn't really talk about any awards or accomplishments I had in the military, because frankly, there weren't a whole lot. From an "Awards and Decorations" standpoint, I was very average -- I'm not a hero or anything, I just was fortunate enough to be exposed to a lot of experiences that are not common amongst my peers of junior enlisted Marines. Moreover, as someone who is a serial overthinker, I spent a LOT of time thinking and digesting these experiences -- my successes, my failures, my regrets -- and I think that kind of thoughtfulness came through in my essays. That being said, I did see my FERPA file, and found that one of my readers said something like that I was "angsty, and didn't seem very happy", where the other said that I "had a great sense of dark humor, and is deeply aware of their shortcomings and motivations". You can't please everyone. It really comes down to how well you can convey how you background has shaped your worldview and intentions at the institution you're applying to. As far as personalized help, please watch my office hours video and use that link to stop by. The next session will be Thursday January 13th @ 6 PM Pacific time!

    The main reason I want this opportunity is because practically it will be helpful for the next steps of my life, not because this will make me forever happy. I've accepted that happiness isnt permanent and I will struggle constantly. But that doesnt mean I dont need this scope, its actually very much needed for me, and the environment where I understand I'm average will push me more. Thats something needed.

    Hey I'm am international student looking to transfer to Stanford. I wanted to transfer to Stanford for obvious reasons but was worried since there's virtually no data on international transfers. Also I'm assuming the competition is quite tough especially for intls. Did you personally know any intl transfer? Were they like God tier peeps (sorry for the generalization but it is usually the case lol.)?

However, they cost more than the college application fee itself..and I was left hopeless and what now, but your video really gave me a hope that maybe if I try just one more time, I might be able to transfer to a us university...maybe not standford..but yeah... somewhere...thank you man for the video....ivve seen so many many vids ..but i gotta tell, you seem to be the wisest and coolest of em all ..your words seemed unfiltered...I'm subscribing right away...thanks man

Maybe setting up a company or sth like that just to help sb in the street out. You sound really good self aware that is great for actually doing things you want. I do not know if i could be a good storyteller in here maybe i did not have to try to be, But just to say that i am very happy hearing unique advice from a person who cultivated self awareness and their own style. I hope i also be there next year. Bue

    Thanks Isaac! Other than just doing a lot of it, I don't think I've done anything specific for writing or speaking. I think volume certainly helps, and getting used to speaking and not relying on cuts (especially doing things on the fly, with no practice or rehearsal) has made me a bit better at riffing. I have a high degree of social anxiety, and talking fast has always been a problem of mine, so a healthy dose of exposure therapy and a deliberate effort to slow down my rate of speech seems to have combined with the former to get me where I'm at today

I was wondering if this would count as non-traditional background. And what should I highlight the most on application?

    HS GPA: 2.1 SAT: no idea, probably not good ACT: also no idea, probably worse Military service: '16-'21 USMC Cpl 0311/8152 straight outa highschool. Motive for wanting to go back to school: I fucked up and lost myself along the way within the last 9 years and I want to restart from where I was last passionate; as a freshmen with the dream of becoming a leader... In the military... Again. Honestly maybe I should just apply to a military institution, but I really want to study psychology at Stanford. Having witnessed the mentality of Marine grunts, being involved in the aggressive nature that is the infantry and seeing just how effective an officer with a psych major can manipulate his herd to follow with ferocious loyalty, it all makes me want to go back and approach the military from a different angle. With a better understanding of how the human mind works, I think I can better rediscover my intentions.

    I know this video was posted three years ago but if anyone can answer this question for me then that would be great. I did not take an SAT or ACT in high school I only took a PSAT and I did pretty poorly on it, but I did a lot of extracurriculars in High School and I ended with a 3.0 and right now I am in community college and I graduate this year, so far I have a 3.5 GPA, am apart of the Honors Program at my community college, am also apart of this National Honor Society called the NSLS, and I am going to be the president of my student government association, and I have worked five jobs from my time in my senior year of high school to now. So with all of these accolades do I have a good chance of getting in despite me not taking an SAT or an ACT in high school?

    Hi I'm a sociology and economics student planning to transfer this season. As you and many other successful applicants mention, you all have some STEM aspects and some humanity aspects, but it seems like I don’t have any STEM part except some AP exams and some econometric courses. Therefore, I want to ask if you would like to provide me with some suggestions on how to make me seem more well-rounded as I still have two months before submitting the applications. Thank you!

  • @theonlyjoelj

    @theonlyjoelj

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Xinrui -- I don't think that it's prerequisite to have some STEM aspect in your application! I think well-rounded can be interpreted in a variety of ways, including interpretations that don't really focus on STEM and its interaction with the humanities. I think that a lot of people achieve some appropriate level of "roundness", if we wanna call it that, by blending those two disciplines, but there's a lot of other ways to do it Don't think of STEM and Humanities as this one-dimensional continuum, where some vague median is considered "well-rounded", think of it more as a more complex shape where anything that takes your time, attention, and effort can be visualized. It's also okay to be specialized! A lot of people actually think that Stanford *only* takes hyper-specialized people who are, by definition, the opposite of well-rounded. There's of course some truth to that misconception, but don't worry about trying to synthesize a sense of well-roundedness. Focus on the things that matter to you, and if they happen to be disparate and wide in breadth, that's great! If not, then that's also great! The worst thing you can do is try to fake interest in your writing in the effort of ticking some loosely-defined box that someone on the internet (even like me) says gets people into X, Y, or Z University. I think that's sort of the core of the loosely-defined "authentic" box you want to tick. Obviously this is all very complex and one-size-fits-all approaches don't really exist, but I hope that this helps clarify some things!

Cherry picking details is oftentimes counterproductive to developing a strong application. I heard that credits for online courses do not transfer if the college does not offer its own bachelor's degree. Do you know if there's any truth behind that? I’m 99% certain that’s BS - there are a lot of transfers coming from Non-Bachelor awarding institutions who credit their units in just fine. I graduated high school earlier this year. I have barely a 2.0 GPA, I never took any honors or AP classes. But I feel like I failed myself. My whole life, despite loving learning and always wanting to work harder, I was, frankly, surrounded by people who had low expectations of me; my parents were just happy if I graduated high school, my friends either didn't really go to school or had bigger worries in their lives. My low minimum effort and natural talents seemed like a lot. I didn't realize how bad it really got until senior year, when I met my best friend. He's a high achiever, and the feeling of being left behind in the dust, of never being able to catch up really hit me. I realized how much smarter, skilled, farther I could have been if I had worked all those years. So now, to prove to myself I'm capable of more, I want to work from the ground up and get into a top school. Stanford is my dream (American) school. I'll be attending community college and working as hard as I can to then transfer. Thank you for providing this information to us, as there really isn't very much of it on the internet. It's a less beaten path, I suppose.

    HelloJoel, You are one of the main reasons I am applying to Stanford as a transfer applicant . I am an international Undergraduate Transfer applicant of 2023 from India. Some of the reach schools on my list are Stanford and Harvard. 1)Coming from a state board curriculum with enough EC's in the school campus but not beyond that, do you think I should also apply to regular decision of these colleges before my transfer application to maximize chances of getting in? 2)Or do you think it will be difficult to show enough growth from a Dec application for Reg.Decision vs March application for Transfer decision ? 3)Will admission officer see this as a lack of confidence? I would be glad if you could suggest me with this.
