I like to use Grid# on my iphone or ipad which places any grid I want onto a photo (in the device) which I can use as a reference with grids on the paper/canvas. No need then to put grid on or over my photos manually or in a photo editing program. I have tried the amazing da vinci eye programs but they need a monthly subscription. They use AI and your device (phone), alternating or overlaying your photo and the drawing process. They also have one for murals which uses two devices so that as you are painting your mural on a wall - you are viewing youself and your work on your ipad in your hand. You are being watched from another device (iphone) on a tripod which connects directly to the ipad. Again the relative transparencies of the two images is adjustable or it can strobe between you drawing on the wall and the image (something only some people could get used to). The amazing thing is that the AI can keep everything aligned even if you move or zoom in. Apparently you can make huge murals this way without even using grids. I guess the other 'advantage' is that you can make a film of it all happening.

Great variety of methods with sound pros and cons. Michele mentioned in another video about using tracing paper if you are having issue sketching an object from a photo. You can use the traced object to clarify what you are seeing and then try to sketch free hand. This is a perfect use of tracing paper bravo Michele. My 1984 words to live by “They were not loyal to a party or a country or an idea, they were loyal to one another”. Much love and good karma to all my fellow artist.

My favorite way to transfer images is to tape watercolor paper onto my lap top monitor or an ipad and use them like a light box. Some detail is lost, but you can see shapes with light/dark contrast through 140 lb watercolor paper if the room is completely dark. I mostly paint cityscapes, so this technique is good for getting accurate perspective. When I am done tracing, I remove the paper from the screen and refine the drawing with ink, giving the image more nuance and catching details that I couldn't see before.

I LOVE my scale dividers! They have been the single biggest impact on improving my drawing ability. I always start off by drawing a basic four square grid on both the image and my watercolour paper, ie dividing them in half top and bottom, side to side. Then I make sure the dividers are set tight (and I do keep checking/retightening throughout the process, otherwise yes, I can see how they would move and distort my image), and I always then work from the centre lines, NOT the edges of the image/paper. When I first began, I was using them to practically transfer the whole image, but over time, I have been able to just use them to make sure that I place key features in the right place on my painting. I then fill in the rest with freehand drawing. It has helped me enormously. I think the key thing is to make sure they are tightly screwed in place throughout. The only real phaff for me, is actually working out the right scaling, and not ending up with a part of the image going off the edge of my watercolour paper! If anyone knows of an easy formula for working that out, I would be very grateful! Other than that, I absolutely love them!

I find the proportional dividers really useful. Yes, you have to be careful not to move them, but it's possible. I really struggle with the envelope method because it involves getting the angles of the polygon correct in the first place and I can't seem to do this! I've never used the grid method. It depends what I am drawing, but sometimes just looking at things in relation to one another and to the edge of the paper is a pretty good method for me. I am still pretty new at this and my brain is gradually getting trained but it's quite a struggle! As for tracing, my light box is brilliant - very quick and easy, or alternatively, the laptop screen. No change in size, of course.

Thanks for this video Michele. I actually use another method altogether. I use procreate on my iPad to draw round the outline of my photo, which I usually use when I’m drawing pet portraits as they need to be a really accurate representation. I then print the outline and use trace down to transfer my image, however, I know this is a bit long winded and know some people who just print their image and use trace down over the image as you demonstrated, but I find it easier to desaturate the image first before creating the outline 😊

Yes accuracy for portraits is important. I once traced a portrait and still failed to capture a likeness, which shows it's more than just shapes!

Clear and concise as always! A big thank you for all your tips. I've never tried a scale divider, and now I know not to bother. I usually combine the paper edge technique with the pencil as a measuring tool. If I'm really stuck, I will resort to the grid method. I had previously learned the scaling the photo to your paper technique from you and use that, too! 👍👍

What I have found with tracing images or using colouring books - the drawings are often wrong! As you have said before you cannot make a good painting if the drawing is bad. I thought it would be easy as a beginner to use already there images but my paintings looked awful. Then I looked more closely at the actual drawings and found a lot of errors in them. Thank you so much for your help.
