Pro tip for removing plugs... Take a socket, Allen key, or what fits snug on the plug, make sure it's straight. Clean it if you need to. Then take a light hammer, I prefer my aluminum hammer, and smack the socket/Allen. Not be a jack-o'-lantern about it, but hit it good. The less it bounces off the socket the better. Then you will find it is almost always considerably easier to remove a fastener of all types. I've worked in shops for 18yrs and I've seen people using all kinds of leverage and fail, only to have me walk up and slam that fastener with my tiny 2oz aluminum hammer then use a harbor freight wrench to remove it. My theory is the vibrations traveling through the fastener breaks the rust bond between the 2 pieces of metal. I picked this trick up in a shop that remanufactured cat engines and we fought dozens of plugs until an old man got tired of laughing at us and showed us how it's done.

This is a fantastic video. I'm just replacing a failed k1500 tcase and the algorithm recommended but listening while I get ready for work, this is the kind of video that really answers questions for people. I will add that there several other new process tcases that are nearly identical on gm products. Mine is a 241c but there are 241,hdh241 and several others. Watch out for the one with the magnesium case half as the pump Will cause wear through holes. They do make a wear plate and several other internal upgrades for these cases.

Its amazing how much you can mix and match complete assemblies (or certain parts to go with), components, parts (internal and external), along with a bunch of other miscellaneous odds and end inorder to get your desired results and/or setup. And then there's after market upgrades and add ons.

The 249 transfer case didn't require special fluid because the viscous coupler is a sealed unit which has a silicone based fluid inside of it. The 247 transfer case uses a variable clutch pack instead of the viscous coupler which is why it requires the friction modifier.

Well the bummer there is that you are dealing with a steel plug in an aluminum housing. I have heard of people having success drilling the old plug out using a reverse drill bit. The hot is that at some point the old plug breaks loose and pops out. makes a heck of a mess though. They also bake extractors. I personally have been able to use a cold chisel to work it out

Look at Dr. Frankenstein over here never seen anyone combine parts from different transfer cases to make a good one but that's good information to know if you have to do it. It's also good information to know if I ever have to swap components of a GM transfer case with parts from a Cherokee transfer case don't know that I would ever do that but it's good to know it can be done. Last week I was doing some work on a transmission for one of my wife's coworkers and of course I took a bath in its ATF I immediately thought of you my friend.

But, I do like Bleepin' Jeep and that tool.

Hi Doug, I watch and luv your videos. Just got this 93' Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado 4.0 I'm stumped on what transmission fluid I should use for the transmision in here (the best used hopefully!) Mopar ATF+4 (Type 9602) or the Mopar ATF Plus (Type 7176) It has 219,000 miles on it and I was told not to have it completly flushed (just what's in the pan, due to the miles on it!) I was also told it's a 42 RE 4spd Automatic with the Select Trac/Limited Slip I believe. I would greatly appreciate your Jeep expertise in this manner, thx so much!

  • @DEInTheGarage

    @DEInTheGarage

    3 жыл бұрын

You will be fine with just about any ATF+4. In my experience breaking the bank on ATF doesn't pay out. Keeping it clean does. That was VERY good advice not to totally flush a transmission that old. Drop the pan and refill it is the safest way. I have heard a TON of stories of old transmissions with unknown pasts being hot flushed and the are dead in 100 miles

HI Doug, thx for responding back to me,.I really appreciate it!!! Most others don't so I stop watching their videos. Your video on the 242/247 is the bomb though I have a question that you may have stated already about the 242's. I'm pretty sure by watching your video that I have the 242 in my 93' ZJ Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado, 4.0 Note: My transfer case looks just like the 242 but the nosecone looks like the 247's nosecone in your video! I looked on the NP tag & I just could see Model 242...? & Gear Ratio 272. Could this possibly be a 242 HD? Is there any other way of finding out w/o pulling the transfer case and gutting it? Do I still use a ATF+ 4 in the case if it would be a 242 HD? Thx again for your expertise and responses.

Around the 14:22 mark you mis-spoke about the viscous coupler. The 247 uses the clutch pack where the 249 uses the viscous coupler. The 249 uses regular ATF, as the viscous coupler is a sealed unit that isn't serviceable, it contains its own silicone based fluid. The 247 uses special fluid due to the clutches like a limited slip uses a friction modifier, same goes for the 247.

hypothetical question. Can the rear housing around output shaft be swapped from one case to another. Such as your two in the video...... move the one with the speedo sensor on it.. to the other case..... ? In my case.... (pardon the pun) could I swap my TJ's 231J housing onto the 242J (and put the speed plastic thingy on the 242 shaft) so I can use TJ's OEM spedo. I'll be hack and tapping so the length of shaft sticking out won't matter... its being trimmed. Got to pull them apart anyway to swap the input shaft to get right length. Oh... on that... both are early 2000 T-cases (242 and 231. putting 242 in TJ)... shouldn't the gear teeth and bearing width be the same between the two?

242HD in all 4x4 Dakota except R/T. 242HD also in most Durango except SLT+ with AWD or the R/T (stock with AWD). That has the 244HD (all time, no 2wd). And the two I got out had the same spline count too. Installed a 242J case in my Durango using the stock shafts and yokes.

Are the rear u-joints the same on a 242 and 247? I'm looking for a drive shaft for my 2001 4.0l grand laredo. But all I'm finding is drive shafts for a quadratrac ll and I got a selectracll. So I'm thinking I can use a quadratrac since I got a 2 inch lift but I don't know if the rear diff part will bolt right on.

This is perfect for what I’m doing 247j to 247j but the input shaft is different lengths. Started the process but cannot for the life of me get the cases for fully separate only about 1 1/2” and it won’t budge. I would really appreciate any input. I don’t have any idea how you just lifted it up and they came apart

Quick question watched your video informative. But wondering if you know answer to a question since you work on these? I just did a tranny swap on a 2004 jeep liberty. swapped the tranny and transfer case together. Both Jeeps 2004.The donor jeep shifter has less like 4 high 4 low, the jeep i put into has 4 wheel part time , fulltime, and low. In other words I assume its technically 2 different transfer cases even though tranny same model and transfer case fits. The question is is there any problems with the differentials like is there a gear ratio in each transfer case?will my differentials work with any proper transfer case or are they mated by model. Does that make sense? I'm now worried about having a mismatched drivetrain. Hoping its OK, seems to drive OK.

I bought a 242 to replace my 242 transfer case. but the wiring is different my 2004 GMC Sierra push button shift has a seven point plug and the one I got has a 4 point and a 6 point plug on the shift motor. Plus the original transfer case had a star shape shaft going to the shift motor and the new one has a round shaft with two flat sides. Can I make this transfer case work by rewiring a plug to it or what can I do?

My Power transfer unit the dealership said its faulty. So they quoted me around 6k to 7k here in Australia just for the part w/o labor yet. The PTU in mopar is around 1.8KUS dollar. Dang. And then I did some google, and ebay they are selling the transfer case unit. I believed the TPu is part of that transfer case. And some selling it for 200USdollar to 500 or so. But I don't know if my jeep transfer case is compatible because one of the people I talked selling part told me which one I'm getting single or two speed. I don't even know what that is. My jeep cherokee is 2014 trailhawk. So which one should I pick single speed or two speed. Thanks. Anyway, I'm not a mechanic, but with the correct tools can I DIY them? 😅 because even the labour is expensive.

Hi, I own a 2014 WK2 and I wasn’t having issues with my transfer case but there was a noise when I just go out of 0mph and have that part swap and found out that my transfer case was cracked (nothing on the dash, no lights, no warning or anything) got it “fixed” but now it’s popping a 4WD Service - Service Throttle Control - and the car doesn’t run now, end up worst. The “mechanic” who fixed the transfer for the second time it’s telling me that he has to program the case. My doubt is that, is it really a thing? That he needs to “reprogram it”? It’s the 2 Speed Transfer case. I really think it’s a mechanic part only, the only wire that the transfer has it’s a small motor to switch the transfer form Low to High.

I gotta 94xj put it in 4h from 2h while in drive now it clunks a little in 2h at low speeds . 4x4 doesn't engage and sounds a lot more clunky and even more so when turning.. could this be the TC? Or front diff? This is a 231 j TC which I was wondering what the j means and if it's a beefy case like the 231hd u said we're so sought after. I'm new to Jeep's any help would be appreciated!

When switching t-cases and talking about driveshaft length, do the engine / transmission lengths play a factor as well ? Obviously a v8 is shorter than a i6, and I’m gonna guess they use a slightly different transmission as well.
