    This video was a major help for me. The trough idea saved me some time and worked wonderfully! There are many different options when it comes to differentials and axles on JL's. You really need to know what you have in order to match it with fluid types and capacity. Thanks for a fabulous video on this! - I paid an embarrassingly high amount for the Mopar fluids at the dealer but I wanted the purchase record and receipt to help with any potential warranty issues.

    Super useful vid! unfortunately, i just had this service done at the dealer a week ago. lol But i had them taking a look at the diffs and seals (since one was leaking) just to make sure all was well. it was partially covered by warranty so wasnt too bad, but i think the 4x4 service goes for around $499 here. thats crazy for how easy this is to do! thanks for the vid. Only thing i would add is where to find the recommended schedule to do these. i think for mine it was 40k for diffs and 60k for transfer case.

    Great vid. What color/brand of thread locker did you use? Thanks. And I presume you used a friction modifier in the rear diff as you have a limited slip diff. I’m curious about that, as I thought Wranglers used the brakes, somehow, to provide a limited slip function. I’ve got a 2021 Rubicon JLU with the 8 Speed and I do not have 4 wheel drive automatic, only 4H. Not that the type of transfer case generally has anything to do with the rear diff. Trying to figure out if I need the friction modifier or not.

  • @CheaperJeeperTV

    @CheaperJeeperTV

    Hey Our Bills999, I didn’t use thread locker, it was liquid Teflon tape. My JL has a Limited Slip Differential as an available option, so yea I added the modifiers as mentioned in the video. In 2018 the transfer case came with the Selec Trac option, but since then it was made available to more models if chosen. Cheers

    Hey cheaper jeeper, Question for you…how exactly do I determine the axel that I have? I have a 2019 JLU Rubicon …After some reading today, I see that there’s mixed opinions. It seems the first JL manual or 2 stated as you mentioned that the rear axel if towing to use 75w140. Although some new info I found (possibly from newer “updated” manuals) seems to state that if sales code DRZ to use 75w140. I’m about to do my first diff change and asking the experts (I’m a noob lol, trying to learn) if they have any real time info on this as seems they’ve changed? I know what I’m doing with my front differential…..but am on the fence with what to go with in the rear. Thanks in advance for any help. Edit: I know it’s a Dana 44 …..my question is more to how to determine which gear OIL I should use based on the mixed manuals floating around

    -- Differentials and Transfer case oils EASY to change .... Automatic Transmission fluid change NOT so easy. Exhaust pipe in the way. No dip stick, so a pain to refill and check level. Fill from side plug, but space is very limited. Better have small hands to get to that plug. Follow the transmission level check procedure after you fill, so as to obtain correct amount of fluid .... If vehicle is out of warranty, then use ATF+4 in the tranny and transfer case and most any Synthetic 75w-140 gear oil. Don't forget the additive for the limited slip rear end.

    The Jeep in the video is a 2018 Shara JL, 3.6L Pentastar, 8 Sp. Automatic, with Limited slip differential.. I'd check with your dealer for your Jeep, as I believe, depending on options and the model of your Jeep, it could have different differentials, and as such, have different oil grade requirements. For example, because mine had the tow package and the limited slip differential, it required an additive in the rear differential, and different oil grade requirement as well. Cheers.

    I think some people might expect the job to be a little complicated. Hopefully they might see videos like this one, and see that it's a very basic task. An easy DIY for sure. Thanks for watching.

    You paid way too much for gear oil, $39 quart for 75WX140? I got MasterPro Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-140 1 Quart (has LSD additive built-in) for $13.99. I bought the LSD additive anyway for $8.99 (MOPAR PART THE SAME). I did get an Amazon order for the 10mm hex as I didn't have that. Capri Tools 3-0611 Long 10 mm Hex Bit Socket, 3/8-Inch Drive, Metric at $7.99. This slowed me down a bit, but thanks for the tip on not removing the shield!

    Takes an hour or 2 to do all 3, and savings of $800-$1000 by me on Long Island, I do every 20K. Swap out 2 qts ATF with every oil change.

    @@TheSchmed You said you "Swap out 2 qts ATF with every oil change." ATF is automatic transmission fluid? In the Wrangler JLs the transmissions do not have a dip stick.
