TRANS MADEIRA -West is Best - LIAM MOYNIHAN full stages

Спорт

Trans Madeira is a big 5 day mountain bike race taking in a massive tour around the Island of Madeira - a tropical mountainous island in the middle of the Atlantic! The weather and terrain are super changeable and the trails are insanely diverse! Each day is a massive outing then the nights are spent in tents, in a different place each night and often on the beach!
Day 4 was in the West of the Island - a big day out in the sun. WE talk about how some of the start marshals were having asome laughs with giving comically bad info on the stages- as the race is blind we would ask them beforehand about what each stage provided. One marshal gave great info but the others like to tell us almost the exact opposite!
Another great big day out. 3rd place for the day, still 2nd overall for me going into the 5th and final day!!

    Hahaha yeh there were a lottttt of people crashing and getting injured. Very high rate of attrition. Thankfully I was riding within myself and making sure I kept it in my pants at all times to make it through the week hahaha!

    Hi Liam, Great series. I'm looking forward to taking part in the 2025 fall edition of Trans Medeira with some mates, and your videos are much appreciated. I was wondering (hoping really) if you could do a summary video of your on bike nutrient and how you planned that out. 9-10hr days are massive and it appears you only had lunch provided once your day started. Bonus info would be what you brought with you on the bike and used, what you wished you had with you, and anything you brought but didn't need. Cheers

    Not my video and I am not an advanced rider, but I was also on TransMadeira this year. So here some tips: In my experience, it was much easier on the TransMadeira to keep my nutrition and energy intake under control than I had feared. Btw, the days are long, but you are not riding for 10 hours. more like 7 hours I would say. Plus transfers and stages. Adventure day can be 11 hours though. Breakfast is served in the morning from 6am to 8am and is really rich and extensive. I consciously ate significantly more than I would at home, about 1.5 times to twice as much. That was my trick. There is always a snack station at lunchtime. On day 3 (adventure day) there are even 2 during the day, where you can get all kinds of food, snacks to take with you, fruitd, bread, nuts and sweets. I always ate quite a lot there too and took a break. In the evening there is dinner again, which is really good. Also delicious beer ;-D I had planned 2-3 bars per day, but often only ate 1 or sometimes 2 of them. At lunchtime there is pure water at the snack station and water with electrolytes to refill. In the morning I packed normal water (around 1.2 - 1.5 litres), then topped up with water with electrolytes at lunchtime. One day I only packed 0.8 litres for the morning - that was a bit too little.I had the feeling that more riders had a problem with water than with nutrition. But it was also very warm this year.I would recommend packing more water (1.5 - 2 litres), especially on hot days. The uphills can be quite long in the sun. With me I had a multitool, a tube, a pump, 2-3 bars, my phone, a light rain jacket and 1.3 litres of water. Everything in a hip bag and a small frame bag. A backpack is also a good option as you can have a hydration bladder in there. Also full-face helmet, gloves, sunglasses, neckbrace, body protection, elbowpads, kneepads. I needed all of this equipment (but not the spare tube) and I did not miss anything (maybe suncream). I recommend a LARGE duffel bag. Mine was fully packed, which is annoying in the tent. Takes too long to organize and repack if its super tight. I would recommend to arrive some days early if you can - so you have more time for your bike to arrive, which may get lost in the flight. Also check out the island and relax. On day 0 you can take the group ride - which is a good idea. Its a good chance to check your bike and get to know the trails. Important: keep your bike in good condition, have a spare tube, pump, multitool, be healthy and eat a lot. But MOST important: dont overestimate yourself on the trails. The trails and even the fireroads can be sketchy and slippery. 8 Riders crashed on Day 0 and did not even start - so they wasted 3000€ for the trip. During the race 35 rides crashed hard enough to drop out or dropped out for different reasons. So just by not dropping out I allready was in the top 100 :-D

    Do you get enough sleep in a tent during those 5 days of racing?

  • @LiamMoynihan

    @LiamMoynihan

    Ай бұрын

    No the sleep was tricky. I normally fall straight to sleep the second I lie down at night but it was super noisy around the tents and the first night I had a big spotlight shinging on mine all night that didn't go off. I had a sleeping eye mask and earplugs plus a sheet and pillow from home and still really struggled with getting to sleep so I think that is a factor in why people start struggling later in the week. Thankfully I've also got 3 small children so the body has been trained a little bit to operating on less than ideal sleep hahaha
