«Tram for Two» with Paavo Järvi and Gianandrea Noseda

How important is applause? And can conductors recognise where they are by the way they clap when their eyes are closed? Paavo Järvi and Gianandrea Noseda talked about this on their journey in tram no. 8, as well as about Wagner, their long-standing friendship and their joint attempt to make Zurich more attractive as a city of music.

Thank you Gianandrea and Paavo for an absolutely fabulous video. To this writer (real name Roger Sexton) who loves both classical music and trams, the idea of two distinguished conductors discussing their work while on board a tram is truly wonderful. But then in Zurich the trams are a central part of the city's life, just as the Tonhalle and the Oper are a central part of Zurich culture.

So much to say about this lovely video! First, thank you for speaking out so subtly, I know how difficult it is these days. Also, about the applause: it depends on how educated the audience is about the music. Thankfully, the more videos like the Masterclasses are online the more educated the audience will be (especially in American) and the more appropriate the response to the music. It is such a pleasure to see this and the Masterclasses. Thanks for bringing this to KZread, this will make a difference in the world.

Greetings from a Londoner. I can assure Gianandrea and Paavo that I adored their recent London concerts, even if I described them only as 'lovely'!

True friendships are hard to come by, great colleagues on top of true friendship is even rarer. How I envy Maestro Jarvi and Maestro Noseda that they both can sit down and talk like old friends or close kins do, to work on something for the better. When people think of Zurich, they think of it as a financial hub and an expatriate city almost like the European version of Singapore. However, bankers there and the community view classical music as a respected industry unlike in the latter, where senior bankers poke fun of how the national orchestra and the durian-like building exist because the sovereign fund is super-loaded, hence needed an outlet although irrelevant to the society. If, and only if it were the same where I am, how nice it would be... but watching Tram for Two from far-far away land is still fun. ❤

Lovely. Please come do this on a CTA train in Chicago. (... and always a good chance they'll be pot!) Maybe we could do interviews for prospects to suceed Maestro Muti this way!

Wonderful! What's a great idea with the tram rides! Already bought tickets for Mahler's 5th in February.

Wow, I'd love to hear Mahler 5, but then February, phew.... I'd have to satisfy myself with yet another video feed from the Tonhalle.

I think they are all worthy people but it seems a dialogue between people who work in a building material company:no one introduces and proposes some artistic idea no one goes deep..a musician should not be a "professional" but tend to be an artist that is to look for poetry ;have a good trip
