Trains & Trams at the Glenhuntly Tram Square - Melbourne Transport
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video we visit the Glenhuntly Tram Square on the Frankston line in Melbourne's inner south east. A tram square is a unique type of level crossing where 1500v DC train lines intersect with 600v DC tram lines at ground level, and are controlled manually using an adjacent signal box. Melbourne currently has three of these level crossings; with the Glenhuntly Tram Square being particularly unique as it's the only one with three railway tracks.
Here we see various Metro Trains' travel over the tram square, including Comeng, Siemens and X'trapolis 100 EMU's. The tram square is used by trams on route 67 between Melbourne University and Carnegie. Here we mostly see B2 Class trams with various A Class trams seen every now and again.
The Glen Huntly Road level crossing where the tram square sits will soon be grade separated as part of Melbourne's large level crossing removal project. This will result in the rail corridor being lowered into a rail trench and see the adjacent Glenhuntly station rebuilt. Works will be completed by 2024.
Date:
Various dates December 2020 - April 2021.

Lovely video. I'm a retired Brit but in our youth my wife and I were considering emigrating and Melbourne was at the top of our list. I love watching the videos about your beautiful city, particularly the trams, and dreaming about the life we may have had in wonderful "Aus". Thank you
It’s pretty funny how the trams bounce on the train tracks 😂

I saw Railways Of Doom in the live chat saying “All you had to do was follow the damn train, CJ”. That was funny. lol.
I travelled over that for years, going to work, I never knew it was that loud - as in the train I was shielded me from most of it, heck I've even slept through there on many occasions. I always though it was fully automatic, and wondered how many sparks would flow if the two electrical systems ended up switched together. It's a pity you didn't get a peep into the control booth.

me too, never questioned it or thought about what was going on behind the scenes. i was just always annoyed that the train was slowing down when crossing this point. but now i can appreciate the uniqueness of this set up - even though its no longer there
great job getting all this footage before it was removed!!!
I just visited Melbourne in May 2023. I’m American and it was my first time in Australia. I stayed in the neighborhood of Caulfield. When I saw Glenhuntly Road for the first time I thought it was crazy how cars and trams share the roadway. The New York metropolitan area doesn’t have a light rail system. In American cities that do have a light rail, such as Phoenix AZ or Houston TX, cars and trains are separated. The trains run in the middle of the street with cars on either side. Not to mention it was super strange to see the steering wheel on the right side of the car and left hand traffic. I did know that Australia uses left hand traffic thanks to the British. I’m not a stupid American. This was the first time in my life that I saw left hand traffic. I went to the Cayman Islands when I was about four or five so I don’t remember it so well. They also have left hand traffic.
all i can think when i see an xtrampoline crossing is "ouch"
Very nice! Just a little correction - the trams are actually powered at 600V DC rather than 750V.

There's a speed limit

In Germany, there are still 4 such crossings. However, there is only one where an electric railway line crosses a tramway. (Dortmund Obernette 750 Volt DC/15000 Volt AC). However, the tram does not run on the road but on a separate track. Until 2015, there was still a tram electric railway crossing in Leipzig. It is a pity that Melbourne is parting with such facilities. But as in Germany, such systems are unpopular and run on inventory protection.

How can the trains and trams pass through the rails, without derailing?

Nice video! Caught any sprinter transfers or Steele trains along the frankston/stony point line?
we will, we will rock you
@ThebusofdoomFSX would you say the best way to get to Sk Kilda would be to get off here and catch the 67 tram? I'm coming down to Melbourne for a holiday and just thought I'd check.

Your best bet is to catch route 96 from the city as it takes you into the heart of St Kilda via the light rail. You can also take route 16 and if you're coming in on a weekend, route 3a.

So Glenferrie Road will be the last tram square in Melbourne?

And Riversdale Road will be the only two tram squares left after Glenhuntly is removed soon
Where is Glenhunty
z3 216 is the only tram left with mk2 livery
How come the trains go slower?
@TurquoisechannelshortsYT

Because of the tram tracks
This crossing should’ve been given the flick years ago. In fact all the tram square crossings (well maybe you could argue for Riversdale Rd to stay.) should’ve been given the flick. Hopefully one day Glenferrie Rd is in the pipeline to be removed.
didn't you already post this a month ago? I remember this exact video
