    HSR is European toy, where railroads are mostly carrying passengers and there are a lot of alternative ways for freight. TransSiberian is actually meant for tens of millions tons of freight moved annually. And you don't ride 180mph on a track densely packed with 7000-ton freight trains.

    BTW, in the most cold regions (the eastern part of Baikal-Amur line, new Yakutia line and branches there) of Russian railways only diesel traction is still used. Not for technical reasons or any problems with electric traction - simply electrification isn't still done on these railway sections (and one case, Norilsk isolated rail system, electric traction discontinued). As well as nearly all shunting is done by diesel locomotives, even in electric traction regions.

  • @khuzhokov

    @khuzhokov

    8 жыл бұрын

    +wizehop It's impossible for human to drive train non-stop for 1-2 weeks. Also locos belong to local depots, so, at least loco will be changed several times during trip. Also, not all the train may follow to one station. They can be separated/joined on any station that has shunting locos.

    Hello! Please what camera didi you use and do you think a DSLR camera (600D) would work to shoot videos at -40 and for how long. Did yours ever stopped working after a while? Did you protect it from the cold somehow?! Did you just make this footages for fun or did you have a project or something?! I want to do the trans siberian in February. Thanks for your insights

    That's good stuff Geoff, looks like HD quality. I also enjoyed the footage from aboard the trains. The fruitcake crossing the track at 3:50 just doesn't realize how stupid that stunt he pulled really is. All he'd have to have done was trip or stumble and he would have been sausage.

    Railfanning in Siberia must be a brutal hobby. How do you keep your equipment from failing in -40c weather. Hope you seal your camera inside a big plastic bag with silica gel to keep the condensate from forming inside your camera body or lense system.

    Actually in the past, (1930s) the US was well ahead of the Soviet Union in railway electrification. The Soviets started to really electrify their lines was after 1960. And with the introduction of the diesel locomotive, US railroads thought that electrification would be more expensive, and much of the electrified routes were taken down. Today the only electrified main line remaining in the US is the Boston - Washington DC corridor and the keystone corridor.

    This can be avoided if you add some amount of, say, jet fuel or kerosene. Or even gasoline, in the worst case. There are officially 3 types of diesel fuel produced in Russia: summer, winter and arctic. Arctic one should be good at -60 (in theory :) ). So, actually, the worst problem is not totally freezing fuel, but eventual deposition of parafines blocking fuel feeding pipes or filters.

    +Juan Zuniga no, actually. First of all, first Russian public railway was built in 1837 and it was even wider, about 6 ft. Secondly, it was connecting Tsarskoye Selo and Saint Petersburg. Lust look at the map, it's the north-west of Russia, so tracks has nothing to do with China (and there was no war, by the way). So let me ask you, where have you found your information?
