Bonus inaccuracy: Hogwarts Castle is always depicted in the films with a chime whistle, very similar and possibly identical to that of an LNER A4. GWR locos only ever carried two single-note whistles, one lower tone for general communication and warning, and one higher tone "brake whistle", which was specifically for communicating with the guard in the brake van to signal him to apply or release his handbrake.

3:38 actually, the GWR did use Crimson Lake on their engines, but two classes. In 1909, some 2225 4-4-2T "County Tanks" were painted Crimson Lake with black wheels and frames. In 1919, some 517 0-4-2Ts (the class that spawned Oliver's basis) were painted Crimson Lake to match their autocoaches. Both cases were short-lived.

There are also some rumors of a GWR Castle briefly wearing LMS Crimson Lake and being trialed on the West Coast Main Line. LMS higher management was so impressed by the engine's performance that they initially tendered an offer to Swindon to build a number of Castles of LMS service. However, the GWR shot the idea down, and CME William Stanier was forced to design his own equivalent, the Royal Scots.

@@sirrlivNo. 5000 Launceston Castle is name of that member of the class loaned to the LMS. Doubt that it was repainted into crimson lake as sister engine No. 4079 Pendennis Castle wasn't repainted to apple green during its time loaned to the LNER in 1925. Other than that, the story of the LMS wanted to borrow the drawings so they can build their own Castles, only for Swindon to turn it down, is true. The backup plan was William Stanier and the rest is history. Plus, the Royal Scots were designed by Sir Henry Fowler KBE, not William Stanier.

The last standard gauge revenue steam operation on a big Class 1 railroad in the U.S. ran on Thursday, October 11th, 1962 on the Colorado & Southern's Leadville branch line, when steam locomotive #641 (a humble little 2-8-0 Consolidation built in 1906 by the American Locomotive Company) dropped her fire for the last time. After that, the only places you would find steam were either on shortline railroads, tourist lines, museums, and the D&RGW's narrow gauge lines in Colorado (which ran steam until December 5th, 1968).

The reason the Hogwarts Express crosses that viaduct is because canonically, Hogwarts must be somewhere in Scotland since it takes from 11:00am at Kings Cross Station to arriving at Hogsmede station after nightfall as seen in both film and books.

I do love the Hogwarts Express and Olton Hall too, but I’m not the biggest fan of the effect it’s had on the general public’s view of trains. During a BBC article on Flying Scotsman, I remember a girl said she liked it because it “looked like the Harry Potter train”. It worries me that many people might liken all steam trains to the Hogwarts express.

This is really nice. Even though I’m not into Harry Potter, I learnt a lot. Ps 1: the GWR also covered South Wales. Ps 2: Olton Hall would obviously have worked on the western region under BR, but the shed code that I saw on her front is 10A which was used for springs branch in Wigan from 1950-1958 and then Carnforth from 1963 until 1968 both of which were on the London midland region.

That shed code probably refers to her current base being Carnforth.

Flying Scott that’s weird considering Carnforth is in Lancashire which is nowhere near the West Country.

@@williamsfan9237 No, that's not weird at all! West Coast Rail, the company which owns the locomotive, is based in Carnforth.
