Trains at: Leeds, ECML, 09/02/19

A very good morning spent at Leeds station which is one of the busiest terminus stations on a branch of the East Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from London Northeastern Railway, Northern, Transpennine Express, Cross Country and freight from GBRF.
The railways first came into Leeds in 1834 when the Leeds and Selby Railway opened its line, it later became part of the North Eastern Railway. Its station was located east of the city centre in an area called Marsh Lane, in 1840 the North Midland Railway opened its line to Derby via Rotherham to a terminus station located in Hunslet Lane to the South of the city centre. In 1846 it was extended to a more central location known as Wellington Street, also known as Wellington Station.
A third station was built in 1854 known as Leeds Central and was opened by the Manchester and Leeds Railway and the London and Northwestern Railway. It was the biggest of the three and was jointly shared by the LNWR and the North Eastern Railway. However other companies had rights to access the station including Great Northern Railway and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
And then in 1869 another station was constructed known as New Station, this was done as a joint operation by the LNWR and North Eastern Railway which connected the former Leeds and Selby railway to the LNWR lines located to the west of the city, this was done via a mile long connection between the lines utilizing viaducts and bridges.
In 1938 once nationalisation occured New Station and Wellington were combine to form Leeds City Station.
During the blitz the Luftwaffe made a heavy bombing campaign against Leeds and the central station was heavily hit over the course of a few days resulting the heavy loss of life and the station needing rebuilding.
In 1967 there was some work done to the area surrounding the various stations, trains using the Central Railway station were diverted into Leeds City Station which then became the main station in Leeds. Central Railway station was eventually closed and subsequently demolished which also meant that some of the many viaducts around the city were eventually disused which can now be seen around the city as they couldn't be taken down which is a massive shame but also highlights how vast the railway network was at that time. During the rebuilding Leeds City Station was taking in roughly 500 trains every day and on average seeing 2.75 million passengers.
When the 1990's made an appearance the station capacity was at bursting point, between 1999 and 2002 Leeds was once again the scene of redevelopment, the work included construction of additional tracks at the western end of the approach to the station, improving the efficiency of trains coming and going from the station which would mean that they wouldn't have to cross one another's path when entering and leaving the station. The station was extended from 12 to 17 platforms which included opening up the former parcels platform for passenger traffic.
In 2008 automatic ticket barriers were installed which allowed for station staff to be allocated to other areas of the station.

Fantastic video from oop north despite the windy conditions. Great to see the GBRf 66, they are my favorite freight company. All i can say regarding the Pacers is they are not even worthy of ending up in a scrapyard. Be well and keep safe, regards Gary.

Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed watching this, the wind wasn't as bad as when I was at York but there was definitely a strong chill in the air which would cut right through you. It was a great day spent here and I will be coming back now that the strike action has been called off
Many memories from this station as I grew up in Leeds. Always remember getting the pacer/153/156 in from Horsforth into platform 1 normally and marvelling over the class 82/90 and the 220s. Those were the days

I totally agree with you there the MK4 carriages do suit the class 90s then the 91s it's probably because the class 90s used to work for VTWC running from Euston to various destinations such as Birmingham Manchester Liverpool and Glasgow.
Doesn't it look like Manchester Piccadilly great video!!
I was intrigued by the last four wagons of that first GBRF train. They were 'kit bashed' ex coal hoppers, where the middle was taken out to make them shorter.

my conception city :-P was in my Mum in Leeds but ended up being born 133 miles away in Shrewsbury. so I was almost a Yorkshireman but by the time I came out I was a Shropshire lad haha

Agreed. More videos at Queen Street, Central and other terminus/through stations like Stirling, Perth, Edinburgh and hopefully Aberdeen and Inverness

I went there twice
LNER use platforms 6 and 8 most of the time but do use 1/9/10/11 platforms.
Do the HSTs weigh More than the 225s. They do look a lot bigger.

Thanks to you I haved achieved lots of subscribers from 48 - 95. I do not like it when the HST's come in all the time. I like them though. So I always come to Leeds at 10:00. It is so weird how the HST power cars have an LNER and an EMT being used. I loved being there with. It was ashame that I wasn't there for long.

Back in 2018 the boss of northern and the mayor of Manchester begged on the transport secretary Chris grayling to stop these cancelled services so the mayor of Manchester wrote a letter to the prime minister Theresa may

Okay what annoys me about Northern is a) pacers aka hellhounds STOP PAIRING THEM WITH 150'S ITS JUST WRONG! Then b) 153's. Why on earth do they exist? Why can't they pair them together to make a practical 156? Like come on Northern this isn't hard. Pair the same kind of trains together, we know you can, you just decide not to.

No the 90s do not suit the 225s. They makes the 225s look ridiculous. They do not belong on the 225s. They are a different company to the 225s. The 91s are better than them and the 90s should only do the freight trains or the greater Anglia routes.

The 90's have been brought it because they are compatible with the MK4 sets, they are being used because some of the 91's are currently out of service having routine maintenance done to them. When GNER was in operation they also used 90's when the 91's were being worked on
