Love this!! Since I got my GSD last year I began hand feeding from the table because, well, I felt like he was part of the family. My three dogs are very respectful and lay around and wait for their morsels. Glad to know I’m not spoiling them, but bonding. Thanks for this episode Hans. You said you have 8 dogs - when I’m your age I hope I have that many too!

I am so glad I watched this. We have never used treats during training as Ry has always been wired to do whatever you ask of him as long as he get's a good boy. When we got him at 8 weeks he was potty trained (and incredibly has never had an accident) along with could follow 5 commands in German however we had a real internal conflict on the way all the puppies had been trained. You see the breeder hand fed them their meals as she trained them three times a day. So we had a puppy that would not eat until he worked period. He's always been a serious boy from a little little guy & it really troubled me. So we just began to reprogram if you will that he didn't have to earn his food which took a bit but we found he equally began to learn to value the praise he received when we worked. He has continued to need to be active in order to eat but I believe that is more of a metabolic process. I additionally was so glad to get your feedback on food sharing because it has actually been a debate my hubby & I have had so getting clarity from you is greatly appreciated & now I won't get razzed for giving him some of our food after we are done. Thank you again for all these wonderful learning opportunities so we can have even a greater partnership with our boy! 🐾♥️🐾

Thank-You! I don't do treat training. People ask me why not. I say, because it is like a Business Transaction. I give you something--you give me something. Pretty heartless. I put down food for everyone, because we are all part of the same pack. You earned it--just by being a pack member. The End.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of training with nature . it is a concept that is sorely missing in todays world. Sharing and bonding as a pack as opposed to an exchange relationship of you do this and I will give you that. I don't think that this can be over stated. K9's are pack animals , we should tap into this instinct as much as possible for protection and obedience. It is in their DNA , as well as ours .

And that's how you get there... Content from people that you love from people that you don't love but just make sure that you get in pieces of all of it because no matter who it is or what it is you still learn something good or bad. This is also what makes you start to differentiate between the bullshit and real shit. Just don't let your ego creep up like a lot of us did in the beginning because we all go through a phase of wanting to tell everybody about their handling!🤣

Some people confuse feeding with sharing. Sharing is always a positive thing. Unfortunately, people use food for training.

I've had 2 young very different pups YOUNG less than 3 months old that when first given a dried pig ear or cooked pig face they transformed and began growling, walking stiff legged forward wide eyed and (GSD)hair standing on end. This video just reminded me. One GSD, one was Poodle. I haven't had the opportunity to try it on more pups.

You can use food to teach behaviors but you don't want to become reliant on it. But do not use treats for reactivity or loose leash walking. Only during the teaching phase of a behavior like sit, stay, ect.

And there's so many ways to train with food are u against all food training surly food is such a powerful tool I don't train with treats, I use existential food, the dogs daily meal, I learned this from absorbing all the bart bellon and nepopo content My goal is to take the hans alpine reliability style of training and blended it with a little existential food training and add the power in the dog movements

Did you make a podcast about dog aggression yet? Such as owning one dog, but wanting it to be neutral around others when you encounter them or if you plan on getting a 2nd dog a little down the road. How to make sure they can coexist together at least while you’re present.

There have been a few studies recently on fresh food vs commercial and lifespan. On interesting recent study. If the dog eats food from your plate, it is far less likely to have issues with ibs or allegies. The thought was originally that this was just because the dogs had fresh food and more variety. But If you feed fresh that you did not eat, you don't get the same benefits. It is believed it is due to beneficial bacteria from our salivia. You can get the same thing n with raw meat and bones, but not cooked. This is another reasoned think good bacteria, but unfortunately not enough info yet. Even so on average - dogs live the shortest lives with all commercial food, the longest eating what humans eat and 1.5 years longer if they eat table scraps than if they eat dog food alone. Unfortunately study didn't cover raw.I Of course common sense applies. If a person eats only If mc donalds and chocolate cake, better to feed the dog dog food.I Oh and the army here isn't all gentle and no shouting. At least cadets are not. Hetherington the world for some kids though.
