Street fighter 6, despite having a boring training stage, has settings to let you turn it off for online play, as stages are actually client side in sf6. This includes spectators too, so player 1 could be on the grid, player two could be on cherry blossoms, and a spectator could be seeing the jungle.

For me, i do like some of the training stage themes from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and the one in virtua fighter 5 ultimate. I do like watching sfv tournaments when they added the cpt stages. That being said, as someone who played a good amount of competitive levels with a majority of these games mentioned here, whenever the training stages were selected, I just feel disappointed as there is a lot of cool looking stages to choose from. I was even surprised that KI was the first to have training mode, and that's a fun fact i am happy to learn about today! I'm super glad to see you also mentioned the training stage for the current KI and the in stage jukebox they had for it and the tournament stage for MK11. It was pretty cool to see some from DOA too. I do agree that they should allow the option to somewhat customize the training stages with personal designs and stuff like how sfv did with the dojo stage. Overall, a good video about the training stages in fighting games ^_^

One neat thing in training stages that isn't necessarily always true but has been common since their inception is that they tend to have a strong backing beat in their music at a consistent tempo through the track. It's not an explicit thing and it's not used in every game but it's a stylistic choice that helps drive it as a "training stage" by giving the music itself a metronome that would in theory be helpful to get timing down. Which makes it kinda odd how no fighting game has really implemented something like a visible metronome in their training stage or otherwise implementing rhythm-based teaching methods considering how combos, blockstrings or other tech can often be pretty tricky and are designed for a rhythm and so if your hands can't "feel" the rhythm you're going to keep dropping it - letting you visually register the combo is one thing but if you mess up on a link because your hand naturally gravitates to inputting too fast, having the training mode or combo trials lean you into the correct rhythm seems like a no-brainer.

  • @doublevendetta

Some games (BBCF being my favorite fighting game jumps out as an obvious candidate) actually DO use audio cues in TRAINING options to help demonstrate timing. The exact example you're trying to suggest isn't used the way that you're hoping it would be because really, given the size of most fighting game rosters and the therefore inherently wide array of timing variation from character to character, it wouldn't be terribly useful. What bbcf and I imagine several other games actually DO do, is something like use a sequence of beeps or other sound cues during something like example playback for a combo to show when and where buttons in the sequence should be pressed.

Man, I honestly HATE training stages used for competitive battles and they should be banned. One funny thing that some people have done with the KOF XV for Steam is that they edit the training stage to make it look like a basketball alley, some even pasted a HD wallpaper of classic stages (non animated, of course) which at least make it look more beautiful cuz also they edit the floor with a pattern very similar to the wallpaper stage used.

No lack of distractions. You're on your own. Time to put you concentration to the test. Once again, I look forward to seeing what you make next. Hi Baberuthless, Congratulations on another brilliant video, Though it's 30 minutes long the time flew by. When my eye sight was good enough to be able to see the screen Training mode wasn't even a thing. As my eye sight deteriorated training stages began to be more common place. Funny thing is that I would have loved them back in the day as they are rather minimalist so they remove distractions and make the characters stand out that bit more and thus easier to see.

The earliest example of a dedicated training stage I can think of is 1993's Eternal Champions. It's a cold, chrome room with a window of a tranquil evening waterfall in the background. It's less of a traditional fighting game training mode and functions a bit more like a Danger Room with minigames to text your reflexes, matchup knowledge, and hitboxes.

The Tekken Tag 2 Strategic Space stage seems to be a reference to the extra game mode Tekken Force available in Tekken 5. At least that's what I think it is. I totally get disliking training room stages too but the lag and distractions in other stages are often looked down upon in competitive play since some games rely on frame perfect inputs. Always did pick my training stages for the music since that'll be playing throughout my training session haha

you know, watching this video made me have a sudden realization: speaking as someone who primarily interacts with fighting games as a serious competitive player... why can't we just have a stage that's relatively simple and barren, but still "A Real Stage", like Infinite Azure in tekken 7, and then have the ability to turn on an overlay of gridded lines as a UI element only while in training mode? you could theoretically use such an option on any stage if you let your players pick whatever stage they want for training (which seems to be the norm nowadays; i feel like it's been a long time since i've played a fighting game that forced you to train ONLY on a designated Training Stage). that way every stage meaningfully contributes to the aesthetic experience of the game, but additionally, any stage can be used while training in a capacity that lets you measure spacing, and if you make sure you have at least one stage that is pretty simple like Infinite Azure, almost like it's the one most intended for training on (but not required), you can also have a stage that provides relative visual clarity for training purposes as well.

My personal favorite training stage would be from Mortal Kombat X, exactly because it's a pure contrast to the other grey bland generic training stages you just covered. It is a vast, circular room with blue and cyan lights pulsating through the walls and the floor, which already gives it much more life. Two large screens in the background show the fight from various angles, while the graphs display some random statistics. And to top it all off, the room will recreate a random stage's interactable objects in the form of holograms. All these elements combined give the stage a more lively and combative experience, while not making it so distracting, and I wish more FGs would get as creative.

Finally someone had the same thought as I do regarding training stages as the go-to stage for competitive FGs. I just found it so wrong that two of the greatest players in the tournament go head to head in an epic battle for victory in a location perfect for them: the...grid? The only time I was okay with a training stage was MvC3's Danger Room because just like you showed, it has some elements in the background. Plus, as a fan of the X-Men, the Danger Room served as a life-or-death simulator for mutants. Amazing content btw. Just subbed after I found your channel from Thorgi's Arcade. I'm eager to see more breakdowns on FG stages.

One point of ingenious design choice that was strangely omitted from this video is that SF6's training can be disabled in online play. The stages in the game can be set so that you specifically will never play in the grid, all without effecting how your opponent sees the game. It is possible for one player to use that setting while another set to ONLY play in the grid. By essentially adding a slider, capcom sidesteps the grid stage controversy entirely.

So you don't like KOF XV's training stage. Neither do I, I'm tired of the grid as well! That's why I got the Training Court mod. The floor resembles an street basketball court and the walls are filled with graffiti-styled SNK references. Some of them I don't even get! All the walls use the same texture so you're not missing anything behind the camera.

I miss the days when the grid didn't exist. If devs left the stage out of the final build of the game, nobody would bat an eye. The people who do use it, use it because of less resources being used and it's less distracting. But I would guarantee you that even those people would say, "WHERE"S MAH GRID AT?!" if the devs left it out.

I appreciate the simple grid stages for their functionality, and it's annoying when they mess with it and ruin the whole point. The grid patterns should be smaller so you can get more precision on your spacing. They should also contrast with the characters to make them easier to see. In SFxT, the characters have a blue hue so it REALLY hurts with that training stage's blue hue as everything melts together What TTT2 did with the various obstacles that you could train with all in one stage was nice, too. But since every stage in Tekken is unique, there are stage specific combos that you can only practice on those stages, so just use them. DoA6 has a walled training stage whereas in DoA5 you could turn the walls on or leave them off so you didn't have to worry about resetting your position after every other hit to try general combos without smacking a wall. DoA6 also has a wide variety of stages with specific combos that use hazards so, like Tekken, on speed you should just train on that specific stage, or make the training stage wallless for general practice. Everything about DoA6 was a bad design choice that made it just a worse DoA5, I swear... The Fighting Evolution stage gives Me vertigo with how tilted it is compared to all the other stages. It's like the camera POV is way higher and pointed down, but the angle of the characters doesn't match. That all being said, it is absolutely super boring to see every match played on them. I can understand it, though. There are people in SF5 rank that pick Necali on the beach stage specifically because of how the water obscures his floor projectile. I wish the designers would keep this sort of thing in mind so they could design stages that all look nice but also don't impact gameplay. The lag that overly animated 3D stages causes on top of the distractions really wasn't a problem until Unreal became the standard graphical engine. I like the old 2D stages that had movement, and especially the ones that changed between rounds, and it's why I adore that CotA training stage even if there are some foreground objects getting in the way. One idea I had to incorporate the function of the grid for spacing into other stages would be to just use floors with brick or wood panel. You could make it look like the grid without it being a grey void.

  • @baberuthless

    @baberuthless

    Жыл бұрын

That’s a good idea perhaps have it themed like a dojo by useing wood or brick to still allow for the spacing to be measured.

Training stages DO NOT reduce lag. There's 0 reason to stream stage data when each player can just render it locally. All other things being equal (no interactivity, same length, etc.,), each player could even choose their own, separate stage if the developers gave players the option.

In the specific case of CVS2, I would assume the training stage is kind of lacking compared to other stages due to it being console-exclusive and was probably made in a rushed way as an afterthought and not as part of the pipeline of the rest of the stages in the game

Not a big fan of the forced cinematic fights from Netherrealm, even Capcom tried to copy on Infinity and Failed. Even with its cool story Mkx and 11 story modes are rather boring.

In SFxT, you could customize the color of your fighter, and people who chose the training stage online would color their characters to match the stage, in hopes their opponent would have a hard time making their character out. That's basically all you need to know about people who intentionally pick the training stage; desperate for a tiny chance to improve their winning chance, even if it makes the game more unenjoyable for everyone involved.

Honestly I hate training stages. They're bland and boring and serve absolutely zero visual purpose. If I was a stage designer in any game and saw that the training stage was used primarily in competitive play I'd stop trying to make good stages. It's a slap in the face picking such a shit boring level over the more fleshed out locations. OR I'd completely avoid making a training stage as a massive FU to the fgc. As it is, I never set a training stage for anything. Not even training.
