TRAINING our Suffolk Punch STALLION after a long summer in the Pasture!!
Today is an exciting day, we are back to training our Suffolk Punch Stallion, Baron, after he has spent a long summer in the pasture with his brothers, Duke & Earl. Jim harnessed up Baron and spent some time driving him single around the driveway. He did a great job!!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Thanks so much Jim and Brenda for bringing us along for your daily work load. See you soon.
The bridles and collars are just so lovely with the ornamental studwork. They just look magnificent on the working horses.
Baron is so handsome! He remembered his training so well, intelligent.
When I was a younger man (later 20's) I was a dairy farmer. Didn't work with horses. But was small farm. Now I am an older man (70's) and your videos give me back the joy of farming through your daily activities on a small farm. Working it with horses is frosting on the cake. Both of you are a blessing to watch. Hope you enjoyed your cake and coffee. The Lord bless you and keep you.
Baron is one impressive beautiful horse.
Thanks, Brenda...total joy to watch Jim and Baron working together.

Brenda, is it true that you can buy a horse like Baron for under $1000?
Threes is nothing wrong with you flicking the rein on the back end of a horse, to simply get their attention. Jim and Brenda, I really enjoy watching your videos. Horses has always been my passion. When my family & I lived in Louisiana we had horses & went almost every weekend riding. I miss those days very much!
Baron is doing amazing ,a testament to your patience and quiet temperament.
Yes Yes Yes, This training stuff is what I watch your channel for. Thank you Brenda & Jim.🙏🙏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Jim and Brenda. Those cows are in beautiful condition. Those new horses are going to win at horse pulls.
Brenda you do do a great job brushing the horses they look fantastic
Thank You So Much for sharing your family videos with us 🤗
The condition on the cattle said it all. They look good

When you get him giving to pressure it will get better but he will always be left or right handed I start mine a lot earlier but that's fine every one has their own way enjoy the cake and coffee
After a long summer without working with Baron, He's doing great! You're not beating the horse with the lines, it's just a little snap, My Dad use to do that! When the younger horse didn't want to step up with the other horse, he'd give her a little flick to make to her step up!

I do that all the time. I never get round to carrying a whip, it's just one more thing to forget or trip over. Plus you're right, a tiny little tap or just a movement is enough
Thank you Jim and Brenda. Those cows are in beautiful condition.
Oh boy, those cows are in their 'Field of Dreams', if you grow it we will eat it.

Good one
So happy to see Baron again!. He sure is beautiful. Just watching Jim handle his horses is such a pleasure and I love Brenda's little tours of her garden & chickens & the scenery. Your videos make my day so peaceful. Thank you.
So beautiful... great hay field, hedgerows lined up on a sunny day, Barron and Brenda. OK Jim, you too are beautiful. Shoe came. Wow, it's heavy !! Love having it. xo Claire
For humans it is hard to understand that a horse needs to be trained on both sides of his body. Easy to see how important it is that the handler is confident and shows that confidence to the horse. Very well done to both of you.
Baron is doing well in his training!!!
I like your style of working around your horses, u speak softly n gentle but firmly n that’s the way I worked my pony’s n horses when I was able to use them !! A lot of great memories working horses in the field !! N I loved breaking a colt by their self too, believe it makes the best horse !!! N thanks to mrs Brenda for her help to it’s much needed at start up’s 👏👏👏👏
I'm here for Whitey. She never fails! 24:53 (& off stage vocals @ 36:16)
Oh my Y’all I found myself holding my breath while you were teaching the horse. So anxious about it. He did so well. I’m so glad. He is soooo pretty. Thanks for the visit.. ❤️
enjoyed your video of more training for Baron. He is responding very well to Jim's handling. Wish I had some of Brenda's cake.
Love it how calm he was in putting the collar over his head and taking the bridle👍🏼👌🏼👏🤠🐴🇨🇦
Well, that was exciting, so glad all went well. The neighbors are so impressed with the horses and I agree, they are lovely. ❤
Y'all take good care of your animals..😊
Enjoy your videos and enjoy watching them every time they come on. May the Lord bless and protect you and Brenda. Jim training the horses to work
Great video! Enjoyed learning every bit. Staying calm and in control when he was unsure is key. How they just want to please is a beautiful thing
Barron did awesome!! Good Job, Buddy :) Good Boy!!! God Bless
Baron is absolutely beautiful what a star he is he seems very confident, so pleased your hay is good it will make great feed for your animals in winter. Another excellent video I really enjoyed it
Jim your a true Horseman fun to watch you work that colt. People won't understand how hard it is because you make it look so easy.

Well said. I like how Jim let him get a little feisty there for a bit just to test him out. Lots of years around horses there and it shows. But yeah, always have to keep your guard up like Jim said. As the youngest of 6 boys , I can remember being sent in the house many times when things got hairy, "we'll come get you when it's safe"!
Pozdrowienia z Australii wspaniała rodzina i piękne konie zawsze oglądam was jak ciężko pracujecie
The quick snap of the lines is just another cue, we know you don't beat your horses 👍great video guys
Baron has such a big beautiful neck would look so good with roached mane. He almost looks as if he has been under harness for a long time. way better than the last time. he looks to put on some growth and weight also. Great video guys
Well, that was interesting. I am so glad he did so well, the Suffolks seem really eager to learn. I had my cake today too. Thanks for the upload.
I hope that you enjoyed the Cake 'n Coffee: you, both, deserve it.
Beautiful colts Jim, coming along well with the training too.
What a wonderful video! Thank you for continuing to show all the work you do.

Baron is doing great. I have a little solid colored paint filly that needs work. Watching Jim work Baron today gave me the idea to drive her. I haven't been able to ride due to a flare up of my old neck injury. But I can walk behind the horse! Keep these great videos coming.

they look fabulous! Great run with Barron!
Good evening Jim and Brenda, well l so pleased that it went well with Barron....l don't think it will take long at all.And once he's with another horse l think he'll get it almost straight away,he's a fast walker do you think.Hes going to turn out to be a very valuable and trusted worthy horse Jim,nice kind eyes he has.As far as his main goes lm all for a (hogged main) without a doubt.Thanyou for sharing dear friends, enjoy that chocolate cake....l bet you did 😋 much love ❤️
My goodness, you are making a lot of hay!! Baron doesn't only look good, he seems to be good in the harness, too. I always believed that if trained single first, a horse will become more dependable.
Love watching Jim work the younger ones. Love the training. Can’t wait to see more of that.
Baron is a big boy. He is going to take a really big collar. He has shorter legs than the other horses, but just as much mass. His low center of gravity is going to make him really powerful. I used to have to pull manes on a regular basis, and it is a pain in the posterior. It is especially a pain if you have a horse with a coarse mane, or one with really tender skin. I had to do it at a hunter stable, where some of the horses were coarse maned part drafts, and I had to do it on a Thoroughbred stud farm, where some of my mares had fine manes, but really tender skin and would not stand. Some would try to hurt you. Some folks just comb the mane from underneath with the bottom blade of a clipper until the mane is short. The clipper blade will just thin things out from underneath. Thumbnails are really useful to get a horse to move over in a tie stall. I always left halters on with youngsters too. It really helps if something goes wrong, and you need someone to lead him for a while, or tie him up, or tie him to another horse. One rule of thumb for fitting the bridle is to have the bit make one wrinkle in the lips on each side. With a colt, you don't want it to bump his canine teeth. What a good boy he is. He is doing so well for the little bit of work you've done with him. He's not afraid of the cars. The advantage of using your lines to make them move is they are always right there in your hands when the occasion arises. The advantage of using a whip is it get them in the mouth.

Thanks, you tie a horse to another horse? I suppose that could get interesting and create a fit! But,, if you are out no trees around , and one horse old and calm will hold the young horse fast. Interesting, always love your input. Thanks.
Nice video Jim and Brenda
Baron is one handsome horse! Thanks for the answer for the question I had about having Baron being "ponied" by an experienced buddy. Ground work is very important! Keep on training Baron and he would be a very good driving horse as a single or double! Coffee and cake, wonderful treat! Brenda, thanks for the awesome video and grooming session. I agree Baron needs a roached mane.
Barron is a handsome dude and did well with his "workout"! A sugar lump and a carrot might be a good treat. ;)
They don't forget anything. ❤️
I'm glad Brenda, n you, value grooming them too, it gives them a sense of pride too.. Tho wished you'd have left the camera w Brenda and horses munching hay, sounded so good. Well another time.😊 God bless you all. Love ya. (a NH kid😊)
Oh that is just a tap to get his attention. He is beautiful and seems to be doing a good job.
hi, jim and brenda. brenda, i bet the cake was good. jim you did a great job with baron, he was not crazy about that bit. jim and brenda, i love your video,s i learned a lot about farm life, and how to work horse. you guys are the best. thank you so much jim...N.S. canada, stay safe, tell trudy, i wish her a great year teaching, god bless all.
Omgosh flashback to little house on the prairie with pa out workin the fields and ma bringing him some this (usually water) while she is busy baking a cake or pie and cooking dinner for company!!❤️❤️ just so wholesome!
I use skin so soft on faces, ears, poll and hips. It does work. A little goes a long way.
I really enjoyed the running commentary during the fitting of Baron’s harness and bridal. Knowing what you are looking at and why you are making adjustments was great. Thanks.
Baron is doing great
Good job! What you need now is a king or better yet a queen Suffolk Punch to round out the royal family 😊
Cake and coffee! Sure sounds good! I’m glad you got a treat after a busy day!
Wow! 60,000 subscribers.
Baron did a great job, he young and i see he learning great. for his mane looks better short,
Baron did really well!
It's awesome watching you film the cattle feeding and the gathering up the hey that you sell it in their trailer
Brenda's birds.. good one... LOL
When putting on the bridle, that's always the moment when I know why you're cutting off their manes 😄that's so true.. but other than that it's still beautiful. Jim, I always wondered how much horses copy from each other? If it makes a difference when Baron would not see the other horses working!? I don't know. Either way, Baron's doing a great job (and you of course) 👍Wish you and Brenda a wonderful week! -Chris
Ken is happy today, it seems.. I think he is partial to his OWN kind. Skin so Soft is the best. Ys😊 Hahaha. It was funny seeing the cows in the corn field. I'm really bout cows..😅 I like mains "roached" too. I'm no expert but it seems smartest to trim the main to keep it out from under the tack, cooler haimes and harness. W each video i learn more about the harness. Ty guys. ❤ God bless you❤❤ n the horse❤❤❤❤❤❤❤, and barn kittys❤❤❤❤❤❤😅
I just want to say 👋 from Canada I really enjoy your videos I love your horses you and your wife are super 👌 I learn alot from your videos Thanks Mandy
Hey from the hay fields lol. Live with horses is never easy but if you are not in it for the love then you shouldn't be involved with horses. I so want to do more with my horses
Barron is so good. ❤️
Very nice Jim Brenda have a good day.
Great video. Thank you. Love the longer videos.
What some beautiful cows😘👍🏻💕
Another good video with Baron training. Thanks for sharing. Hope you all are doing good.
Wonderful video, very informative. I’ve been watching you for several months now and keep finding old videos that haven’t seen, hope I never run out. ❤
compared to last video the cattle are doing a good job on the corn field.
Very interesting watching your training procedures. I firmly believe there are definite situations that require getting after a horse by whatever means. No cruelty is involved. Personally i had great success using my loud stern baritone voice to my advantage. I could make most horses shake. About your fly problem. Get some fly masks. They work fantastic. Can be installed oner all your equipment. Cheap...effective...no chemicals. .very dirable.....

@@juliaforsyth8332 those work pretty good for a stalled horse. For a running horse those twines get to whipping around and i have seen eye damage. No such problem using a mask. One downside to a mask is....your horse will look like a dork! Lol. But who cares...the mask works.
Pretty much exactly what I've done so far. Except I've only trained minis... Still working on the 12 hand cobs, they need to be rock solid before they go out as we're in England which is extremely busy compared to where you are, we don't want to upset anyone
There's nothing quite like homemade chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and coffee or tea. I enjoy watching what you do with your horses.
One wonders what Barron is thinking is happening--if horses think!

Y'all are my kind of people I'm a new subscriber to your channel and I've been watching your videos and I love your content and I love how y'all work with them horses. Horses are very intelligent animals but it what you want them to do and it takes hard work in training them you have to work with them horses on a daily basis with the same routine over and over. What's the horses begins to understand and begins to know you then they know the routine and know what to do.

PG here.. The Cows are beautiful. That was actually quiet enjoyable and exciting watching you train this regal animal. Every video I am awed at his splendor!
I had to laugh about objections to snapping a line on a horse’s body to get him moving. If anyone ever saw how horses kick and bite each other, they’d realize that a snap of the line or even a whip used properly is little more than a fly bite - just a wake up call. So impressive how Baron moved calmly through the squeeze between the chicken house and the stand of corn. What a great training session - couldn’t have gone better!
Hayfields! Yes! You know, it just occurred to me that you two are about the only two people I can think of who aren't griping about the price of gasoline--no need for tractors! The horses are out there working to gather up their own food for the winter, as well as extra for the family to sell. Show me a tractor that makes its own fuel! You know, you could even get a draft-size meadowbrook cart for little errands, and save using the truck... ;) Just a thought...

Baron did particularly well. That can sometimes be different with young horses. You're not going to have much trouble with him. Of course, you never know for sure. I do like your patient approach. He doesn't turn around all the time, as some untrained horses do. He reminds me of a Belgian mare I trained. I constantly felt like she had already been trained. No problems at all, although she was already 5 years old and had been in the meadow with her sister (summer and winter), without anyone taking care of her. (only shoeing) I really thought at the time that she had already received the knowledge at birth. Would that be possible? Very different from her sister who didn't understand it all at all.

Genetics are strong, I was with a buddy in the field grouse hunting with his pup, a pure bread German Short hair... The pup lifted her leg up and pointed into the tall grass, I had already unloaded so I told my friend to get ready for a bird to flush, she is pointing there. He dismissed my comment as "she's too young, don't know how to point yet". Well 5 yards out the tall grass exploded and up comes a big grouse and rose up, afterburners forward and that bird gone! My buddy scrambling flustered, I laughed the whole way home that day and she did get her first bird, I remember the down feathers in her mouth on her lip line...great day in the Alaskan field, but the point, Genetics! He Underestimated His Amazing Dog's, strong genetics. . As Jim said the punch breed amazing as he/they approached the road, even impressed Jim!
Looking good Jim, Training Colts can be Fone and it's always a time consuming Laber of patents
Those Suffolks are absolutely gorgeous horses!!! Jim, as Baron's training continues to improve, do you think he can pick up the slack this winter/spring when Lady does more "maternity leave"😘 from hauling heavy loads of lumber? He looked great practicing and is such a fine horse!
