TRAINING our Suffolk Punch STALLION after a long summer in the Pasture!!

Today is an exciting day, we are back to training our Suffolk Punch Stallion, Baron, after he has spent a long summer in the pasture with his brothers, Duke & Earl. Jim harnessed up Baron and spent some time driving him single around the driveway. He did a great job!!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

When I was a younger man (later 20's) I was a dairy farmer. Didn't work with horses. But was small farm. Now I am an older man (70's) and your videos give me back the joy of farming through your daily activities on a small farm. Working it with horses is frosting on the cake. Both of you are a blessing to watch. Hope you enjoyed your cake and coffee. The Lord bless you and keep you.

Threes is nothing wrong with you flicking the rein on the back end of a horse, to simply get their attention. Jim and Brenda, I really enjoy watching your videos. Horses has always been my passion. When my family & I lived in Louisiana we had horses & went almost every weekend riding. I miss those days very much!

Baron is a big boy. He is going to take a really big collar. He has shorter legs than the other horses, but just as much mass. His low center of gravity is going to make him really powerful. I used to have to pull manes on a regular basis, and it is a pain in the posterior. It is especially a pain if you have a horse with a coarse mane, or one with really tender skin. I had to do it at a hunter stable, where some of the horses were coarse maned part drafts, and I had to do it on a Thoroughbred stud farm, where some of my mares had fine manes, but really tender skin and would not stand. Some would try to hurt you. Some folks just comb the mane from underneath with the bottom blade of a clipper until the mane is short. The clipper blade will just thin things out from underneath. Thumbnails are really useful to get a horse to move over in a tie stall. I always left halters on with youngsters too. It really helps if something goes wrong, and you need someone to lead him for a while, or tie him up, or tie him to another horse. One rule of thumb for fitting the bridle is to have the bit make one wrinkle in the lips on each side. With a colt, you don't want it to bump his canine teeth. What a good boy he is. He is doing so well for the little bit of work you've done with him. He's not afraid of the cars. The advantage of using your lines to make them move is they are always right there in your hands when the occasion arises. The advantage of using a whip is it get them in the mouth.

I had to laugh about objections to snapping a line on a horse’s body to get him moving. If anyone ever saw how horses kick and bite each other, they’d realize that a snap of the line or even a whip used properly is little more than a fly bite - just a wake up call. So impressive how Baron moved calmly through the squeeze between the chicken house and the stand of corn. What a great training session - couldn’t have gone better!

Hayfields! Yes! You know, it just occurred to me that you two are about the only two people I can think of who aren't griping about the price of gasoline--no need for tractors! The horses are out there working to gather up their own food for the winter, as well as extra for the family to sell. Show me a tractor that makes its own fuel! You know, you could even get a draft-size meadowbrook cart for little errands, and save using the truck... ;) Just a thought...

Ah ha.😄, Jim has good balance and mixes the old with the new. I like that. I Like both. Baron is a cool Dude. Like a little boy that Mom does not want to cut the curls off just yet. :-)

Enjoyed the video! I could hear Whitey hollering for food at the end. They burn so many extra calories when they have kittens. How are the kittens doing by the way?

Good question, by the way, that was so funny when the cat took off running in front of the horse, the cat wants to be right in there. Classic, good one. Thanks for the reminder. :-)

Baron did particularly well. That can sometimes be different with young horses. You're not going to have much trouble with him. Of course, you never know for sure. I do like your patient approach. He doesn't turn around all the time, as some untrained horses do. He reminds me of a Belgian mare I trained. I constantly felt like she had already been trained. No problems at all, although she was already 5 years old and had been in the meadow with her sister (summer and winter), without anyone taking care of her. (only shoeing) I really thought at the time that she had already received the knowledge at birth. Would that be possible? Very different from her sister who didn't understand it all at all.

Genetics are strong, I was with a buddy in the field grouse hunting with his pup, a pure bread German Short hair... The pup lifted her leg up and pointed into the tall grass, I had already unloaded so I told my friend to get ready for a bird to flush, she is pointing there. He dismissed my comment as "she's too young, don't know how to point yet". Well 5 yards out the tall grass exploded and up comes a big grouse and rose up, afterburners forward and that bird gone! My buddy scrambling flustered, I laughed the whole way home that day and she did get her first bird, I remember the down feathers in her mouth on her lip line...great day in the Alaskan field, but the point, Genetics! He Underestimated His Amazing Dog's, strong genetics. . As Jim said the punch breed amazing as he/they approached the road, even impressed Jim!

Those Suffolks are absolutely gorgeous horses!!! Jim, as Baron's training continues to improve, do you think he can pick up the slack this winter/spring when Lady does more "maternity leave"😘 from hauling heavy loads of lumber? He looked great practicing and is such a fine horse!

Your rake looks like the one we had on our farm in the late 70's early 80's. I can't tell you the number of hours that I spent on a tractor with that rake behind me.
