Tom has not always been the biggest fan of running, but this year he set himself the goal of running a marathon.
With The Running Channel team behind him, Tom has a few weeks left before he takes on the Chicago marathon. In this second training update Tom is tackling his longest training run with the help of Sarah and Andy.

    Did my only one last spring. Longest training run was 28ish km (3.5 hours). Sure enough in the race I cramped up and blisters at around 30km. After that suffer fest, I mostly race 10K and Halfs 😄

    Done 2 marathons so far (first one solo and the other one in Stockholm) and currently training for my 3rd one in Athens early next month - I'm buzzing!

    It’s not just you, I cried recently while on the run and met another runner from the opposite direction swollen from crying so we shared a little smile and I am sending that same vibe to you now

    I always find that a long run brings out those emotions and does sometimes include a mid run sob, but i always feel good for it afterwards!

    It’s not just you!!! I DNF’d my first attempt (with an unknown injury). Finished my 2nd attempt 20 seconds in front of the sweepers 😱 took me 7:07:25, but I did it!!! Just keep trying!!! It’s the most wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you cross that finish line!!!! Worth all the pain & suffering 💪🏃‍♂️

    I did my first marathon on september 3rd in Gothenburg (at the ripe age of 47) and I would say that my longest training runs (32 km) were definitively harder than the race itself. The support from the crowd, the apprehension and the positive energy among the runners gave an incredible boost. I was only going to run that one marathon but, as they say, marathons are addictive so I am now preparing for my second here in my home town Stockholm next summer.

    I cried at the start of my first half marathon, just as the guy started counting us down. I looked at my family and bf and had to choke back a huge sob. I'm still a bit weepy when I think of my day this past Saturday, finished 9th in my age group. I trained and I finished, it wasn't fast but I did it. Keep going, let emotions over you and embrace whatever you feel. Keep running 💜

    I love my long run, it’s the closest I get to meditation. My mind empties and the time just passes. I get to the end and have no idea what went through my head for the last 2+ hours. Keep up the great work and all the best for the marathon

    The other day, for the first time, I did a long run with a buddy. It was incredibly surprising how much easier it was, compared to my usual solo long runs. I can't imagine what it must be like to run with thousands of other people.

    i can't count the number of times i have cried while running, from pain, joy, and mental exhaustion. you got this building that mental fortitude is essential to success!

    I'm 1:36 into this and just absolutely struck by your raw emotion. I cannot tell you how many times I broke down and cried as I trained for the Princess Half Marathon at Disney World. I was well over 300 pounds and my pace was on the verge of getting me swept. The emotions are overwhelming and real. Thank you for being so open.

    Crying at the side of the road because a session (9,5/10 time it's a loooong run) went bad is so REAL, mate. When I saw that bit, I really FELT it! If it's any consolation, I've ran 3 marathons (preparing for my 4th) on the authentic route from the actual place called Marathon to Athens, which is a hilly, hard route. You're crying is a very, very normal thing. It will all make a lot more sense at the finish line. I promise?😇

    I cant really express how much i connect to this series and your journey. I'm also running my first marathon this sunday and i recognize so much of your experience during training in my own. Similiar level of fitness, goals, struggles, etc. I have a lot of respect for you doing your longest run in the mountains, that would have destroyed my confidence. Good luck in Chicago!

    I've just completed my third marathon and, like the first, it was a bit of a disaster. The second one was pretty good, so I have high hopes of doing better next year. As regards the training, my age (currently 71) is something of an advantage when it comes to long runs. I can head out to a destination with a reliable bus service and a good pub. After a pint or two and something to eat I can use my bus pass to get home. Part of my problem with my two difficult marathons was, I believe, that they didn't have pubs anywhere near the finish. My second marathon was around Southampton in 2021. Not only are there plenty of pubs around the event village, one of them was gifting free pints to those with medals. Even those doing the 10k.

    You must be going for a 4:30-4:45 marathon goal? I’m not done watching yet but want to thank you for this video. Not sure if I’m warped but I find watching someone struggle to be so inspiring and real. Keep going Tom! It’s going to be so worth it and absolutely amazing. I fear I will have to do the same long run during a harsh Prairie winter in Canada in a few months!

    Well done, Tom! I definitely found the longest Long Run the hardest for exactly the reasons that you outline. And… “toddle-ooh” is the perfect sign off!

    Saturday, I had 32km scheduled. It was supposed to be at 6min/km so about 3 hours and 15mins. Well, not long after the first 100m, I realized the 1/2 marathon I raced the week before and the lovely anniversary supper I had with my wife the night before my run, had conspired against me! Add to that 4 significant climbs and you can imagine the plan went out the window after the first 15km. Admitedly, there was no crying, but there was a lot of stopping to stretch and a fair bit of walking while I drank and fuelled (instead of running). All in all, it was sheer force of will to not simply turn around and go home, but I got through the 32km in around 3 hours and 50 minutes. Was it an ideal run? No. But I look at it as being out for nearly 4 hours, so despite not hitting my target pace, I was happy at the end that I stuck it out and put in the time to finish it no matter what. Running doesn't so much require mental strength, but mental flexibility and an understanding that some days, things don't go like we want. Cheers!

    I agree Tom. Underperforming during long runs messes with my mental on race day. It can really stress you out if you don't control it though. I try to remind myself, bad sessions will happen, just like good sessions will happen, and I am a better person for experiencing both. You're going to do great for your marathon. Rooting for you bud.

    I would agree that the long 20+ mile runs are more difficult than the race itself. But you preserved and now you know you are mentally capable of going the distance. Good luck on the rest of the training!

    This really spoke to me. The longest runs are brutal. I'm running Amsterdam in a week and a half, my last marathon was 10 years ago, and I swear I must have blocked out how hard it all was.

    Love this Tom, I’m following the Runna marathon plan also for the Auckland Marathon - I have that 32km run this weekend - I’m so scared! My 30km run didn’t go great, so I’m hoping I can get through this one . Best of luck for Chicago

    Ah Tom! I'm thrilled to bits for you 🥳 fair play, no matter what, you persevered! I have an Aonijie running vest, I absolutely love it & luckily have had no chaffing issues. I'll be running my first marathon June 2024. I'm guessing your A time will be around 4hrs45 & your B goal will be sub 5hrs? Wishing you all the best, cant wait to see how Chicago goes for you.     Future Tom's advice is BANG ON! For me, the marathon is harder but that's because I love long runs and hate intervals (most other people seems to be the opposite) and that stomach issues came up that never came up in training. You look like you'll enjoy the crowds and slightly flatter marathon!

    You are doing great Tom. I have done a range of Ultras in the past 12 months and I am back training for a marathon and had some terrible long runs in this block which made me want to throw in the towel. Stomach issues, aches, pains and doubt. Training is a serious challenge in itself. Well done 👍

    Good luck in your marathon! It's funny, but training for 50ks and hopefully an upcoming 50 miler is fun and stress free for me... but the thought of training for a marathon fills me with dread! It's seems like so much more work, effort, and struggle to worry about pace so much! 😂

    Every run should include Frog vision 🐸! Way to go Tom, enjoy the marathon- I had to postpone my first marathon due to an injury but I hope to do it next year with plenty of build up. I have heard running the marathon is 'easier' than the [often solo] long runs due to the race atmosphere. You've got this 💪🏼

    I think you've got it spot on and the long run is harder than race day especially if you've got a big event as you've got. The crowds will definitely get you through. Just remember you're only 2 parkruns from the full marathon distance now 🎉

    Just done my 32km today, it was hard and emotional, I had the mindset of getting it done , done some walking on the last 10k phase, your not on own , it’s a mind game near the end of all the training, well done 👍

    Somewhere down the line in a few years maybe, when you’ve got a few marathons under your belt and are training towards an ultra marathon you will be running marathons as training runs! 😂 A little tip that helps me on long runs is calling them an adventure, rather than a training run. Try to mix your routes up, try somewhere new if possible. Take transport to somewhere and run home or vice versa. It helps to keep the running more exciting 😊 I really enjoyed this vlog by the way, it was so natural and honest.

    I just ran my first marathon two weeks ago and I empathize so hard with this video. It’s a mental and physical battle that is honestly indescribable if you haven’t done it before. Lots of Debbie downers on here telling you it’s too soon or your plan is wrong, etc. What they’re forgetting is that it’s your first time, it’s scary, and it’s freaking hard af. It should be hard and honestly I didn’t know how tired and fatigued I was until I wasn’t constantly running. I never cried during training but there sure were times (including during the race) that I was like why did I do this to myself or what the hell am I doing? It can be fun, challenging, demoralizing, and joyous all in one. During the race I was crying because there were so many people out there cheering me on as I was running a pretty inaccessible marathon in the mountains. You can be ready and it’s still hard as hell. It was so hard but I sure as hell will be back for more! Good luck at Chicago!

    I cry all the time on runs. Always have. Whether it’s sad things that pop up in my mind or I start picturing myself achieving the goal ahead of me or just thinking about all the hard work I’ve been doing. It’s really great

    I just ran my first ever marathon three days ago, and during race I gave up on most of my finisher time hopes and just tried to enjoy it (although I wanted to cry several times). But still it was an incredible experience and I will definetly run another one :)

    I'm currently training to run a half marathon. I just did the longest run of my life yesterday of 6 miles. I can't even imagine trying what you did yet. This was definitely motivation for me to keep going.

    I personally think the hardest mileage increase is from a 5k to a 10k. The jump from 5k to 10k for me was much harder than the jump from 15k to a half or 16 miles to 20 miles.

    @osuzorba I just started running in May and did a 5k in June. I'm making a 5k jump to half marathon. The race is far off so I'm taking it slow and trying to celebrate my achievements along the way. It feels like a big jump and it's been hard. The little achievements along the way are keeping me going.

    the long run can really be a pain, and its all a big mindgame after 20ķ what helped for me is not focussing on times or paces just plotting on and keep on movin. Hang in there bud.

    Marathons are crazy scary. I’m honestly happy with how it got into them. If I actually ran and trained for one, I don’t think I would have ever gotten to the starting line. It took me nearly 10 years before finally signing up for one.

    Will be running my first marathon in April next year and am slowy upping the distance at Z1 pace in the weekends, so the real long run will be less of a shock when it is time to do it. Ran for 2 hours yesterday, my longest time on feet ever. Running close to an hour more with the longest runs and parts of it a faster paces will be a challenge, my feet were already hurting yesterday. Hopefully it will be all worth it on marathonday.

    For 18 miles, I sobbed like a baby. 20 miles I was definitely more prepared for. Knew who I’d be running with, knew where I was running to (point to point) & just had to worry about keeping going. It definitely helps to be prepared for those longer runs! I’m less than 2 weeks out from Amsterdam now & picked up germs from school so that’s messing with my head a bit… but I have to believe I’ll have my energy back by then 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    I remember the pain of running my first 30km session in marathon training😖😣😩 I thought my legs would never work again. You're right when you say the crowd support will keep you going for the final 10k of a marathon, it's a huge factor in getting you across the finish line. Whether it's your own support team or random strangers , people cheering you on will make a big difference on the day. It's no less painful but at least you have motivation to run through the pain.😂😂

    Just did a 20 mile long run and I broke down and had to stop when I was less than 4 miles away. Everything hurt and I just felt like I couldn’t go on anymore. Got an electrolyte drink and some ice to put on my ankle, rested for ten minutes and I eventually made it. I’m still feeling it, full 24 hours later. I feel your pain!! This one is especially hard because I was doing it alone, while I had a friend with me during the previous 15+ mile long runs. The moment I made it to the finish made it all worth it though!

    I’ve enjoyed my training long runs more than the races I’ve joined. I do them for myself, no anxiety of getting there on time or getting a DNF if I want to stop for lunch, etc. The crowds just make me want to push myself more than I should. But I still do and appreciate races for a goal & souvenir.

    Marathons, more specifically Training for Marathons are a daunting process. Personally, I have a hard time staying with any training program - the best thing I’ve found (for myself at least while working a full time job and training) over the last few years is to keep loosely with the plan, listen to your body, and adjust accordingly. If that long run needs to shift a day or two in the week, as long as it’s still getting in there, it’s all going to be fine. I’m 3 weeks until my second full marathon of the year, and have struggled fiercely to keep on track for this one.

    Yesterday, the day after a 5k race, I decided to go do a marathon long run cuz I wanna do one in November if my parents let me. Ended up doing 21 miles fasted without any food or water, I went pretty slow (7:15 per mile avg) because there was 2000ft elevation gain, but I did negative split it. Last week I did 19 miles at 6:55 per mile and it was pretty easy. Hoping to get sub 3 in the space coast marathon!

    Hey.. many thanks for the video. Sometimes you film in great locations with beautiful landscapes. It would be brilliant if you could stick a subtitle at some point in the film "filmed on location at Verona" for example

    Did a 30K run yesterday, parts of it I would describe as 'Character building'. Looks like we may be going for around the sameish time, hope for 4-20, will like 4-30 and accept 4-40

    Greetings from Chicago! Good news is, our course is flat, and weather is predicted to be cool! Today and tomorrow it is 28, but it WILL be cool. And no rain. And low humidity!! I promise. 😅

    A marathon is such a different beast than lesser distances. Training for even a speedy half marathon can be just a lot of 30-45 minute interval sessions and long runs are still perfectly manageable in long-ish lunch hours etc. You can even run a half marathon on a cool day without carrying anything. But marathon training seems exponentially harder. Kudos to anyone taking on a marathon for the first time. It's hard.

    I did a 30km training run last weekend and spent the whole afternoon throwing up and couldnt get out of bed the next day!

    Tom - well done getting through your longest run! Was the elevation Sarah’s idea?? 😮 Dont worry - Chicago is flat…and cool…. And crowd support is great - you’ll smash it!!! Word of advice: Chicago plays havoc with GPS - be prepared to ignore your watch (mine recorded >44km overall with every km marker out by a long way). If you have a pace goal - pick up a “pace tattoo” from expo that gives you all mile splits you can check as you go past mile markers. Good luck - cant wait to see how you get on!!! (PS - Im Tokyo bound in March for my 6th Marathon Major!)

    I've had a significant change in mentality to long runs recently. I used to be exactly like Tom (like a couple weeks ago) but now I've noticed that I was very daunted and it I was always very slow at halfway then pick up as I realised it was on the last half. Now I just look for scenic routes I'll enjoy and go, then after a while I'm like "holy sht only 5k left" which is mad because 5k left would massively demotivated me before, but it's a reinforcement because I know I can do 5k, so no matter if I've done, 1k or 11k before that point, I know I can do it because I've done 5k before, and I just visualise going round my favourite parkrun - typically the last 5 is in boring concrete areas after a whole lot of hills, park, waterside and countryside

    Not just you mate. I once sat down on a bench and had a good cry during marathon training, and I am most definitely NOT a cryer.

    I hit a sub 3 marathon 8 days ago, been running for 20 months and those last 3 miles I knew it was on. But it was emotional, a lifetime effort, crying inside till the end and couldn’t contain those emotions after finishing! Running these long distances plays games with your mind. My tip for you is focus on your form every mile, keep focused, and tune out everything else. But always be grateful to yourself for the hard work and perseverance you’re putting in 😊

    It is definitely NOT just you. I have been training for Chicago....I said the same thing. Finish no matter how long it takes

    Try to go little by little. I ran 4 halfs then tried 25km, a week later 33km. I feel more confident, for my first marathon. Keep in mind, if you need to slow down at the beggining and take something to eat and water.

    Ran my first marathon in 2022 and running New York in 2023 and my longest run is planned for this weekend, I might just run my local parkrun 6 times, I know the course and water stops every 5km.

    I too had to give up on paces for long run. I also started bringing a ton of nutrition to not hit the wall (which happened to me before). I have a basic Garmin so no maps for me, maybe next year when I upgrade

    For me the longest training run is harder than the marathon. I ran Berlin recently and the last training run was horrific. Really got in my head.

    My guess on your target time - 4h 30? .. good luck mate. Good tip on getting used to fueling for the long run, practice taking chosen fuel and let your body get used to digesting it before making the marathon attempt.

    I've done 2, 20 miles runs one for my first marathon and one for my current training. Both runs were great runs, felt good the whole time, but I started crying as soon as I stopped both times. I really have no idea idea why, just some type of emotional release.

    I’ve run 22K fasted on Sunday and that wasn’t too bad. Not sure I’m brave enough yet to try any further. Think I may need some gels if I do 😂

    Have as many positive mantras as you can ready for marathon day otherwise your negative thoughts are going to overtake. Tell yourself you can do it! It will be hard but your mindset is the most powerful thing on race day. Good luck!

    I had a rubbish long run a week and a bit ago. Cut it short. Felt naff. Went out yesterday. Raining. Felt lightheaded. About to go home but decided to have a gel and a walk and that picked me up. But yes, marathon training is hard and emotions are real!

    Definitely not just you. Just done marathon #8. On each programme I get one good long run, the rest are either rubbish, or at best ok-ish. Nonetheless, it’s all hay in the barn, and as if by magic, it all comes good on race day. Stick at it fella
