Training BJJ 2 Days a Week is a Waste of Time

Can you get better at BJJ training only 2 days a week, or are you wasting your time?
This is a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question I received from Instagram.
The person asking this question is training No Gi BJJ and has a ton of other interests. In general he's just a fitness fanatic.
Because of all of these other things on his plate. He's wondering if he's wasting his time training 2 times a week of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
In this video I talk about how people mimic the extremes of BJJ like high level competitors. And it's not in alignment for their goals.
BJJ competitions and grappling competitors are fascinating. And their performances inspire us.
And in turn, we enjoy emulating this style of training. Regardless of whether or not we intend to follow that same path.
And in the the case of the person who asked the question. He has a ton of other goals and interests. So it only makes sense that he would not be as invested into BJJ.
And I try to explain why training twice a week is not a waste of time and how it can even be beneficial for your training because it can create better focus.

    MMA in general is about having fun, BJJ is just the best in terms of that. id say boxing dudes often take things too far tho, because they are just in there too ''kill'' and i dont fuck with those people. you gotta get lucky in boxing type things, where as BJJ, judo, wrestling you are there to have fun and learn a shit ton.

    Guys help me if I start judo by summer of 2020(Due to the Coronavirus)and I will only practice Saturdays and Sundays because of the schedule how long or what year is it likely I’ll obtain a black belt!?

    @@harverc229 black belts are not the goal. Have fun, learn, the black belt will come in time. Howevee, to get an idea of the time, you'd have to ask a judo guy which i am not, but 2 days a week it will probbly take about what... 6 - 7 years? Maybe a bit faster or slower depending on your natural talent But if you go in with the black belt as the goal, you will not get it. You'll get discouraged before getting it.

    I started 2 days a week, then 3. I got burnt out after 7 months and quit. If I had just stayed 2 days a week, I know I would have at least got my blue belt and would probably still be doing it.

    @@wolfmations Yes, that extra day was just too much for my schedule, largely because the gym was a 1.5 hour round-trip. Plus the instructive days finished at 10pm and all that adrenaline and hormone release so late at night made it difficult for me to sleep. I got burnt out from it after taking it too seriously, as the video discusses. Even when I got home it was all I could think about. Anyway, despite there now being a club right down the street, I don't want to go through all that again with my now even tighter schedule. I've replaced BJJ with Chess and weight lifting.

    when you say 2x a week, do you mean 1 hour per class, or 2 hours. Cuz that could either be 2 hours or 4.

    For my perspective, Jiu Jitsu is a journey, not a race. Just train consistently and do your best. People who train less put more effort into it because they don’t have the “whatever I’ll do it tomorrow” attitude.

    I beg to differ I know plenty of people who comes 5 times a week maybe even more and they put the greatest amount of effort in. I for one know I come into class every time with the intention of making the most of it. Regardless if I've trained only 5 hours one week or 10

    Ninja Girl yes but that also kills us on the muscle memory and mindset when I roll I got really hard because that's the only time I can test my skills I can't go to the gym and flow roll. That's a luxury for me

    I only roll 2-3 times a week. If I rolled any more than that I wouldnt be able to move. I incorporate some BJJ drills into my offday, routine workouts, but only roll twice a week. If I were 10 years younger and doing tournaments, then I would train more. I am now in BJJ for self defense and personal enrichment. It's all about your goals.

    BJJ wont offer you any stand up defense and a good striker would kill many BJJ guys. How often do you roll ?? I pretty much suck and I find more than 30 min of rolling beyond impossible

    David- Like I said above, I roll 2-3 times a week. Some of our sessions run upwards of 90 minutes. We had belt testing last night and did 10, 5 minute rounds. That was after about 20-30 minutes of drills and practicing moves. Plus I do cardio and drill on my off days. If you shore up your cardio and core strength, you can easily roll longer than 30 mins. Just have to build up to it.

    David- And regarding the stand up, most BJJ schools have MMA classes too. I trained in Muay Thai when I was younger, so now I focus only on BJJ. I may be rusty in the striking game but still hit the bag. But if you have absolutely no martial arts training, I would suggest MMA with your BJJ.

    I have been attending class now 3 times as week but i BAIL on the rolling at least once a week because i am not that strong and my body gets beaten up. I feel that taking care of body is top priority and I dont believe in pushing through pain. I hope the instructor does not feel that I am a wimp !! lol.. I cannot imagine 90 minutes of rolling at your level. The giant white belt spazes cause me a lot of problems because i am new and not as big

    As a guy with a job, kids, etc who gets 2 evenings tops a week to train BJJ (one gi and one no gi), this was a perfect video. I started in January, and while I'd like to train more, I feel that I get better each week in drilling and rolling.

    That's one thing younger folks don't have to deal with as much... Recovery. I literally would fall ill if I trained too much in a week.

    Also over 50. Two days in a row wrecks me, but if I can do every other day 3x is doable. Some really good weeks I've hit 4x. However, I've learned not to be too proud to take more breaks or step off the mat more than the younger guys. I'm also smaller than everyone else.

    REALLY glad to read this, 53 here and I am struggling to work up to two days consistently. Little over a month in, wrestled in college, and I REALLY enjoy it. Sitting at a desk for 20 years has really wrecked my body in ways I never thought it could. Would love some tips on longevity! Way to go man!

    I treat jiu jitsu like adding weight to a deadlift. Any progress is progress. It doesn't matter how fast you get better because you can always get better. It's better to stay injury and stress free rather than having the "I have to go" attitude. You should only destroy your body preparing for a fight.

    I used to train obsessivly. I used to swim 3 hours in the morning for my job, then lift for an hour before doing 3 hours of MMA training. All that got me was constant exhaustian, a whole bunch of issues, and a complex. Now I train 4 days a week for 1.5-2 hours a day and im 10x better than before because Im not constantly exhausted

    @@horacevu He is from Brazil. In most portugese speaking countries it is still called a kimono and kimono literally translates to a “thing to wear” so it’s not exclusively for females even though it is commonly used that way.

    43 year old man here. I go to BJJ class 2x a week and feel pretty good. The other days I go to yoga, and I noticed my flexibility works well in my Jiu jitsu class. The guys in my BJJ school that go every day are usually struggling with injuries. That being said, do what works for you!

    I've been representing the 2 day a week hour and half each class schedule for over 8 years now👍 yes I can tell a difference in the pace of some teammates that train almost 30 hrs a week getting ready for worlds but if I can hang for a while and maybe catch them here and there then that's one up for the working man in my book👍if I never got any better at Jiu-jitsu I'd still go train because I love it! (98% GI)

    Life Levels Music 8yrs is actually more then ibjjf minimum requirements and I came into it already having a martial arts and wrestling background.I competed at over 51 events in those years and train under Samuel Braga ( multiple time world champion) He thought I was ready for it. Not trying to sound snarky about myself just giving you some background to ease your curiosity as I have never wanted to seem as though I am over inflated or a sand bagger at any time.     I realize this video is a couple years old, but it and the comments are exactly what I needed. I recently started training no gi and with my work schedule I can only go 2-3 times a week, but I absolutely love it. I love that I suck right now and get choked out and arm barred every time I role. I also love the small progress I see each time I train. I'm pumped for my next day back on the mats.

    I am in the same boat as you, I started about a month ago, only 2x a week but I make the most of it I look forward to the rolling sessions especially w my coaches bc I like to test myself alot and I think the best way to improve is to go in against people well past your skill level, may not be for everyone but it works for me, I got my coaches into some decent chokes and just kept going as hard as I could, I knew I would tap but I try to make them work for it just like they do to me. And I always ask questions too, whether during normal class or the sparring, bc the more knowledge I take in the better I will become. You are there to learn and they are there to teach just like a normal school. Honestly, it is the highlight of my week.

    Great video Chewy! I have been doing bjj for about 6 years and ive only been able to train 2 days week. I have family with 4 kids. Guys that are training hard are for sure outpacing me. Some things I considered: 1) Am i doing it because i enjoy it or for promotion? You will get frustrated if its primarily for accolades. There is progression, its just slower. 2) There are phases in life. Kids do get older and move out of the house and one day you may have more time. 3) Family comes first. Better to be sucky at bjj then sucky at being husband or dad. 4) As chewy mentioned, you dont get hurt as much and have time to recover. Thats important when your an old guy like me. 5) i would rather be a bluebelt than no belt!

    It's better to be a no belt than not a fighter. :) It depends on what else you're doing. BJJ belts take time and focused technique training to actually achieve. Training say, striking arts might get you more mileage or it might not. Training judo or HEMA or freestyle wrestling, likewise - but you probably won't get a BJJ belt quick since a purple belt will seriously win against you... in BJJ at its terms, that is on the ground. Sometimes it's fun to challenge these guys to a sparring without BJJ ruleset and positions - then things can get interesting. Even brown belts sometimes fail, but a black belt and up will generally hold their own even against someone seriously good at striking, throws and wrestling.

    A lot of people train martial arts for self defense and 2 days of BJJ a week is good enough to hone in some good self defense skills for ground combat.

    Yep. Totally agree. I'm nearing 50 yrs old and I'm in great shape, doing BJJ twice a week and powerlifting 2-3 times a week. I completed the whole GJJ combatives and now I just roll for sport and hobby, to stay in shape and stay sharpe. Everyone who does BJJ should learn self-defense first, then go in whatever direction after that.

    YES! and this is what most instructors dont understand is that MOST probaly 90% of people train bjj for self defence. The other 10% started bjj because either they have people in their family who also train bjj so they just hopped on to it, or they want to be a mma fighter. I would say to anybody who is reading this who want to know how much times a week they should train bjj for SELF DEFENSE, 3 times is the magic number.

Just one small illustration of that not being true is if you're a girl (plenty of girls in my gym) then perhaps the most useful self-defence skill you could cultivate is how to safely get a bigger, stronger guy off of you. If I had a daughter, BJJ would be compulsory!

    @@bubblex1jhewt130 The consensus is that beyond blue belt most of what you learn is useless in real life. But having good grappling basics is definitely useful, however a good judo or wrestling school will teach them also.

    I am loving my two days a week. Keeps my body healthy and as you said my mind focused when I'm there. I signed up about 4-5 months ago and the first month I tried doing it as much as possible but it just wasn't as enjoyable for me. 2 days a week mixed in with my weight lifting is a great balance for me and has mentally kept me looking forward to my bjj classes/sessions which is better in the long run.

    I agree with you. I train two times per week. I mix in weightlifting and stretching on the other days. I've adopted a anti inflammatory diet, as well. I'm 53 years old and I'm in this for the long haul. I like how training bjj has given working out and eating right more meaning. It's true what they say, "if it's good for your body, it's good for your jiu itsu."

    i do 2 classes a week and one at home rolling session on the weekend with a buddy. I'm glad i have the time in between to reflect and recover. I've been at it for 9 months and i am beyond proud of how far i have come.

    Do what you can. This is part of training smart. No Sense in forcing that 3rd day if your ankle or knee might give out. Train accordin to what your body tells you. This promotes longevity in the sport, and overall enjoyment of it.

    Only been training jiu jitsu now for 2 mos. Training twice a week bc I have work and family obligations with no itch to compete. I already feel stronger and can see improvement, having a blast!!

    I knew a guy that trained twice a week with his son, watched tons of dvds and did some light drills at home and actually became really good. He won the worlds as a white belt and got his blue the same time I did even though I trained 6 days a week. I’m planning to do 2x a week due to my busy schedule and family. I’ll still do strength training and stretching in between though.

    I've been training twice a week for a year now, sometimes 3 times when I get a chance, and I've improved a lot. Maybe not as fast as I would have if I were training 4 or 5 times a week, but I can definitely say that it's not a waste of time. On days that I can't train, I watch Jiu Jitsu videos on techniques I want to focus more on and I keep a journal of moves that I learn in class. I've downloaded your book (and of course read it) and watch your videos.

    If you're young enough to be able to train bjj every single day without being in a constant state of exhaustion and mental fatigue then hats off to you. But even then, unless you're trying to compete at a high level, I think life is more fulfilling when you have a balance of lots of different types of training and activities. I love grappling but I think I'd start to hate it if I was just on the mats every day of the week. Twice a week is enough for me to feel like I progress without feeling like I'm neglecting other sports I enjoy.

    yea you can leave time to relax and do other things that can apply to other aspects of your life and feel enjoyment on the mats and the drive to improve by only doing 2 days

    I’ve been doing twice a week consistently for 6 years and I think you can progress really well if you are consistent and never miss those two days. I would recommend if you are going to do 2 days only that you study videos on the technique of the week, visualize techniques, and work on flexibility and fitness from home to supplement your training

    I served in the Marine corps in the 90s. Bjj has been good for me. I train two days a week as a 53 year old man. I enjoy my two days along with my other activities.

    Perfect video.I train 2 times a week and got already 2 stripes after 6months and itd exactly how you described it.When im at the BJJ gym ,i give my 100% because i wanna get better and because its fun and i know that my contract allows me to go max. 2 times.And im there.Every week.2 times.6 months consistently.And its so much fun and i wanna talk to my trainer if i can come more times because BJJ is so addictive and i could come 3 times.Its how hard you train and how focused you are.

    David i trained with them in my competition training.They absolutely had no mercy on me and it was very frustrating but also very motivating bc some day i will be on that level too.And you learn how to defend their attacks bc they tell you afterwards they submitted you haha.You gotta train with everyone to improve.On lower belts/stripes i try to be more dominant and submit them and when against purple brown i try to work on my defense,but its actually just surviving haha

    AS long as the guy is not going 100 percent and trying to injury me I dont mind. I had to roll a purple belt and he was super relaxed and then ezkel choked me and it was over. He was bored out of his mind and would then go off against the brown belt Coach

    I totally agree. I started jits at 50 and go 2 to 3 times a week. I also mountain bike regularly and have started getting back into rock climb after a long layoff. I will turn 53 next month and just now am a lower level blue belt. I see younger people who started after me, progress at a faster rate as they can train longer and more often, because they can do it and as I also have these other activities that I love to do. I understand that my road maybe a longer road and I will progress at a slower rate. It also helps to be able to turn your ego off at the door.

    Focus on your mobolity, strength, and cardio training and try to piece jiujitsu together as in not just one move but chains... More than likely you will pass young people up. I see them moving around wasting energy and go go go but some of the older guys ( I'm only 32 but work hard construction then train after) we get together chain stuff and flow.

    That's a good post Jody and it's good to hear you started at 50 - inspiring. I've started at 47 and did my first 3 day training week this week, as I usually do 2 days. My upper joints defo feel very battered! ha ha. I train with young guys and have worried that they will over take me easily but I guess I have to except that.

    1st and great advice. All in what you're looking for. Different strokes for different folks. I'm a 43 yr old white belt and I'm happy with 2 days aweek. Wednesday and Fridays I'm pretty sore from prior day of training. Just enough of happy sore, if that makes sense

    I'm 36 and if I rolled 5 days a week I'd be bedridden. 2-3 times a week is plenty. I workout on my offdays and incorporate some drills into it, but all out rolling....twice a week. LOL

    Joe Z, I was a 41 yr old white belt training two days a week. That was nearly 8 years ago. Keep going, I still (key word--->CONSISTENTLY) train 2 days a week. I turned 49 this February and am a regular working class 9-5'er. It adds up, you build a solid foundation and you get better slowly. I was promoted to brown belt this March and am able to competently roll with all my peers young and old . It feels good and this has definitely NOT been a waste of time. OSS

    I started out at 2 days a week, am currently doing 3 days + Open Mat. Once the kids are out for the summer I will be doing 5 sessions a week + Open mat as well as some private lessons. Trying to get ready for Master Worlds in Vegas!!!! It is all about what works for you and what you can make work.

    2x a week is my minimum goal. There have only been a few weeks here and there (not counting c19 close down or personal emergency absences) where I have not been able to do at least 2x a week. The most I've done is 4x in a week, sometimes that is 3x classes, and 1x open mat somewhere. I think 2x class and 1x open mat is a good groove for me now.

    I felt that way training in mma at first too when i frst started. I used to see some of the guys surpass me that started out around the same time as i did and it made me want to train even more to get to their level. then one day i realized something, they're doing it for competition reasons and i was doing it for mainly self defense reasons. so that's when i stopped trying to play catch up to them and started training at my own pace. there are people who train in martial arts for mainly workout reasons. there are people who train in martial arts for mainly self defense reason and then there are people who train in martial arts for mainly competitive reasons. you have to decide what reasons you're training in martial arts for and just go with it, and don't worry about what anyone else is doing, because they could be training for entirely diff reasons than you are.

    On the flip side, I tried to be that guy who worked 60 hours a week, and still tried to get four or five 2-hour sessions of jiu-jitsu in every week on top of lifting. Do not do this. Jiu-Jitsu is complicated. A person needs time to absorb the technique. Now I would much rather do 2 sessions a week. At practice, make sure that you spend plenty of time drilling so that you can perform techniques like a math problem in your head (instead of counting on your fingers), and get quality feedback from others after rolling with them.

    ​@@conor-_C Well I would assume he gets to go home and isn't forced to live at his workplace 24 hours a day. All of those activities take like an hour to complete, unless you hit weights for longer than that for some reason.

    I've got a family and full time job. Getting to the gym 2 nights a week is even pushing it sometimes! I've been at it since last September and grateful that I've got a supportive Wife.     Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and Boxing are a great combination. If you want to be better prepared for the street you got to have a stand-up/ striking game and a ground game. Nice work.

    @@13buthead people usually don't kick in street fights, if they do is pretty messy, I wouldn't go for a muay thai stance. just make sure to be preparef for takedowns

    I've been training 2x/week for about 9 months now, and I do it along with my other interests (family, boxing, krav maga). I've definitely noticed a difference from where I was when I started. The key is consistency and making it a regular part of your schedule. Agree with Chewy- it's your own path. Don't get discouraged, just focus on your own goals.

    I am guessing Chewy is a super high level grappling machine lol . I have trained years in KRAV and MT and find it better for self-defense than rolling around on the ground in guard or half guard

    My favorite thing is when I go in with MY two days a week and bust my ass while I see my peers who are there 3-5 times a week on their phones dickin around. Its about the intensity and dedication to your workouts rather than how much you walk into the building

    @@HansFlamme I train Krav Maga (full contact) twice a week and BJJ twice a week. It uses different muscle groups although complimentary. The abs came in fast and I rest the muscle groups enough by alternating. BJJ to deal with stuff on the ground (as often fights can wind up on the ground) and Krav for striking. I will probably eventually add more muay thai to my plate, but right now I am trying to focus on getting as good as I can. My main goal is self defense as a primary and fitness as a secondary, though eventually I may want to do BJJ competitions as I become more proficient at which time I'll dial it up. -Cory

    Even if you only train a little bit. At the end of the day you are gaining a skill. I haven't competed in jiu jitsu in 10 years and I still remember the fundamentals and it has gotten me out of a few bad situations.

    that must be nice I swear I go freaking months feeling like nothing improved then I have like grappling epiphanies where I seem to have gotten cnosiderablly better in multiple aspects of the game and it isn't just a good performance I stay at that level.....it's months and months of frustration and then like a party when I have gotten to the next level. I imagine this is somewhat similar to saving for retirement

    Isn't BJJ like an incredible fighting skill because all fights end up on the ground, and if you know BJJ you can win those fights? And even a low level of experience (one or two years of twice a week training) is a big skill to be learning.

    DUDE, awesome video. Just subscribed. This is exactly what I’ve been wondering. Started BJJ six months ago and just decided to commit mentally and go for it. Training two days a week and I was wondering if it’s enough. I love my downtime and try to watch 1 BJJ “how-to” video each day at lunch, then I come back to train refreshed and ready to go.     Great stuff! What worked for me over the years is find a solid/reliable training partner that you can work with outside of class (weekend mornings worked for me), buy some nice mats (or even inexpensive 3/4" foam mats) and review/drill material from classes (if just starting out take detailed notes to help review). It will pay huge dividends.

    Holy shit. This is so me. Just started yesterday. Got my ass kicked and loved it. Stayed after for about an hour and learned even more. Going back Thursday.
