I just need to say: It's so fricking amazing for me, as a guy who does judo for 13 years now, to see one of my most inspiring persons on yt to train this sport in legendary Japan. Like it does not even feel real, to see you succed on this journey, that could easily be 100 years old. I wish you good luck over there and keep on beeing such a humble person.

Veey happy for you. it was my dream to go to college in Tokyo, attend the Kodokan and win the Olympics in the late 70s. instead i joined a great rock band and resigned myself to teaching. All my Judo came to an end in 2008 when it became apparent my injuries and surgeries wouldn't allow Judo anymore. i am extremely glad you are living this life and have become such a good ambassador for Judo.

If you are stayig in the Kansai Region there are some places you have to visit. NIJOJO (Nijo Castle) in Kyoto. FUSHIMI INARI (I used to train running up tho se steps 20 years ago.) If the cherry blossoms are still in bloom walk The Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto. Osaka has some of the best food and nightlife around Umeda and Nipponbashi, but don't overdo it!

How were you able to gain entry to the country? I saw that Japan still has tourists barred from entering the country. I tried to set up a training stay at the Kodokan in Tokyo but was advised they could not accept me because the COVID travel ban on tourism was still in effect. Are you there on business travel, foreign student, or as an academic? If you do not want to answer these on the board, please message me with the information as to how you made this trip possible.

Going to Kodokan, moving up in the world, 😉. I remember something about a fellow saying Westerners were used for Uke quite a lot long ago, around start of 20th century and before.. Where there was a resentment of some sort against Westerners. Surely it isn't like such now. Where it's definitely been transformed into an art as karate and a sport, where the Jutsu was lost or only a few knowing such. Stands to reason, as there are those that only desire to fight, be bad, low character who might be bent toward being better but could still retain what they were.

Unfortunately there is a lot of racism in Japan, just like anywhere else in the world. Even today they are still a very homogeneous society. And there is yet another rebirth, in some quarters, of nationalism. Respect is always earned.

Rorion Gracie said they were teaching Japanese their own style to them. Which figure, the rigors of training, vs. factory work that arose after WWII, as well as academia needed for society, many probably had skills that died with them, same with Daitoryu. Which while you is there, it'd be interesting if you could visit a Daitoryu school.😉
