I love how you point out the good things the owner does while gently explaining how he can improve his handling. So many trainers I watch spend a lot of time correcting the owner instead of supporting and encouraging them the way you do. To me that shows you are self confident, knowledgeable and in the moment. You are a great example of what I wish more people could understand. Your techniques apply to life just as much as dog training.

That dog was an angel even BEFORE the training. My 18 week GSD/dutchie puppy is pulling like a malamute!

Get a prong collar, slip lead, Halti.. Will work wonders.

To think there’s people who think this man’s training is unsound or abusive in any way blow my fricking mind….. This is ART people. The Picasso of dog communication, understanding & psychology. Behold and be awed.

I’m in the UK and am subscribed to Robert’s channel. I have a Malinois who has just turned 1 and what a dog this is. I grew up with GSD’s and a Mali is on another level, so intelligent and such a willing learner. On a walk this morning another dog was heading our way and our dog was watching and ready to go and whoosh she’s gone, one whistle and she’s back at my feet sitting. Top dog and totally amazing. But, these are not dogs to think it’s just gonna sit still and lay there all day long, they need plenty of stimulation.

I made using only right turns, but Google Maps had a hard time keeping up with all the rerouting. At one point the app asked “Are you even listening to me?“

Very nice! Excellent. I make it an end goal to always "loose" leash walk with the dogs while they check in every now and then. Thank you Robert. You are a pleasure to watch.

I love the diagnosis of mistakes and ways to address them. Thank you. This is an invaluable video.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Of all the canine education channels yours is by far the most under rated. Clear information while explaining not just what to do but WHY you do it and how to do it in a way that maximizes the dogs success rate to keep things as fair as possible. There are plenty of gifted trainers that use the similar methods but are poor at communicating why. Then worse there are so many trainers that harshly "correct" their dogs in way that's more punative than communicative. I want the dog to want to do it because they learned this new behavior is fun and rewarding. Not because they're afraid they'll get popped again if they don't. Love your work and I greatly appreciate the podcasts too! Keep it up! This is the sort of information the dog world needs.

Hi Robert! Greetings from Greece! I just bought a prong collar 2.25mm and I am training my 11 months old female malinois according to your videos with Max. I also bought the fur saver 3.0mm choke chain. What type of training does this type of collar needs other than correcting on a long line when the dog is far away and gradually decrease the distance? Just came across this vid and u answered one question i couldn’t find in other vids.. i teaching my dog focused heeling and i always wondered if i can teach him a normal heel(everyday walking outside) and u said that it is possible. I thought its only one or the other so thank u!

I'm struggling with leash waling and the ff method I learned hasn't been helping. I want to find a good balanced trainer in my area to help me improve the walk and show me the most appropriate collar/training tool for her. These tips are so much better than what I was taught. I'll practice this. my leash is 6 feet.

You make it look so easy! :) I have 2 Great Pyrenees. Not sure if ill ever get them that focused! At least my boy doesn’t pull on the leash anymore. Getting a Mal puppy next month. He’ll probably be easier in some things.

What to do when dog freezes and won't move?

Hi Robert, just subscribed. I'm 57, I grew up with dogs cats and horses. After leaving home I didn't have a 'pet' for 15 years until my girlfriend->wife's dog 'momo' who passed away at 16, ten years ago now, soon after we had our first child. We will probably get a Shiba-inu from a shelter (to start), but I have had my heart set on a Malinois ever since I met one (very rare here in Japan) a few years ago. Your videos have been invaluable, and I am starting to think Beauceron or Tervuren rather than Malinois, but here in Japan they are so rare it's going to be hard to find a good match.

Any advice on leash pulling for a hunting dog (Bracco Italiano)? He's always sniffing around, nose on the ground. So whenever you correct him or walk another direction, he just puts his nose on the ground and starts pulling and sniffing in that other direction. The dog trainers at our dog classes have tried many times and gave us lots of tips ... but non of them have worked so far (not even when he's walking with the trainers). So any other advice is more than welcome.

My 5 month old boxer is amazing on the walks, I use a sl ip lead and try not to overwhelm her. I have started to bring her into the city for socialization, and I noticed her getting more distracted. Should I move up to a prong ? Is she too young? She understands leash pressure, so I don't think the prong would be too much of a change. I have used prongs in the past, but the dogs were way older. Thanks

Love your training because it is so BALANCED. U are unique among all the trainers on Utube. Question: what if I have a small dog that wears harness (not collar) and she doesn't care about corrections. I correct her she comes then the same 2sec after... she is just "ok you pull I come, then I go off again". I did the same for whole 20min..didnt get the point. I also tried stopping...turning the other way..the same thing repeats to other direction

I’d consider a firmer correction and more praise when she does it right. Work her between pleasure and discomfort. Reward abundantly for doing the right thing. Short, firm correction for disobedience.

Get rid of the harness. It gives the dog the advantage. Harnesses are for people that aren't willing to train their dog to heel and walk on as leash.

What type of collar is Ziggy wearing in this video? Also, I very much like your training vest do you sell them?

Can I re-train my 14 month mali from preassure walking to loose leash? Or is it too late to fix this 😥

I bounce a tennis ball when I want a dog to focus on me. I stop when a dog pulls. That lead has to be loose before i will move. I go over simple tricks during a distraction to make it fun.

Robert, that seems like a gentle Koehler turn about choke chain correction.

My 7 week old Malinois puppy bites a lot, and I’m trying to train him but his mind is just on bite bite bite, I play with him for sometimes 4 hours a day, trying to redirect him to toys, but his schedule is sleep, pee poop, bite eat, is it’s hard to do training exercises when the only time he is awake he’s trying to bite my hands.

I keep saying no and increase pressure before, I will try your way tomorrow

You need to spend time training and keeping the dog engaged. But there are ways. You may need a friend to help out. But it will be tough. The other 16 hours will be very full.

No prong needed just training to walk at a heel, like he said the dogs not stupid, and yes all dogs are different some may benefit from one but you can see he doesn't have one on

This is not helpful to me. My dog pulls like crazy from the moment we are out of the house. And doesn't pay attention to me. Is tyere a video somewhere about dealing with easily distractable fog? Ziggy is very well behaved, mine is not

I think the vest is the hidden secret we are all looking for

I've been trying loose leash walking with this technique but every bit of progress I make with our 8 month doodle goes out the window when my husband takes her out (in fact the dog takes my husband out, she's a very zoned out puller). The same goes for recall and getting overly excited meeting other dogs. I keep trying to explain to him he needs to stop rewarding the pup for total disobedience but he just says he wants the dog to enjoy being out, then I say let her enjoy outside on your terms, but he never does, it's been exhausting training my puppy but I will never give up coz she's very precious and I know we will get there, currently limiting the amount of walks my husband gets taking the dog out 😁

yea so this wont work.. i know from experience unfortunaly... you need to teach your husband the ropes. show him these vids and try to explain clearly why or what to him. She is 8 months now, try to have your husband involved as soon as possible. i hope he will understand!

@@WitchOnABroomstick she's just over 10 months now and things have improved a lot, great improvement on recall but still a lot of pulling, I've explained things to my husband and asked for his full cooperation, he's struggling but I still take most of the responsibilities training out puppy, things are definitely getting better 👍🙂

@@adunzoroq33 ohh thats great to hear Agun! Im happy you were able to kind of push him down the line haha. and i think its certainly better for you to train the puppy indeed.. You know, you might wanna train her with 'Foodtraining'. Training a hungry dog is best! I do it now with my 14 month malinois, we are at the very beginning. For pulling (mine is also lunging attacking barking and biting) i use a Halti Halter, she is unable to use her body weight against me to pull. this way you might can teach her to walk next to you (I do see improvement!) I rescued this dog and she's with me for only 6 days, unfortunaly she has never been socialized so im having alot of work on her..

Husband is an idiot. Sorry. If the dogs pulling for others... The training isn't effective. At 10 months.. you should be well past simple heeling and walking on a leash.

The dogs that I see in most of the videos are not pulling at all, I literally don’t feel my fingers from holding my dog

I call this the seeing eye human. People do this with horses too. They don’t give the animal the skill and responsibility of focus and it negatively affects other aspects of their life together.

So my dog is 2 and he pulls so hard that I can barely handle him. One time he pulled so hard he flipped me. I currently use a vest to walk. Should I use something else. I really need help with this.

I'm a long time dog walker. If there's anything I've learned about this subject. Get a dog that is 1. high on the intelligence list scale and/or 2. get a dog that is smaller than the average dog. 3. use a Martingale or prong type collar.

When my dog knows we are Walking to the park to run, he pulls so hard wanting to get there quickly

Correct. Firmly. Done properly you should only have to do it 2-3 times max.

It looks like the dog (and a smart one here) waits for/expects clear directions... that never come firmly and unequivocally.

Training the handler is the hardest part

I appreciate the video and the information, BUTTTTTTTT, I have seen this behavior before, the owner is not getting the attention/ closeness that the instructor is obtaining. Dog treats in jacket left pocket would be my guess or this pup has done this prior with this instructor.

What do you do with a Mal who thinks the leash is for tugging! It doesn’t matter where it’s connected on her halter or collar, as soon as she get ahold of it, it’s tug of war! I have stopped walking, and ignored her attempts to play, but she just keeps at it as if She is playing alone. I have tried correcting with firm “no”, I have grabbed the halter and lifted her up to see if she will drop it. Nothing seems to work! It really makes training hard because she is also a runner. I might also add, she was adopted from the shelter and they tell me she is a yr old. Not positive on her age, she still has a lot of gator to her Mal.

What I do when my 2 Malinois do this is I start running, they will immediately let go and run with me or actually in front of me trying to stop me from running away. 🤷‍♂️ it seems to work. The weird thing is that they only do this when we go through a crosswalk, I have no idea why.

If you’re holding the leash, she’s not playing alone! Try using 2 leashes - when she grabs the leash, just take hold of the other leash and let go of one she’s tugging (with you). Do this quietly and calmly. Also, teaching a calm “let go” behavior will help, but I wouldn’t rely on just that or you’ll be constantly telling her to let go let go. Also, teach her that tug happens with specific toys and never the leash; at home in a fenced yard for safety, put the leash on, immediately present the tug toy and engage her on it. Pick up the leash while she’s tugging the toy. If she grabs the leash, immediately drop it and walk away. After a minute, repeat. Every time she grabs the leash, drop it so tug doesn’t happen, walk away briefly then re engage her with the toy.

Hi Robert, I am having the worst time with a 3 month old male Shiba Inu. I have NEVER had a pup that is such an aggressive nipper!!! I have tried everything in my arsenal, but nothing works!!! And, just yesterday, he started humping!!! I've also never seen a dog this young do that. Help a girl out?? Time is of the essence. Thanks

you're just saying don't put a pressure on the leash and thats ok. I already do not do that, my dog just starts running, jumping outta nowhere. Doesnt really matter if u put a pressure or not. This was not really useful

The owner is constantly checking on the Dog, looking down to see where the Dog is. He should be head up and chest out, the Dog should be going on the owner's walk not the other way around.

listen... I've been nice ignoring you up to now, mainly because I feel sorry for you. The irony, a person who has a "wolf hybrid" talking about abuse! SERIOUSLY, anyone who knows anything about behavior or kindness to animals would NEVER breed a wolf and a dog. Your dog is not a wolf... and you are not a trainer.

Sry but this video is kinda pointless. Or at least far from what the title suggests. We're dealing with a well trained well behaving dog that already knows heel. You can't start up with a dog and expect him to be like that just cause you put no pressure on the leash
