25mph is because that's the preservation railway speed limit which is at every steam railway! Great video! Love to see more of steam loco videos and TS.2016 :)

It's not actually that hot in the cab. You normally have a flap that you can lift up over the entrance to the firebox so the heat is contained. On these preservation railways - or certainly the one I work on - you don't have to shovel coal too often so therefore it doesn't get too hot. Loving the videos Paul. Keep them up.

I agree, we need a rail network in TS. Just running a single line starts to be a bore to me.

I'm a volunteer on the Severn valley railway and I repair locos and stuff like that, last week I dressed up on the Santa specials, I've been doing it for 2 years now and hopefully one day I will become a driver, I've already had a footplate experience and helped shunting trucks in an 08 shunter btw I loved the video

I know this is three years old now, but three years ago I had never even heard of Train Simulator. You've probably figured it out by now, but I'll say it anyway: You don't need to let the brakes do all the work when heading downhill. I'm playing the Old West trains right now, and I don't even have a brake! Judicious use of the whistle will tell the brakemen when to apply and release. To control the speed close the regulator (throttle) and coast. After a minute or so you can reverse to whatever setting works for you. Bring the regulator back up to whatever setting works for you and use that to control your downhill speed. Great video, by the way.

Great video Paul. FYI all heritage railways in England have a speed limit of 25mph imposed on them so that they can run under a light railway order. A light railway order allows them to run without modern safety equipment, i.e. locked doors etc.

Just a couple helpful hints: Bishops Lydeard is pronounced Bih-shups Lid-e-yard. (Stress yard) 25m/h maximum is because it is a preserved railway under light railway order which allows a maximum of 25 or sometimes 30 unless special permission is granted for TPO runs or it's the GCR. The loco has a driver who runs the loco, a fireman (on the left for GWR) who manages the pressure (water and coal) and on the mainline or visiting locos a 3rd member, the traction inspector. The inspector makes sure no safety violations are occurring and if anything does happy, he records it. Privately owned locos have an owners rep too.

Squirrel, the reason the line is so slow is that heritage railways are restricted to operate at 25 miles per hour. The only circumstance I know of that it can be increased is for railways that have an AWS system of some kind.

Would be nice to see larger areas of train routes in Europe, Canada and US. But, with so much detail that they put into the scenery, maybe the files would be way too large or PC's would require a lot more resources. Flight Sims. and Truck Sims utilize a lot more generic ground features, so they can get by with large maps of a country or the world. I know technology is changing, who knows what's ahead in the next couple of years. I'm 66 YO and only hope to see it keep developing.

The brakes are vacuum brakes, meaning that the brakes are held off by the vacuum pressure. A leak anywhere in the system will automatically apply the brakes making this a fail safe system. The pressure gauge indicates the pressure in the brake cylinder. The lower the indicated pressure the harder the brakes are applied.

Squirrel old chap. You're having trouble controlling your speed down hill because your reverser is set way too high. Too much steam going to the cylinders mate. with the throttle at zero use the reverser to control the speed. Much easier than trying to correcting "balance" of the brakes.

Not on a real steam locomotive. If it's an accurate re-creation, it will inhail gasses from the smoke box then compress it on the exhaust stroke if the engine is running opposite of what the reverse lever is positioned. If this is not an accurate re-creation then just give it a tiny bit of throttle.

You do know that you can actually use the reverser for braking, right? If you put it into "reverse" the steam will act the opposite way against the cycling and slow down the wheel revolution. Also, if you're curious, there is this rather awesome training video on how to become a steam driver in the good old days: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4d5y8Wpocfbnaw.html
