good trip report Prague is a beautiful city with historic architecture and the old railway station is miles better than the newer one i like that there was a joint operation between CD and Alex also rather strange that the Alex portion of the train had a modern double decker carriage alongside old single decker coaches probably 40 to 50 years or so older but at least you have the big windows on those as for the Czech coaches i like the seating moquette on them and also nice views out of the window hopefully this year travel will be possible

There is actually another, more scenic way to travel between Munich and Prague. But you’ll have to change twice. You’ll first take the Regionalexpress which runs from Munich to Passau. You’ll change at Plattling. There you’ll take a train run by the “Waldbahn”(actually belonging to the same parent company as Alex). You’ll take the train to Bayerisch Eisenstein/Železná Ruda-Alžbetín (which is the only station in Europe which lies directly on a border). There you’ll change onto a ČD train to Prague. It actually only is around 20 minutes slower than the direct Alex train. But you’ll get to see wonderful views of the Bavarian/Bohemian Forest national park along the way.

Also sounds really interesting. Parts of these lines are in my list to make a video about as well. In general I try to make videos on routes where I show the train as a competitor of the plane, and due to not enough time I could only do this route. But I will definitely be back in this part of Germany (we'll Germany in general) and the Czech Republic.

@@Trainviking Currently there is only one train in CZ that really competes with an airplane and a car, it is the Pendolino between Prague and Ostrava. The journey is 3 hours for 350 kms thanks to the tilting mechanism (resulting in almost constant 160 km/h). I really recommend this train, 2nd class is good enough, bistro car with Pilsner Urquell onboard. 👍

I took this train in 2019 in the early morning, and back then, between Prague and Pilsen, there was also a (very) old-fashioned Czech car attached to it. I think it was an 8 seat-compartment.

An 8 seat compatment, who that's tight. On other trains on this route I also only saw these Czech coaches. Actually I've never been on a train with 8 people compartments, would be interesting to see though.

@@Trainviking I actually meant these compartments. www.vagonweb.cz/fotogalerie/CZ/CD_B.php Pretty tight indeed, but I was one of the few passengers in that car, so not much of a problem for me, luckily.

This train used to stop in my hometown about 30 km westwards from Praguey, too, but, since it is a town served by two suburban lines (of the so-called Esko Prague system which mainly consists of true suburban lines on which trains stop in every station, however, "fast trains" (marked by the letter R for "rychlík", similar to the D-Zug category that used to exist in Germany) can be used, too, within the system, in which the ticket is about 30 % cheaper). Even these alex expresses to Munich used to be included in the suburban railway system, while running within the Central Bohemian region. In bigger stations (usually they're "capitals" of counties and the most important S-lines end there), the R trains are a preferred category, since they usually don't stop anywhere between the county capital and Prague. If I take an R train, my journey to Prague is about 10 minutes shorter (let alone the fact it feels faster). Anyways, this is the reason why ČD sometimes add very old carriages so that there's more space for commuters. Travelers who have a seat reservation (which is free if one books online) are never seated in these very old carriages. Us, commuters, rarely book a seat (it's possible but who wants to buy a ticket every morning...), since it would cost more (not that one can't book a seat on suburban lines - on the electrified lines (the busiest ones), the EMUs serving these even have a nice 1st class section, shall anyone wish to travel absolutely alone and sit in a more comfortable seat with a nice table during peak hours... By the way, conductors make sure those without a 1st class ticket don't sit there). Besides, most commuters are Czech and for the 30 or 40 minute journey, we really don't mind the old carriages. Czechs always look for an empty compartment, so if commuters see an old carriage, they'll choose that one. For us, it's a matter of nostalgia, too. TLDR: I believe it was the time of day that caused the attachment of such a carriage. Commuters from "capitals" of counties around Prague prefer "fast" trains to the classic suburban lines.

Thank you very much for this interesting train ride review. I will make the trip from Regensburg (arriving from Bonn by ICE) to Prague this September so I'm excited for my journey. A few comments on Prague Main Station which I take from various Prague Guides KZread channels and personal experience from friends: Do not linger in the park in front of the station. If you just keep walking through, you will most likely not be bothered by anyone. Otherwise, you might, especially in the evenings and at night. Do not support the use of electric scooters. They are a nuisance to visitors and residents of Prague alike and often end up discarded, even in the river Vltava. You don't need them: Public transport in Prague with trams, metro, busses, ferries and the funicular is safe, clean, cheap and easy to use. Also: Riding them on the cobblestone streets of Old Town Prague is simply stupid. For a similar reason, do not take taxis from a roadstop anywhere in Prague. Many drivers will overcharge you at the end of the ride and it's much cheaper to use public transport anyway. Regarding the Alex ride: I bought a first class return ticket from Bonn to Prague months ahead of time which makes it rather cheap. It's worth it for the ICE part from Bonn to Regensburg alone. Interesting to see the Alex 1st class part, though! Will get back here to report afterwards.

I guess the park is fine ideed, as long as you just walk through it. Don't hang around indeed. Electric scooters, I do have a very mixed relationship with those, for the same reason as you're mentioning however they can be a handy way of transportation every now and than however, when peolle don't use it properly, than it's a no go. I guess in my 2nd video where I featured Prague I mentioned some of the items you bring on here. About ticket prices, it's really good to know that DB and CD have their own fares.(I guess I mentioned something like this as well right?). The general rule for train tickets is, the earlier you book the beter promotions you can get (not in all countries and all routes though, however last-minute is always the full price).

I also suggest the e-motobike sharing services co-created by Skoda called BeRider and the 3 main carsharing companies in Prague will lots and lots of cars around called GoGree and AnyTime as well as Carwway but the last one will have you pick up some NFC card at the station first with the first two all is done via the App including unlocking and locking the car. Car sharing allows your to park anywhere in the city including blue zones and purple zones... Taxi services are available but I seem tonotice many are using Bolt to order cars too... And good news... the old building is being beautifully fixed for so many years now and nearing completion.. The old grand waiting rooms and halls will be open and hopefully the st class lounges will be there as well + that parking across the old hall and above the new part will become a park.. The parking will disappear and trees will reintroduced. The main park infront of the station will be regenerated and the trams from the Museum will come infront of the station modern facade and connect to the station that you showed in your video... The whole area will finally be more fixed tahn it is now...

I think a remake would be good. It's really nice to have some green space in the city though. I didn't found the homeless people disturbing to me and this is also what I hear from other people. However for some people it might be out of their comfort zone, so therefore I have to say this. I want my video's to be open and honest.

@@Trainviking Try to stay there for a few minutes, someone will surely come to you and begging money, alcohol, cigarettes or something even worse. Also there are plenty of annoying charity people who bother you with some tips, which is not bad, I am not against that, but you are mostly waiting for train there and you need to go in time and it's hard to get rid of them when you need to go. But it's much better than it was in the past.

3:00 we call this park Sherwood, you must be careful there, but it's much better than in the past, since terrorist attacks in Europe, they started more guard such places so there is always some policeman near to you. It's really sad that communists destroyed main train station by stupid highway, it's hard to solve that now, there are many projects how to remove highway, but nothing is really getting to reality.

Oh really? I didn't noticed that, maybe I feel safe easily because I'm a big guy and I was here only during day time. I know taxi scams and money exchange scams are a bigger issue in Prague. No matter how you look at it, Prague is a lovely town. There will be some more videos in the Czech Republic by the way, because I don't want to stress out on creating new content I don't upload all at one single go but there will be 3 more videos in, from and to Czechia. One thing i noticed while on the train, the country is way nicer than I thought at first, so I'll be back (but probably other places than Praga).
