The General is another Buster Keaton classic- he was among the original "superstars". 🚬😎
Thank you so much for passing on this heritage treasure to this generation 🙏🙏
Nothing beats old tv, sigh.
That was great! Love seeing that old stuff! Nice pick Shoestring! Thanks for update and short movie. B Safe......

Here from shoestring as well!
Those were some very interesting clips from 97 years ago! I live near Cottage Grove, OR where the General was filmed in '27' and we also live in the same hotel he stayed at during filming.

I don't know much about trains except for what I've learned from you shoestring. But I can tell you that I like the film it was so funny it made my day. Thanks for sharing! 🤩👍

Yep, a Shoestring recommendation. Complete with hobo.
It's 1830 in this movie railroads didn't run from new York to Kentucky until years later
Man that's neat!! Sure happy you posted that one.👍👍🚂🚂
Thanks! Finding clips like this one restores my faith in modern technology.
Keaton loved trains and had the recreation of the Stephenson's Rocket created just for this film as well as nearly a mile of rickety track.

@@chevyblue10 True, there were variations on this design in use for several years although the track, which could be bad was never as bad as shown in that movie. The track in the movie was constructed to enhance the comedy.

@@chevyblue10 and yes, many of the early trains simply used stage coach bodies for the passenger cars.
Somewhere I read where the tender actually had a Model T engine that powered the train.
I'm seeing this 2023. This happens 100 years before wow.. an century
Thank you so much uploading the video and a great pain for human to reach out to modern technology but very few people who appreciate the hard work human being suffering
Was pretty nice replica of the Rocket. Altho the carriages are missing the brakes on the wheels. The whole purpose of the folks sitting on top sides of the carriages are the brakes men. On early trains they had to pull the brakes levers simultaneously to apply the brake shoe on the wheels. This was used for a while until the hose interconnection and steam (later compressed air) brakes were invented, and brakes men were no longer needed on each car.
@phil6506

I always thought they were vacuum brakes not compressed air.
Look at them oil them old style “Friction Bearings”. Hard to believe you can now find most rail cars and engine parts use Roller Bearings now.
I love every bit of it
Who knew they were making flex track back then!
Shoestring sent me here
Some good parts were cut from this. I wouldn't fool with a film by Buster Keaton, a master.

has ANYBODY noticed a ''movie mistake'' at 5:20 on (deformed rails, but the train passing as if it were straight, a stone hindering the view; when the donkey is finally gone, the rails are, of course, straight)

incredible
I feel like a small portion of this film was actually used on a logging narrow gauge railroad. Look at how well the track is ballasted in 2:56. Just that portion alone.

The copy of rocket used in this film was lost. It is not known whether it was actually powered. But looking at the film I think not. The rails is not constructed well enough to hold the weight of a real loco. And the stunts on the uneven rails are way to dangerous with a real pressurized boiler. I think its a light mock up. Thats pushed or pulled just out of frame. Some other shots are made by having the whole train run down hill. Im not sure of course. But we know they where masters of the pratical effects. Especially Keaton.
👍👍👍great !

I'm 100th comment 😀
It's unfortunate that this wasn't uploaded in its original aspect ratio. It looks terrible stretched out like this.
5:20 they are fooling the spectators ... the rails have been deformed and actually made impassable, a bit later the train is travelling smoothly and the rails that are (again?!) straight, but hidden from view by a large boulder
👍👏😄😆

One should not complain that Vande Bharat is stoned. It's from history book that trains are meant for that practice. See this video as proof.

Perjuangan kereta api jadul. Kebodohan yg terulang.
