Train Appears Out Of Tunnel Then Train Disappears Into Railroad Tunnel! + Abandoned Railroad Tunnel!

Ойын-сауық

2 Railroad Tunnels & 2 Trains! Norfolk Southern Led Train Appears Out Of CSX Tunnel Next To Abandoned Railroad Tunnel! See How High Rail Trucks Get Off Of Railroad Crossings. These trains are in Kentucky at Lambs Ferry Tunnels near Ryland, Kentucky on the old L&N line that runs between Cincinnati Queens Gate Yard and Corbin, Kentucky. Railroad maintenance of way equipment was near here and I saw several high rail trucks pass. I found out that northbound and southbound freight trains were coming so I decided to watch them appear and disappear into the railroad tunnel. One of the tunnels is out of service and hasn't seen a train in a long time. We see the rusty rails up close. I was here last year and the same track was very rusty and the tunnel out of service at that time. I have no idea why they don't use the tunnel anymore. Please leave a comment if you know. I do know that this line doesn't have the volume of trains that it use to have. First we see the high rail truck raise the wheels and exit the track at the railroad crossing. Then we see a CSX ethanol train come out of the tunnel being led by Norfolk Southern locomotives. That was cool! You don't normally see Norfolk Southern locomotives leading trains on this line. Then a short time later a CSX manifest goes through the tunnel on its way north to Queens Gate Yard. That train was pretty interesting because it had empty continuous welded rail ( CWR ) cars hooked on the rear of the train. I have seen quite a few CWR trains in the past year in Kentucky and Ohio. Trains on this line use the old L&N road channel of 161.370 to call out the signals. 452.9375 is advised for EOT.
Update: Shortly after I filmed this the rusty track on the right side, the eastern most track, was removed. The track was left inside the tunnel but the rest of Main 2 was pulled up. I found out by a commenter that the tunnel on the west side was built in 1853 and the tunnel on the east side, the right side, was built in 1912.
This video was filmed in 4K , June 2022.
Don't forget about Chessie and Norfie at the end of the video and please leave a comment!

Thank you for documenting these two trains at Lambs Ferry Tunnels near Ryland, Kentucky and also the high rail truck getting off the tracks. The tunnels were a interesting to see. I would think that the one tunnel probably needs some repairs that the CSX does not want to pay for. With the reduction in use of this line, only one tunnel is needed. That was neat to see the high rail truck getting off the tracks. The northbound mixed freight with the continuous weld rail cars on the end was an interesting train. The smell of the honeysuckle must have been a better smell than the fumes from the diesel locomotives.

I went back and found an old JawTooth video from 2015 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6aJz8WYnNW5eLQ.html) that showed a train going into the now out of service tunnel. Just looking at the fit of the engines compared to the engines on this train, it is clear that the other tunnel is lower. Probably too small for over height cars like autoracks and double stacks.

3:08 The left tunnel is definitely higher - and looking at the reinforced lower part of the tunnel wall (with, ahem, the naughty grafitti on it) I wonder if the clearance has been increased at some point by digging out the tunnel floor. The track appears to be slightly lower than the one in the disused tunnel.

The tunnel on the right is probable out of service because it can't handle double stacks. This looks like a nice scene to model.

ChainsawN&W1218, it's always nice to cool 😎 down drink some Gatorade & water after a hot day of filming trains, the tunnel that was active was definitely tall enough to get double stacks through, the one closed down looks like it needed to be notched if reopened.

🎶Señor Jaws. You may have never tried this. Works well with the tunnel action. Put on a slow backing track, Em or Am (Mi menor, La menor, if you use that notation), then jam in the minor pentatonic scale of your choice. Goes great for some reason with tunnels. I got a Martin 6-string acoustic-electric, but no amp at present. You should try it on your electric guitar. Probably even better sounding. Who woulda known? Gracias por tu video. I think problem with the tunnel on the right is clearance for double stack trains. There seems to be quite a notable difference in height between the two.

Of course we all know this but for those that don’t, if you see one or two units or all units leading and they all have the A end forward then you know a DPU is coming with the B end forward.

Nice new engine on the lead of the first train, missed a golden opportunity to ask the guy in the Hi-Raider as to why that tunnel is closed
