Trailer ABS Light - What does it mean?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Why is my ABS light on? Or why is the ABS light off? Or why does it come on and off?
It is actually really simple to read your ABS system. You just need to know what it is trying to tell you. In this video we cover everything about semi truck trailer ABS lights and what they mean.
Chapters:
1:06 Good working ABS Light
1:45 Light never comes on
2:11 Light is always on
2:43 Light comes on when I hit my brakes
3:16 Light is on in the dash
Here is a link to a video to troubleshoot and find your ABS codes:

Appreciate the video my brother ❤
Thanks very helpful 👍
Your trailer ABS system should have constant power through the 7way. If your trailer ABS light comes on each time you apply the brakes you may have a blown Trailer ABS fuse on the truck.
Thanks for sharing
Smart content, thnx
Thanks a lot!
I did not learn a damn thing 😂 my light is on on the dash and on my trailer
i cant find a definitive answer. when doing a VTI before a run or just a yard jockey move inside the yard . if the ABS light fails to turn on briefly. is that considered a defect or no? or is it only a defect if the ABS light stays lit? i feel like i have come across trailers where the light doesnt want to come on at all, and some are really sensitive and come on for a few seconds and goes off every time i tap the brakes (normal). I’m not entirely sure if my hostler tractor has the ABS feature when I turn the key’s off and on. Bottom line, I’m more concerned if I get inspected by DOT and it doesn’t light for them, if I’ll get in trouble for it or not.
What if you hit the brakes and the light doesn’t come on but it comes on and off when ignition is on is that still legal?
So I have a 2014 Utility Reefer trailer. I noticed that when I apply my brakes the abs light comes on and goes off when released. Is this normal? I am not getting ABS code on dash. When I turn the key on the abs light comes on the trailer for a few seconds. The ABS light on trailer is not coming on with key every time. Do you have any suggestions for trouble shooting? Thank you
so what would the problem be yes my tractor abs system is working fine no lights on the dash . I just got the truck and put new lines on the back when I went to hook up to a trailer all the lights turned on expect for the Trailer ABS All the fuses are okay , the new lines work hooked it up to another truck and it worked for the abs light . So from the plug back to the truck is my problem I just don’t know where else to look after the looking at the fusees !
What if you hit the breaks and the abs light doesn't come on
They gave a driver violation in AZ yesterday for abs coming on for 5 seconds after applying brakes
Are some abs trailer lights red?
You didn’t add the code to troubleshoot or get code for when the light stays on and in the dash! It’s missing in the description .
My trailer abs literally is on and stays on but not on on the dash of the truck
Hi, on my utility trailer with Bendix abs, light stays on for duration of service brake pedal pressed and goes away when pedal relaesed, is it normal

We talked about that in the video, go to 2:50 in the video. But it is a good thing.
Is this freightliner specific? I normally drive a '19 International. Every time I do my inspection, I hit the brakes 3 times to make sure the ABS comes on the trailer. And they do, all the time. Parked, 5 mph, 65 mph, doesn't matter. That truck is in the shop. I have a Freightliner stand in, and this is how it's working. Which scared me because I was really thinking something was wrong. Ty for the video, but for real I'd really like to know if this is an industry/ fmcsa standard or if this is brand differences.

Yes there is some confusion on how it should respond when brakes are pushed across OEMs. I once dove in deep because I was worried we were having ABS issues and what I found is some of the OEMs don't build the trucks or trailers (because it can also be a trailer thing) so that they don't come on with the brakes all the time. Fortunately for DOT the only test they are supposed to do is with the key power coming on and that is industry standard across all OEMs.

@@DDTruckDriver really appreciate the thorough response and clarification! 👏 👍
My previous truck and trailer worked just like you described. I recently bought a used 2014 Freightliner Cascadia and a used 2007 Manac flatbed trailer. My truck by itself initially shows the ABS light during the self test when I turn the ignition on and then it goes off as it should. When connected to a trailer, I was supposed to see the trailer ABS light on the dashboard and the amber ABS at the back of the trailer but I don't see that. Whenever I press the brakes whether I am driving or stopped, the trailer ABS light on the dashboard and the amber light at the rear of the trailer come on for 3 seconds and go out. Is this the way it should be or is there something wrong?

yes that is completely normal. The light coming on for a couple seconds and then going off is it telling you it is working well.

@@DDTruckDriver Thank you for responding and confirming my thoughts. I figured there is nothing wrong with the ABS on both truck and trailer now. I still have an issue with the way it works though. The center pin of the connection is supposed to give constant power to the trailer ABS when the ignition is on so that it works the way you described it. The center pin has no power in my truck and the trailer ABS is poweres from the brake light. That is why everytime I press the brake pedal the trailer ABS lights up and goes out to tell me everything is fine. However, Wabco says the center pin must have power whenever the ignition is on and powering the ABS from the brake light like mine should only be a backup. Also, DOT officers require the amber light to come up and go off whenever the ignition is turned on. Otherwise they think it is not working at all. My truck has 2 connectors side by side. One is marked SAE J560b and the other ISO 3731. My trailer is connected to the SAE J560b which has no power in the center pin. The other connector is completely different and hard to understand and explain why it is there.

@@moethedeaf2746 oh yes there is your problem. Your abs power is in the yellow pigtail and not the normal one. You can buy a very expensive harness to swap that around or you can just find ABS power in that yellow line if you’re not using it and run a wire from that into your regular pigtail center pin

@@DDTruckDriver I was curious yesterday and took a multimeter to check the differences or similarities between the two connectors. SAE J560b worked just as I expected except that the center pin (pin #7) had no power at all. ISO 3731 completely buffled me. There was a 12V power in the center pin (pin #7) and there was almost 8V on the yellow pin (pin #3). I could not find anything else on the other pins as I hoped for. That dashed out my idea of using this connector instead of the SAE J560b. I thought about opening both connectors and running a wire between the 2 center pins but I was afraid I may burn the ABS ECU. So, I discarded that idea. I was wondering why there is this 8V on the yellow (pin #3) but as you pointed out, that is the trailer ABS. Why would Freightliner make this mess?

@@moethedeaf2746 Well it is more common than you think, those two connections are an industry standard item and not a freightliner item. The reason I know about those two connections is because of a Kenworth that was exactly the same way. When you order a truck with those two plugs it is assumed you will be using them and on very specific trailers that are set up to pull the power from those two separate lines. So it is something the industry uses in certain applications
my abs lights stay on in trailer and on dash and it's happened last 2 trailers i've had. not sure if i've had bad trailers or it's some communication issue. could replacing the fuse help? someone suggested replacing the green power cord and i did that but didnt help. any ideas

If the light flashes when breaking it mean trailer breaks need adjustment

I've never seen the lights flash when braking before. I also don't know how an air valve could detect that the brakes are out of adjustment? Is this a new feature?

If you cut the wire to the light it never comes on. Problem solved, you're welcome.
