This is the kind of video us handy DIY guys need when we feel stuck. Now I can use my volt meter tonight to verify voltage with steering input before I spend $100+ on a new sensor. Appreciate you taking the time out of your day to share this!!

This is why having guys like you sharing your knowledge on variables regarding software can really make our daily job that much easier, better, and more importantly, helping us do our best to fix the complaint the first time. It's EXTREMELY valuable to have that kind of stuff available to help keep us in the know...soooo..."giving away trade secrets"....um...nooooo...how about doing the right thing to help out fellow tech's out there become more knowledgeable, efficient, and accurate when it comes to our diagnostic process! Loved the step-by-step going down the line checking the signal integrity. Great video Keith!

Its one thing knowing how to use the computers, multimeters, scopes, etc. but its a whole other story knowing how its suppose to work. I've never heard of a stering wheel position sensor? If you don't know how something works and and every manufacturer has a different idea on how to make something function it can be a can of worms. You are one in a million with the skill and knowledge you have learned over the years. Most customers are going to pay with the 99% who can only change parts. Thanks

Triangle Diagnostics It definitely does , and I never know how I am going to do it or when. I was interrupted about 50 times while trying to make this one . Part of why the editing is so poor. At one point the shop owners head was between the camera and the tablet lol. So it was a little rushed needless to say. Glad you liked it ! And your videos are coming along great btw , keep up the good work

Fantastic job Kieth. Clear, concise and very well explained. Dorman crap is everywhere! they are the relabel kings! Fortunately at this point in time it was not the reason for the fault. I ounce had an 01 Audi A6 (when i was working at STS) that would keep coming back with a misfire because the coil pack was failing I think it was a Dorman i don't remember but it was crap. 3 times! i told the Service manager lets get an OEM coil, nope. But we did get a German made aftermarket part (northside imports in edison) that was a little more expensive and more a permanent fix than that crap that was installed the first 3 times. car never came back for that issue. BTW 99 maxima owner decided to just junk the car instead of fight with the shop that did the T-chains.

Excellent work and well documented procedure.

Great work Keith and nice diagnostic process. What seems like a simple process of separating the connector to isolate who's at fault, it's surprising that a lot of people wouldn't think of this. If you get the time when the module comes in, it would be nice to see the reprogramming of the module. It doesn't seem to be a lot of stuff out there for that. I do reprogramming at work, but it's pretty much for PLCs. Thanks again for shooting a video out of your busy schedule!!!

There's lots of books and videos out there Dexron3, but I couldn't say if they were any good or not and maybe a lot of them are outdated. I always say that if you're going to learn something such as PLC programming, sit down with the piece of equipment and play with it. Here's a few links to inexpensive PLCs where you can play with them and learn about programming. Great video Keith! I just diagnosed the same code last week on same vehicle. My problem was with the steering angle degrees it is the 5th wire over. With wheel turned all the way to the left I had .25 volts and as I turned the wheel it gradually went up till I got to 4.90volts and I was only about 75% of all the way to the right. I made about 1 more turn and it dropped to 0V and as I continued to turn I think it went up to maybe .10volts. I told the shop that he needs a new sensor, his reply was "That is a brand new sensor from GM". So I had to show him what the problem was before he believed me. This was last week and I haven't heard from him so I guess a new sensor cured the problem So there is 2 hall effect and a variable sensor all in one? Great bypass test I will have to remember that one

For anyone interested: The index pulse in a common digital incremental encoder (A+B+X) or position sensor is to provide a reference position by counting either direction from the Index. 1 phase (A) can tell you how far and how fast the encoder moves. 2 phases (A+B) can also tell if the sensor reverses rotation or direction. However, an A+B+Index sensor would have to be keyed to always match the steering wheel's true center and geared down to allow for more than one wheel rotation from center to either stop. In this case , the SAS module has 2 sensors. The digital pulse A+B side tells the brake controller the direction and velocity the steering wheel is turned while the other sensor must report the steering angle since the A+B side cannot provide absolute position. At 6:25 you can see the 3 lines for the other sensor in the SAS module and I suspect that the ABS module is ignoring one or more of those lines along with the A-Phase line so it can neither read the angle nor the velocity. Nice vid of something a bit different, Keith :)

Eddie you say that the sensor is not keyed but it does have a steering angle position measured in degrees. How is it calculated then? I diagnosed a sensor last week and fully turned to the left it read .25volt and about 75% it read 4.90volts then dropped to 0 the rest of the way til it his the stop it was about .10 volt. Do they have to be clocked to a certain position when replacing? I know the steering wheel needs to be locked in the center position to keep from breaking the clock spring is that also to calibrate the steering angle sensor? Thanks for the info on how it works

Good catch, John. I should have noted that I was referring to a general purpose rotary digital encoder. SAS modules should be clocked according to directions and the system reset/re-programmed as needed. In your case it sounds like you are measuring an analog sensor (variable resistor / potentiometer) that varies a 5v reference according to the angle. The voltage ramp should be smooth stop to stop if you have a full travel sensor. I've made corrections to my first comment and apologize for the confusion. I should avoid commenting while sleep walking in the future...

You are correct it is a variable resister, and the signal is smooth up til it get to about 75% then it drops to .10V. I have never personally changed one I just do diag work. I have looked at Mitchel and Alldata and I am unable to find anything on calibrating or reprogramming the sensor it basicly says remove and replace. I have the Verus and also do not see anything for the SAS only the YAW sensor. Thanks for the info

The Alldata you guys get in the US is soooo much better than the European version. The Euro one I subscibe to is basically factory manuals. A great tool to have but no where near as much of a guide as yours. Great job Keith.

One Auto the guy from AllData Europe told me their data base is just as good as US version before i subscribed.now that i'm a member they telling me will take 3 years to get there so sucks😭😭.Quite a few vehicle manufacturer not even exist in their system and certain model repair information very poor .I've tried many data base and none of them nowhere near as good as these guys use in US.Makes diagnosis so much easier having the right info, diagram and step by step guide. Wish i would live in US Greg

Keith, awesome video! I had just one concern about the last voltage check at 11:45 when you are front-probing the EBCM connector. The "high" voltage was only 7.4V instead of the 9.4V at the other two locations. Also, the square wave is not as clean, and seems to decay on the high portions. The only explanation I can think of for this is that either your voltmeter ground is crusty, or there is an almost completely broken wire between C101 and the EBCM. The resistance is so high, that the10 MOhm voltmeter is actually pulling it partially to ground? Maybe try relocating the meter ground, and then the patented "Keith tug test" on the EBCM harness and see if the signal drops out completely? What are your thoughts?

But then again scan data was showing signal "A" stuck "high", and there is no way that could happen with a broken wire, since this looks like a pull-up design. New EBCM module it is! :)

How would a regular guy know to go to a 2007 instead of a 2006? Is that just experience? This is the first time I've seen a steering wheel angle video or even heard of one. Man I got a lot to learn and I'm 60, time's running out! (Ha ha) Great video Keith. it was well explained.

Great video and nice explaining at the wiring diagram, I had a BMW 5 series 2003 model and ABS module seems to have high rate of failure, traction control lamp come on sometimes both ABS and Traction control lamp both lit. looking forward for more videos when time give you a chance to make a video.

Wow,go figure,who ever it was that was throwing the wrong parts at it needs to be schooled. Not sure how you would check the ABS control module but honestly,you know it cant be the steering wheel position sensor,so obviously thats the next link in the chain. Another mechanic theowing the wrong parts at the problem rather than doing what you did. Thankyou for the lesson. I have an 03 Trailblazer with 200k and have to admit,other than a transmission rebuild recently,it has treated me very well. Other than the usual maintenance stuff and a pesky fan clutch issue( which I have decided to just ignore) She runs great.

I have the same issue man on my 07 Trailblazer, I changed my steering angle sensor two times and traction control light and abs light comes on still, also when turn the steering wheel and light will come on, am hoping it's the abs control module 👍🏼, thanks for sharing your video

Ha! Then this morning I get a trailblazer with a c0455. I did find a bulletin that states to id the truck as an 07. Also in the bulletin it mentions to reflash the ebcm, then the SAS data will be available.

that was great Keith. with the module being faulty would that cause the 2mph read outs that i noticed on the wheel sensors or is that not related? just seemed odd that the car was stationary and it was reading 2mph. looking forward to the next one.

I thought Paul Danner is the only one who uses T-Pins? I just had an 2006 Trailblazer with a CO455, does that sensor also give off an analog signal that corresponds with the two digital signals? Thanks Keith for taking the extra time to teach us all!!!

I had the same concern as Ivan, but then I drew the same conclusion he did. Thanks for this awesome video Keith. Is that scan tool a GM specific one? Blue Driver definitely doesn't has those PIDs!!

Thanks for the experience man.Just one question : If the turn signal was not present at Brakes module connector BUT present at midway connector this would mean the wire from the midway connector to brakes connector is short to ground and mechanic need to use test lamp at midway connector to check for short with connector disconnected.

Great video Keith though, can you explain to me the following. In the wiring diagram how is the voltage reg. output connected directly to ground, also the transistors (phase A & B sensors) seems to be flipped over, the emitter should be connected to the EBCM not the collector. Is the diagram wrong or I'm missing something? Thanks for your wonderful channel.

You are right. The transistors, which are presumably phototransistors arranged in quadrature fashion on a rotary encoder, are indeed drawn flipped over. Very annoying, because at a glance it suggests that these transistors are performing ground-side switching.

not to ask you a bunch of questions but what would you recommend? I was also looking at the autel ms906bt.

David Christine I own one of those myself, it is nowhere near as fast as my launch, but it is a very capable tool. However I do like being able to remote into someone else's Launch tablet to assist them on a vehicle when they are stuck. Autel has tried to make their version of this work and they've failed miserably. Again though they are both great tools. I need speed and accuracy not just accuracy. And Autel just doesn't suit my needs, but it may fit yours perfectly

great vid keith, I like that test light test...so if that pulled to ground then it would be a broken wire/wiring problem? is that right

billmck12345 actually if it pulled to low using the test light that would mean the new sensor had failed or that there was a pin fitment problem at the sensor itself

ok I see now.. signal gets manually pulled down and ebtc reports through the scanner... which would leave the circuit in an open state but part of the circuit is showing a bias voltage of 5 volts...so would I start looking on the other side of that sensor circuit for pin issue/or sensor.... sorry to get drawn out on this, just tryin to learn here keith...

billmck12345 not sure of what I am missing in the question. The sensor is providing the bias and the signal. If I manipulate the signal out and the ebtcm status does not change then I test from C101 to break the system in half

sorry my question was about direction, when you were attempting to pull down "a" with the test light...it didn't pull down...it was just a question on what if it did....thanks for explaning...

Hey Keith, great video! Question? Isn't there also an analog signal plus the two digital signals? I had good signals at the ebcm but looking at the wiring diagram there is another signal on pin 3 lt/ bl. Thanks for all your hard work Keith!!!

That's correct . And if you see another of these videos like this one that I made I make mention as well.

Great video I take it the high and low on scan tool was not there as it reads that from the brake module.
