Tragedy Of Uncle - RDR's Most Overlooked Character

Ойындар

Uncle is lazy and sick with lumbago but he does prove VERY useful to the gang and John Marston when the time arises. This means Uncle in Red Dead Redemption is one of the most overlooked characters in the series.

Uncle was one of the few characters who wasn't afraid to call out Dutch for who he was, it's in one of the campfire interactions early on in the game where Uncle calls Dutch a wannabe king amongst the gang. Just bc he’s old and lived his life doesn’t mean he needs to leech off everyone else especially when he isn’t wanted, but nobody has the heart to actually push him away. Think about it, the gang where everyone gets what they earn and Uncle is sitting by the camp fire all day eating or drinking supplies that others donated or food that Pearson makes, etc. and he puts noticeably less effort than most yet he gets all the same benefits. It’s not fair but bc people like Uncle like he’s family they’re willing to tolerate that and fans often overlook that. Then in the epilogue he basically tells John “Nice place u got here now ur stuck with me”

it took me a few playthrough's to realize what Uncle truly brought the group (other than him being a good scout, could uncover certain jobs, decent shooter as we see later), but he was like one of the main sources of entertainment and story telling. When I say "entertainment" I mean he's seemingly an encyclopedia of old songs and tunes and can just sing them from memory perfectly on the spot. I imagine he knew hundreds of those tunes and stories from his travels, and in that day and age that could be a really invaluable thing for the moral of any group

The older I get the more I understand and identity with Uncle. And I always interpreted the “one shot kid” as a sex thing. Like he could knock up any woman with one shot. Thinking more on it, he was probably a great duelist too. Not showing off his abilities, but when pushed, he’d push back. He’s one of the best characters in RDR. Even though it “isn’t canon”. I like to think Uncle was one of the most legendary gunslingers of the west, Red Harlow. But lumbago took a toll on him and made him old and weak, but he’s still extremely loyal to the ones he loves. Always thought it was cooler that he was a legendary gunfighter that, although old and lazy now, we never know the true power of because we can’t really do anything. But regardless Uncle always has a special place in our hearts, our favorite, drunk, old bastard who we all love. ❤️

There's just no way Red Harlow became anyone like Uncle Uncle looks nothing like him, acts nothing like him and has the exact opposite principles that Red Harlow had. Pretty much everyone who wants the theory to be true only want to it to be true cause its cool to think that Uncle was once a badass gunslinger and Red Harlow is the closest excuse they have for it. And don't get me wrong I think the idea of Uncle once being someone who was badass is interesting, but not Red Harlow. It'd be the biggest character assassinations ever if Red Harlow turned into Uncle, not to mention the theory has paper thin proof and is easily disproved

@demonslayer5122 the whole timeline doesn't match up When Red Harlow is in his early 20s in Red Dead Revolver, its roughly in the early 1800s Red Harlow was 12-13 when his parents died meaning Red Dead revolver takes place only around 8-9 years after his parents murder. Knowing this we can determine Reds parents were killed around early to mid 1870s. With this we can determine given Reds age he was born around the early 1860s to very late 1850s. Uncle basically says he was born in 1849, meaning Uncle was around 9-10 when Red was born. It means Uncle was around his early 20s when Reds parents were killed It means when Red is In his early 20s Uncle is either nearing or in his early 30s. And by the time of rdr2 Red would only be in his early to mid 40s when Uncle is in his 50s. The timelines doesn't match up, they look nothing alike, sound nothing alike, act nothing alike, have completely different mindsets and the "evidence" is either paper thin or complete reaching.

Even John gets belittled for his age in the epilogue, with people thinking he won't be much of a help with physical labor due to his age, even though he doesn't even seem that old. These were very harsh times and people were at horrible health. As a gang member, when you get too old for that kind of demanding work, you're at the mercy of your fellow gang members, who don't want to feed you forever if you don't pull your weight. That's not an enviable position. That's something that could have easily happened to John, Arthur or any other gang member, if they turned that old.

At that moment the gang was unable to help anyone, at that moment they needed to help themselves, otherwise they would die, so Dutch wasn't so wrong in using the Indians, as survival was what mattered most at that moment. Also, in chapter 6, Dutch's plan was finally working, they had pulled off their last heist and were fleeing to New York to get on a boat and go to Tahiti, but everything went wrong when Arthur discovered that Micah was the traitor. I know that some of Dutch's actions are completely wrong, like when he lets Arthur and John die, but even so, Dutch acted much more intelligently in chapter 6 than in the rest of the game (apart from him trusting Micah).

I agree this was the only way they could survive but the problem was Dutch placed himself as martyr for all those they could fight for. So to blatantly place his own survival and the gang's over those they supposedly serve or work for. Proves who Dutch really was

but then again, The Dutch Gang was built on pillar based on altruistic idea like helping the poor, shooting people who need shooting and so on. In Chapter 6, the gang completely on the edge of destruction, they can't do such things like helping the poor, but when the gang refuse to help the gang member itself, it's just drifted from the pillar which it relies on.

I always respected Uncle-in both games-for his loyalty, he knew who his family was and was always willing to do something, and protect them in his own way. He led a very interesting life. I look forward to your video on Dutch and his relationship with the natives.

As someone who jumped into RD2 kinda blind, I like the Uncle/Red Harlow theory but i understand that its not possible. HOW I view it, Red dead Revolver is you playing the legend. When in reality Uncle is like Jim Boy Calloway. A legend who will never live up to the stories. Also, if Uncle was a legendary gungslinger, the last thing he would want is either being killed so that someone else can take his title. or family members of his victims coming after him. Also, I just really like Uncle. Yeah, he runs away from camp like Pearson but it makes sense. The man lived a long life where men usually died young. He saw through Mica's b.S and left early. I chose to believe uncle left because he knew shit was going to go down and that hed be a burden to escort out of the gang wars

Uncle being in both games without letting us know much about his past, I only see two valid stories for RDR3, Uncle's past till he joined the gang or Jack's future, which would allow Charles, Sadie or Tillie or anyone else who survuved to be back in the series..

my theory with uncle is that hes a distant relative of either hosea or dutch (though i imagine more likely to be hosea), close enough to be familar but distant enough to not be close. as mentioned in the video hes sort of always been down and out so its possible they crossed paths, recognized each other, and as uncle does he used that familiarity to talk his way into joining up with the gang (i can imagine him saying something about providing "valuable advice and information"). it would explain both why hes allowed to stick around providing very little without ever being expected to really pull his weight and his nickname, as uncle could be a general term of endearment because of his relationship to hosea

It took me until my second time playing RDR2 to realize the karma behind Uncle getting his back roasted on a fire for lying about his lumbago. Uncle; a drunk, a sloth, thief, murderer, and yes…as Arthur said; a compulsive liar. Yet a loved one, and a loyal fighter who cared about the people who let him live his broken life. Shine on you crazy old fool.

What I like about the RDR2 missions is that they all fit the characters you commit them with a lot. But often overlooked are the way Uncle does his missions. Even though he often lazies about and wastes his times in Saloons, he often does get valuable information (probably from Saloon gossip) with high-paying jobs that are relatively safe and easy. Which really fits his character, unwilling to work hard and risk his neck for a low pay. John was right that Uncle was useful in his useless kinda way.

Big fan of the RDR2 videos. One suggestion of a topic/ something I have put some thought into is: who Jack's is real father? This is a controversial topic, but I believe that Dutch is the true biological father of Jack Marston. I recognize that Rockstar has left it vague enough to not have a true definitive answer available to the public but here are my reasons for thinking this is the case. 1. Jack simply looks very similar to Dutch van Der Linde in the appearance of his face, specifically, as an adult. I think he looks more like Dutch than any of the other gang members, including John Marston. The shape of his eyes and brow, the size of his nose, and the facial hair he chooses to grow are all very reminiscent of Dutch. 2. Jack has always had an interest and capability in reading books. John Marston has little interest in books and Abigail can hardly read; while Dutch is completely fascinated with books and the ideas his literary interest has to teach him. 3. Dutch specifically mentions to John how he, along with the rest of the gang, had slept with Abigail before she got pregnant with Jack. I'm currently unsure if Javier makes the same point in any dialogue within RDR1, I don't think he does. I feel that it is significant that Rockstar only gives Dutch this line to say throughout the series. 4. I wonder if part of Dutch's animosity/ indifference to John's well-being is that: though John filled in a good "stepfather" position for Jack and took the pressure and responsibility of being a father off of his shoulders, Dutch ultimately wanted to raise this child (who he knew really was his) as his own. Dutch accepts John going to prison without trying to save him and hopes/ gladly assumes John dies during the train robbery. Maybe it was Micah whispering in his ear that John was a rat, or maybe Dutch already had a desire to get rid of John and was happy to listen to the theory of him being a traitor.

I did the math and red dead revolver takes place in 1880. Red Harlow was born in 1851. That makes him 29 in the game. Skip 19 years, 1880-1899. Red dead 2 he'd be 48. Uncle could possibly be Red Harlow in sheep's clothing. Over the almost 20 years he's gotten older. Just saying if he's telling the main character he used to be called the one shot kid. Not to mention the tale at the camp in RDR1 with the stranger who talks of a stick up at a mansion involving Red Harlow and Jack Swift. Although Jack didn't make it. Red Harlow probably did. Btw at the end of Red dead revolver, Red Harlow leaves town after his redemption of his parents.
