Traffic Signal Battery Back Up Testing

Ғылым және технология

OK boys & girls, gather around. Today, I'm demonstrating how to test a traffic signal battery back up system (from our inventory). There are other lead acid battery back up systems out there, but the unit I'm testing in this tutorial is an Alpha system. Hope you learn something.
You can get tools like the ones I'm using in the video here:

However, your battery replacement program uncovered additional problems which are hopefully being addressed. In a Preventative Maintenance program, I would call that a win.

You are exactly right. We have these BBU (especially the batteries) on an inspection schedule now. I have found with the lead acid batteries, about the 4 yr time frame is when they need fully load tested and probably replaced. Although if they have a little juice left in them, sometimes we ride it a little longer....Thanks for the comment!

Do these units have any kind of built-in diagnostics? I see there's a LAN port & seems it would be useful to be able to run a remote test before going onsite. Love your videos BTW! Congrats on 1k subs!

You hit it on the head! When programmed with an IP address and an ethernet cord inserted into the LAN port to a switch, you can do just that. And YES, very helpful when you have a 3 hr drive to a signal and you want to check it remotely before taking that haul. Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated!

Never knew traffic lights had a battery backup system

Yep! Not all do but at least the signals I cover, all major intersections have them and all new installs get them as well. Thanks for commenting!

I noticed there is only a single 120 volt circuit output on the unit does this unit provide power to be entire intersection or does it only provide enough power to put it into flash and if it does could you make a video on explaining on how it works with the rest of the cabinet

Yes, the Output provides overall intersection power. In the video, I just hooked up a spare LED that was laying around just to verify the operation of the BBU. Back in the day (when incadescent bulbs was mainstream), when there was a loss of power, we would have to make the BBU switch to flash mode to provide power. Because it was such a large load on the BBU, we would also have to split the flashing output evenly among the LED's in the field. This is why you see the ping ponging flash effect so often at intersections. Instead of being 100% flash on, then 100% flash off...you have the load 50/50 split. That way you can provide power without overloading the output. But with LED's, there's no worry now. Power consumption by an intersection is dropped by approx. 75% with LED's. Thanks for commenting!

@@streetsmartstraffic interesting So the entire intersection is able to be powered by a single 120 volt 15 or 20 am circuit? Also one more question what would happen to the intersection when the unit runs low on power do the intersection shut off and how long does the battery last on a average intersection during a power outage

@@mrblocksly2020 Yes to your 1st question. Most BBU's have a programmable interface where you have the option of how it will handle the intersection when the batteries are draining too low. Many like to have it kick the signal into flash mode when it reaches a certain threshhold--for example, when there's only 10% juice left in the batteries. On average, I say 3-4 hrs on a standard intersection (with LED indications)

How long a run time does an intersection typically have on backup

All depends on the load size of the intersection and the size of the BBU Unit. A small T intersection with a handful of LED's signal heads would run much longer than a full blown 4 direction major hightway intersection, with ped siganls, blank out signs, etc. Just think...Lets say 6 (3 sections heads) which equals 18 total indications for the T intersection. Compared that to the big intersection that may potentially have 100+ total indications. You're run time is going to be significatly longer with the T intersection. But on a standard intersection....3-4 hours? This is on a fully charged system. Thanks for the question!

No-haven't seen them. I previously had a handful of the older models and wasn't a fan of them. One initiative I did when taking over was to streamline our product line. Makes it much easier when a piece of equipment goes bad. While we have a handful of MultiLink BBU's out there, we're primarily Alpha. Thanks for the comment!

Most likely. There's a multitude of models out there that are used for more than just traffic signals.
