[Traffic Camera] Seattle Drivers vs the Snow - Round 2!

Filmed 2/10/19 and 2/11/19. *Full title so people don't get mad: Seattle Drivers vs the snow, ice, steep hills and not enough plows.*
Seattle was hit with a total of 4 "Snow Events" over the past two weeks; in this video, I recorded people trying to drive during the last two. Lots of issues on the West Seattle Bridge, but downtown was no cakewalk either. As for the 45th St Viaduct ... why would you even attempt it in the snow?
Thanks for watching!

Lived in Seattle around 1986, when we had a huge snowstorm all day. I was rebuilding fireplaces back than, so I literally had a ton of bricks in my Dodge Polara station wagon, when I started my way back home from North Seattle to mid U-district. I planned my route really carefully, no hills etc, not easy in Seattle, and it took me three hours to get home, versus 15 minutes to get to my job, and I met 3 cars on the way. Never ever had three hours of cold sweat like that.

I have to say, compared to all the KZread videos I've seen of winter driving, these people are actually doing pretty well. Don't get me wrong; ALL of them should have stayed home. Even so, you don't see any of these people coming down the hill at full speed and expecting to be able to stop at the traffic light. Except for the fact that they're on the road at all (and that one jackass going the wrong way on a divided highway), they're all being very cautious. I've seen lots of videos of winter drivers in places where snowy roads are the norm for four months of the year who go the full speed limit or are outright speeding and smash into other cars or they hit a curve and they spin right off the road because they're not taking the weather conditions into account at all.

  • @SeattleTrafficCams

Our climate is also just temperate enough that it likes to use the freezing point as a damn trampoline, leading to this nasty type of gray compacted sludge…which is always, ALWAYS layered over ice. That’s the real danger in Seattle: the ice. If there’s snow, there’s guaranteed to be ice, and it likes to freeze crystal clear so you’ll never see it in time to avoid it.

When the roads are that greasy, icy or snowy, we people of the East Coast of Canada and Maine, know to stay off of them. We may be crazy, tell you to hold our Tims and watch, but there are times where we are smart enough to get off of the roads and stay safe at home. Kudos to those city workers (plows, police, fire, etc.) that were out in that mess helping the idiots off the road. lol God bless them one and all. The amount of snow on the road is just enough for playtime here. Expecting 6 to 8 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow with high winds. Should go out playing after it's over.. NOT!!! Seattle, given the rarity of snowy conditions that last this long, you re forgiven. However, in the rest of the country where winter means snow and ice every year, it is unbelievable that thousands of drivers refuse to prepare, and thus these scenes occur with regularity. Until the M & S rating is removed from 3 season tires, winter traffic camera entertainment will continue.

Seattle has to be one of the worst places for stuff like this to happen. It's full of hills and usually only gets a few inches of snow per year. So yeah, no one knows how to drive in the snow and they aren't equipped with the proper tires. I was waiting at a bus stop next to an intersection on a hill in Port Angeles during this weather and watched cars stopped by the light going uphill slide to the shoulder. The road didn't go straight up the hill at that point otherwise they would've slid right back down.

Seatt Traff Cams Thank you for Video . Full title was fine for me and I liked that you labeled Music . Nice choice and volume . Those poor Busses Jack Knifed . Question do they use the term Jill Knifed if they are a Female bus ? I hope things have not gone too Crazy with bus terms there yet . I have only been to Seattle once and was not there long enough to see what it was like . I live on a Hill in an area that has Dry snow , Medium Snow and Wet Snow . Sometimes we get a lot at one time for Multiple days . Our Garbage trucks have plows on them when a storm comes . We use a lot of salt when temps are right for it . Like you pointed out in your nice video you have to make changes for the conditions . Please keep making these videos

5:12 how can you get 14 vehicles stuck at the same location? Around here the steepest incline is up to the university. Once the first bus has trouble getting up there, they skip 3 stops and take an alternative much longer route uphill, without any steep incline.

It was about 2 hours in that I started wishing I'd taken the bike. *IT* had studded tires, it might have been uncomfortable, but I would have been home by then.

True. We are the worst. But, what people don’t know is we live at the freezing temperature in times snow falls. It melts in the day and freezes at night. They ARE NOT driving in snow! They are driving on sheets of ice. Not snow. We can deal with that. Our terror of snow comes from never seeing’s a snowplow at work.

@Vladimir_Bone Spur_tRump Not at all. It helps, but it's almost not necessary. A lot of the roads in Sweden are untreated. And even more roads are treated first after several hours or days, and even then it's okay with snow and ice on the roads. I have driven on highways with 10 cm of snow on, with FWD. Without ANY problem. Yesterday it was rain and above 0 degree C and during the evening it went down below 0 and started snowing and was blowing a Lot so it was sometimes hard to see even where the road were, and i still had NO problem getting home (smaller roads and larger one like highways). I have at least! 200.000 km behind the wheel in all kind of weathers and has Never had any problems. Yes, it takes a bit longer to get to the destination when it's snowing and blowing like crazy and you don't see where the road are but it still works. Never stuck. Never slid off. Nothing. But, i always use the best rated tires (summer tires during summer and winter tires during winter) and i always make sure i switch to winter tires before it gets slippery (there are weather forecasts you know...).

I've seen plenty of trucks with mudders spin too. Reason is huge mud tires are not good for snow on roads. The idea is for the tire to dig into the snow and hit ground. Mudders float on top of the snow and spin. Good for mud and sand, bad for snowy roads.

@Vladimir_Bone Spur_tRump that happened to my atv tires, clogged with mud and got so stuck it took 2 excavators to get it out. First one got stuck as well lol. Snow tires usually have pretty aggressive looking tread, I believe they are designed to cut through the snow and not get clogged up with any. I drive a truck and with nice snow tires and 4x4 I've never slipped, nevermind get stuck. Live in the North.

@Vladimir_Bone Spur_tRump The look isn't everything. The most important bit is the rubber compound. And, of course, the design of the tire, especially when it comes to studless.

Look, in our defense: we never seem to get nice, normal snow. We get this compacted gray sludge that has about the same color and consistency as wet cement. Oh, and it’s always layered over ice. ALWAYS. The real issue isn’t even the snow, it’s the damn ice! Because there’s always ice, especially when it snows, and it likes to freeze crystal clear so you’ll never see it in time to avoid it.
