Traeth Dulas Shipwreck Photography, Anglesey

Traeth Dulas is an interesting location for landscape photography. Even though it is an extremely wide and long estuary fed by a small river caled Afon Goch, and you would be forgiven for thinking that there isn't really much landscape photography potential, there are some old shipwrecks which have become quite a local landmark and make very interesting subjects for a photography composition. The estuary is situated on the north-east coast of Anglesey, between Amlwch and Benllech and close to Lligwy beach.
I think it's quite fair to include it as one of my off the beaten track locations, because it is quite difficult to locate and even in the height of the holiday season you will often have the place entirely to yourself. Access is down a singletrack lane and parking is quite limited, but since the location is quite secluded that isn't usually too much of an issue.

    @@DGriffGallery I wonder if they were unmoored from another location and drifted there. There was a location along a rocky California coast where boats would appear. Certain tides would carry them to a cove from hundreds of miles away.... who knows!?!

    It's a fabulous location and those boats make such interesting subjects, thanks so much for sharing this Dave :) I visited yesterday, as you say the estuary empties so fast, It's tricky to time it right with the tide. I was probably a little too late for the best compositions. One thing to mention is that the most important accessory to bring is your wellies! It could have been a result of the spring tide (equinox today), but the path was extremely wet, muddy and slippy in places. In fact, at the slipway where the coast path turns, I decided to step off the end, thinking it looked safer, only to sink up to my knee in soft mud! That made me think twice about trying to wade out to the more preserved boat. I thought I might never be seen again! I met some fellas out walking, one was a local called Jason who runs a print business near Cemaes. He knew a lot about the history of the boats. Jason showed us his fabulous picture from 10 years back when the closer boat was in excellent condition and pointed 180-degrees in the other direction. He said that a storm had transformed an otherwise healthy boat in for repair into the wreck we see now. I have two more days on Anglesey, any tips for shooting on dull cloudy days? ;) Thanks again and keep the fabulous vlogs coming Dave!

    Hi Pete, many thanks for the feedback - I did mention the muddy conditions in the audio which failed and then forget to mention it again in the voice over1 As far as grey day locations I'd say Traeth Ynys y Fydlyn is a great spot in any conditions, unless you've never visited Llanddwyn? And if you're able to coincide a shoot with one of the very high spring tides we're having at the moment then the Church In The Sea would be my first choice!

    Liked the video, and the stills. I did notice a blue cast on at least one of the images, which suggests that you might have been using the Lee Big Stopper? Of course, it could be my TV, but most of the pics looked fine. Lee do an IRND version of the big stopper that's supposed to address the blue cast, and so do Hitech, manufacturing them in south Wales.

Although I have just replaced it with a Cokin Nuances 10-Stop So that I can use it in my filter holder. @@DGriffGallery Hi David, images at 4.01 and 7.04 (and a couple of others) presented quite a strong blue/cyan cast on my gear, at odds with the video colours. You might have wanted that for artistic effect, but I had wondered if you used the 'cheaper' Lee ten stop which will create a blue cast that is not always satisfactorily adjusted in post. However there are no dislikes for this video, so maybe it's just me. Incidentally, do you still think your copy of the 12-100 is sharpest at f7.1? It's a great lens. Though not an expert I cannot think of a full frame lens that has a zoom range of 24-200 and is just as sharp, but I'm sure somebody can correct me😉.

    Hi David, good to see your take on photographing these old boats. I was there about a month ago and was also unable to get across to larger, more intact of the two due to the depth of that channel! I want a photograph with the larger wreck with water still covering the sand, but this could be tricky with the depth of that channel etc. My two options seem to be 1) use my waders to cross that channel, however, that could lead to there being three old wrecks stuck in the mud! 2) use a zoom lens with wide aperture to isolate the boat from a distance. Do you think this second option would work? Regards, Kevin

  • @DGriffGallery

    @DGriffGallery

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Kevin, yeah way too risky at anything other than a very low tide as you can't test the ground easily and I've heard of people even in chest waders getting into all sorts of bother. I'd say that anything over 300mm as wide open as possible would do the trick from either side of the estuary at right angles to it's position 😀👍

    Hi Ian, yes I have use that technique in the past, specifically quite recently in video I did with some coastal photography.
