The amazing story of a father and son. The handing down of a legacy so great that it will change the world forever!
The real life story of a true Grandmaster, William Cheung, ie., Cheung Cheuk-hing. The master of masters, the ultimate fighter handing down his life knowledge to his son and disciple, Andrew Cheung.
This is the story of the sacred art of Wing Chun!
Wing Chun Kuen, usually called Wing Chun, is a concept-based traditional Southern Chinese Kung fu style and a form of self-defense, that requires quick arm movements and strong legs to defeat opponents. Softness and performance of techniques in a relaxed manner is fundamental to Wing Chun.
William Cheung or Cheung Cheuk-hing (張卓慶, pinyin: Zhāng Zhuóqìng), born October, 1940, is a Hong Kong Wing Chun kung fu practitioner and currently the Grandmaster of his lineage of Wing Chun, entitled Traditional Wing Chun (TWC). He also heads the sanctioning body of TWC, the Global Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu Association (GTWCKFA). Cheung is responsible for introducing Bruce Lee to his master Ip Man when they were teenagers in Hong Kong.

I have trained together with MMA champs and police and army special forces. When I see garbage, I can recognise it and what I see in you is an idiot who is searching all William Cheung's videos and writing shit about him and the system. Why? As I said: stop writing about things you don't know, nor understand kid and go back to your keyboard training and leave martial arts to martial artists. Mahalo for this video! Gung Fu is also a term not only used in martial arts but used as a terms of doing something very well, ie, there are cooking Gung Fu masters and we'll say their cooking is good Gung Fu! So Willy Wu in the video has double good Gung Fu!!! The explanations are very good here. There are so many videos where comments are made about how Wing Chun doesn't work and that tells me that people don't understand the concepts, elbow control, the blind side, where power, force and energy comes from and how it's applied. I think they look at WC as sport and don't realize it's much more lethal and poignant concepts especially when other disciplines are added into one's "toolbox" like boxing, kicking and grappling. So much is used by special forces and seen in Filipino close quarter combat. Also, I think in terms of fighting, there's no such thing as fighting per se unless it's for sport, ie boxing, tournaments...... A good "fight" is over in a few seconds. I believe Sifu William and his generation understood that and things weren't long and drawn out like we see in movies. When you ask specially trained people how are they trained to fight, many will say, that they don't fight and the layman doesn't understand that. The best "fight" is to use your legs and run or like Sijo Bruce said in Enter the Dragon, "the art of fighting without fighting" and Andy Cheung reiterated that near the end of the video.

I think in order to be really prepared for an altercation, you need to know boxing, and probably bjj or wrestling. Learning self defense systems are too focused on specific scenarios. It’s better to learn how to deal with raw aggression, and I feel like most combat sports have mastered that. If adding eye gauging or ball strikes is the determining factor, I think a trained athlete/fighter can probably do it more efficiently. That’s just my opinion. I’ve competed at a high ammy level in Muay Thai, K1, and mma. I also have a background in traditional martial arts, so I have a good understanding of the bullshit people try and teach.

In the 90’s, I remember William Cheung came to NY for a seminar because I was studying Wing Chun within ‘his traditional system’ under one of his top students. It started out as a nice seminar. Even Sifu Sonny Whittmore was attending and he was assisting. Well two things happened on that day which caused me to leave his supposed system. First, he was demonstrating a technique with Sonny. I don’t remember exactly which one but suddenly William nearly went over because Sonny did ‘something’ out of character with the pre-planned movements. Everyone immediately gasped as Sonny quickly stopped William from falling over. After saving him, there were some quick courtesy bows exchanged between the two and Sonny apologized. I always felt he did it purposely as a test. At the least… it created a doubt. But we moved on. Second- He was showing us how to defend against a sweep kick from behind where the attacker’s foot is basically hitting at the back of your foot’s heel. His solution was to quickly shift the foot. Well, my intuition light bulb went off, because as I imagined it happening in real time… as in… a FAST attack. I couldn’t get past the idea that you would be able to shift your foot quickly enough. By that time… you’d be on the floor is the way I envisioned it. Because it’s one thing in slow motion for a class demo but quite another in real life. So I politely asked him: “Sigung… how do you defend if it’s happening quickly?” (or something like that.) I don’t remember his answer, but it was basically: “It works… don’t worry about it.” A few minutes later while practicing the first form, he looked in my direction and said: “Everyone, remember… if you ask questions about this system… you don’t belong.” He OBVIOUSLY meant that for me. It was a little embarrassing. But it also pissed me off. I’m sorry… but this is America and I’m PAYING YOU $350. Needless to say… I now laugh at his phony system. Remember, this was back in the 90’s with no internet. My local teacher would tell us stories like: “William Cheung learned ‘special moves’ from Yip Man. They were only taught to HIM”. Apparently, when William lived with The Master, he was stirred from sleep and told things like: “Tan Sao… not like this… but THIS.” This was only for those DESERVING of the REAL WING CHUNG. This was the TRADITIONAL system. LMAO. It always smelled funny to me and I knew it was a PR stunt. To this day, it still goes on as to which Wing Chung is the real one. Doesn’t matter because it’s useless. Check on KZread “Wing Chun vs. MMA”. USELESS.

it isn't useless, I was in quite a few other martial arts and had a close friend I would spar with for years before joining this lineage of wing chun, and after 6 mo, and then going back to spar with my friend, I was the one setting the pace, controlling the fight, getting the most hits in. however, when I looked into his past... yeah he's lying, when Yip Man changed things, he let the whole school know, and did.. even WSL would acknowledge that. And speaking of traditional vs modified compare Leung Sheung to Wong Shun Leung's lineages and they're quite different, and both are quite different from the ip chung, LT and other lineages... everything is different and everything evolves, that's how things should be... no one got it perfect the first time and no one perfectly teaches what they learned. The most humble teacher I know of, tells his students to go out and look at other martial arts, when they come back tell him 3 things they really liked about the art that his didn't have... he also insists that when people open up their own school, don't name it after him or what he taught, name it something else, teach it how they envision it could be better.

  • @jeffyoung60
    @jeffyoung6010 ай бұрын

i just realized the obvious by listening to this video. The late Bruce Lee's core martial art was Wing Chun. Later in life, he felt Wing Chun lacked mobility and hence would integrate foot movements from Western boxing into his Jeet Kune Do. But this was mostly because Bruce Lee was thinking about martial arts competition and sparring. Wing Chun found its creation from a Buddhist nun, who constructed the martial art as an immediate means of self-defense for women and weaker persons. Yes, a lot of men are not born body builders and are of slight build. I put two and two together by thinking about Defendu, a strictly aggressive self defense combative formed around Jujutsu, boxing, wrestling, and Savate by William Fairbairn. Neither Wing Chun nor Defendu incorporated mobile footwork for the simple reason that personal self-defense was all about reacting to getting attacked. You didn't have time to spar nor get into boxing-type footwork. You were standing there and someone tried to cold-cock or blindside or sucker punch you. Your hands and arms were your immediate defense and you needed to end the attack within mere seconds. Your feet weren't going anywhere in those three seconds of assault and defense. Had Wing Chun not been effective in its traditional form shown in the video, it would have never survived to the 20th century. Had Defendu not been successful on the streets of dangerous Shanghai in the early 20th century, it too would have quickly vanished instead of become the core study of today's modern military hand-to-hand combatives for many nations. When you're contemplating immediate self-defense to sudden physical attack within one or two seconds, you're going to react with your hands and arms. You might be able to add in a low kick or knee but you won't be doing any sparring movements. That's for the competition ring.

I've been into martial arts since a child and I always wanted to know who created wing Chun and where the ideas of the form come from. It's one thing to be taught a form but it's different when you understand the concept of the teaching. So many assume a form is useless( ie aikido) because of the misunderstanding of the concept of the form. Who created Wing Chun and how did the form come to be?

He left America to Australia to seek a different life. I watch my Grand Father practice Tai Chi and I saw him do things a normal person could not. He had super fast reflex and one day he fashion a small net and caught 5 birds flying in the air. At the end of the day he was cooking these sparrows wrapped in foil. I am now 72 and because of my Grandfather, I have been practicing almost all my life. My current art is Wing Chun. I put in 1.5 hours daily with standing Qigong in the horse with arms straight out. The longest i did was for 5 hours. I can feel and send Chi to people. So for me 40 mins Qigong is good enough to build strength. My Grandfather last name was Lee

As someone who once practiced William Cheung style Wing Chun, there’s several things here that are said that I just don’t really understand. “Wing Chun is the only system made by a woman.” Other systems have this same kind of origin story, such as White Crane. “No other martial art controls the elbow” plenty of southern styles use trapping, and many of them use joint locks and go for the elbow. Just, plenty in general, period. Really when I was taught, I was taught that Wing Chun has pretty much nothing unique, it’s just drilling the basics and fundamentals to an extreme which when you practice styles outside of Wing Chun you see similar things being done. But yeah, any system with trapping or grappling I’m sure controls the elbow… “Every other style squares off and faces each other to fight. They do not use the blind side.” Many styles take a bladed stance, and keep some distance. Many styles pivot off the line of attack. Many styles use small angle adjustments to make an incoming strike miss and give you an opportunity to land one. Hip rotation for power is in itself a pivot that changes the line you’re on potentially. A good boxer is adept at positioning. They are going to move around. @notusingmyname4791 possibly because as I'm getting older I can't rely on muscle and structure alone. As years went by I started to use more and more "internal" then "external ". Also it's good for my health. I'm pretty good with techniques, I learned other styles including boxing, kickboxing. I don't need more techniques 😀. I know what works for me. CST method gives me another perspective and I simply enjoy it. Recently I go to a Bujinkan dojo (yes its Japanese) and its fun to see when youngsters can't even move me if I don't let them... hehe. Try it and if you find it enjoyable then it's a win for you. But I think it's not for everyone.

Yeah Emin did kick his ass, but I wouldn’t be proud if I’d done it in a similar style. I’m no fan of Bill’s, but the way Boztepe jumped him was a shit go. Not to mention that Cheung was 77 years old at the time and it’s basically the only thing he’s really known for, whereas Cheung is known as the legend that was a closed door student of Tony Jaa and was the only person that ever learned traditional wing chun, despite Tony being 125 years old at the time and simultaneously smoking half a pound of opium before lunchtime every day. Oh and also surprising that no one else ever convinced the old man to even show them the “traditional forms”, though I’m pretty certain he’d have broken every bone in his 178 year old body just trying… It’s also no coincidence that Hong Kong didn’t return to the motherland until long after Willy relocated to Australia, as apparently the politburo of the ccp didn’t want to risk having him as an enemy and possibly training all the other democracy protesters. You only need to look at the way his student chi blasted that tank at Tiananmen Square to realise just how dangerous Cheung, or “50~50 Willy” as his mates call him, can really be..

Lineages have several differences, but the basics and main principles are the same. That's why once you learn one lineage, it's then very easy to learn others. Regarding your second question, it all depends on the practitioner. If we have the very same in everything, meaning guys of same height, same weight, same years of training, same strength and flexibility, same experience in street fights etc, so in a way that the only difference between them is the system they have been practicing, then the Wing Chun guy would probably win, as long as the fight wont go to the floor.

It's all a matter of timing and reflexes and experience and as I said, it depends on the practitioner. I've done bjj for 2 years, intensively, it is very very good, but you need more, eg boxing and probably some legs, eg kick boxing, however, in blocking attacks with hands and attacking sensitive pressure points at the same time, nothing can match Wing Chun, not even pure shaolin, as long of course as you really practise it seriously and by a good instructor and not just do it for fun and claim you are a wing chun practitioner like most clowns do and get beaten all the time by MMA novices. I'm training together with MMA fighters for years, very few can beat me (in the ring), but probably none of them in a real street fight, in a life threatening situation in a dark alley, where it's either his life or mine. Needless to say that you also need to stay fit, go to the gym etc, martial arts alone wont help you in a nasty street fight if you aren't fit enough to survive for more than a couple of minutes.

I studied with him for 5 years from 1991-1996. He's a fraud. In the entire time then he did no sparring with any students or anyone. He did chi sao, but no sparring. Dude has never had a fight. Basically the very image of a fake master.

You must be the stupidest person alive to keep training for 5 years with someone you considered a fraud. So, stop lying, if you really had trained with him for 5 years, first of all you would already be a Sifu yourself, and you'd talk with respect for your own Sifu. Unless of course you are completely worthless. There are people who have trained with him and have become instructors etc and now aren't any more affiliated with him, don't even like eg his financial policies etc, but still talk with respect about him, like for example Sifu Diddier or Johnny Clayton and so many others, so I don't know your purpose here, but what I know is that nothing of what you say has the slightest reliability. And by the way, who has told you that Masters spar with their students? Do you think Wong Shun Leung did? Or Dunkan Leung? Or Moe Yat? You don't know what you're talking about. Also, Masters don't even need to know how to fight, as long as they can teach you. Look at boxing for example, Cus D Amato, was Mike Tyson's trainer and best boxing coach ever. But he wasn't a fighter, he only had one amateur fight in his entire life in his early youth, which he lost. So kid, stop the nonsense and if you wish to see if Cheung's system is fake and fraud or not, go challenge his son Andrew (as GM William is now 80 years old) or someone else, like Keith Mazza or Antony Arnette or Philippe Redmond and so many others, they will be more than happy to show you if it works, as they've done with so many others. Till you do that, you're just an ignorant keyboard warrior and a huge liar too, so go back to the warmhole that you came from and shut up.

@@BRUCEJJ66 Muhammad Ali was one and only, there never was one like him and there never will be. Also, Cheung's goal isn't to prepare fighters for competition but to teach you to defend yourself and he's pretty good at this. However, there are a few successful fighters that were and some still are his students and some have become instructors, either using his name or not, although they don't hide who they learned from, and if you decide to make your research, you'll manage to find out. If you are too lazy to do this, I'm happy to give you some of those names.

This is interesting well made film, though one has to ask why this Grandmaster Cheung was so very easily beaten in a fight in 1986 by a then novice Emin Boztepe if his Traditional Wing Chun is so practical and effective? Cheung after getting beaten never asked for a rematch, and made numerous lame excuses as to why he was so easily beaten. The son saying he would beat Bruce Lee and William himself saying he would LOL = a Wing Chun/Tsun then novice Emin Boztepe easily defeated William Cheung, so saying William could beat Bruce Lee is ABSURD!
